Health classes discuss relevant problems Health and safety classes studied the effects and problems of cigarettes, alcohol, and drugs, in addition to the usual home, water, and car safety rules. Speakers, demonstrations, and outside reading materials supplemented classroom discussions. Mrs. Hildreth, the school nurse, spoke about the importance of pub- lic health and the role of the Porter County Health Department. Mr. Sweet demon- strated the functioning of human organs by bringing the lungs, heart, and liver of a cow to class. Mr. Sweet illustrates the flexibility of hand muscles to his students.

Wondering if he ' ll make it back, Mr. Stokes is found in another student practice car. One hour a week is specified for driving practice. Waiver added to the driver’s education classes “Waiver” was a new term used in the driver’s education classes this year. Students who had successful practice sessions, and a better than average class record received a stamp or waiver on their cards. This means they went directly into the “driver ' s seat without a state road test. “Adjust your seat, check your mirror, fasten your seat belt,” was typical driver ' s education jargon heard in all driver ' s education courses. Mr. Stokes, the instructor, showed films illus- trating how health, sleep, alcohol, and drugs affect driving directly. Rick Roberts shows how to “buckle up for safety.
