Art students use enthusiastic Joe Golando as a live model for their sketches. 16 Art students work with leather and string in their macrame project. Macrame introduced to art classes Macrame, the art of creative knotting, was one of several projects introduced in art classes this year. For the first time, students made geometric string figures and paraffin candles, while some transformed eggs into opp art creations. With the assistance of student teachers throughout the year. Mr. Cain taught art clas- ses the basics of sculpturing and drawing. The student body viewed the results of the art program in the various show cases. Roh Nelson assists a fellow art student in the handling of inking a stencil. 17 BAND — FRONT ROW: K. Steder, M. Wellner, M. Morris, J. Siegal, J. Makovsky, W. Hart, T. Edsall, B. Dunivan, A. Band illustrates versatility The Marching Vikings, directed by Mr. Robert Miller, entertained during halftime at home football games. At the close of foot- ball, the band auditioned for positions in the concert band, which gave performances in the Christmas program and the Spring Concert. They also participated in the state contest and NISBOVA. The proceeds from the annual Ham Dinner held at T.J. were used toward the purchas- ing of badly needed uniforms. The pep band played their spirit-lifting marches during pep sessions and football and basketball games. Mary Dust helps Nicky Hasse gel ready for a half-time performance. 19 Mr. Rohn consults with a beginning typing pupil on proper typing techniques. New class added; lab class revised For the first time a clerical lab for prospec- tive business employees was introduced. The lab gave the non-shorthand student an oppor- tunity to apply all former business training to a business-type situation. Nine girls enrolled in the two-hour secre- tarial lab. Three years of planned scheduling are necessary for this class. The course pre- pared future secretaries in business tech- niques. In other business classes, bookkeeping, business law, clerical records, sales, short- hand, and typing, pupils learned that patience and practice are two rules a business student never forgets. Second year typist, Darlene Bator, concentrates on accuracy to complete her job with no errors. 20 Cathy LePell learns that it requires dictation practice to master first year shorthand. 21 Wondering if he ' ll make it back, Mr. Stokes is found in another student practice car. One hour a week is specified for driving practice. Waiver added to the driver’s education classes “Waiver” was a new term used in the driver’s education classes this year. Students who had successful practice sessions, and a better than average class record received a stamp or waiver on their cards. This means they went directly into the “driver ' s seat without a state road test. “Adjust your seat, check your mirror, fasten your seat belt,” was typical driver ' s education jargon heard in all driver ' s education courses. Mr. Stokes, the instructor, showed films illus- trating how health, sleep, alcohol, and drugs affect driving directly. Rick Roberts shows how to “buckle up for safety. Health classes discuss relevant problems Health and safety classes studied the effects and problems of cigarettes, alcohol, and drugs, in addition to the usual home, water, and car safety rules. Speakers, demonstrations, and outside reading materials supplemented classroom discussions. Mrs. Hildreth, the school nurse, spoke about the importance of pub- lic health and the role of the Porter County Health Department. Mr. Sweet demon- strated the functioning of human organs by bringing the lungs, heart, and liver of a cow to class. Mr. Sweet illustrates the flexibility of hand muscles to his students. Exhaustion catches Lynise Pion after work on her term paper. 26 Organization ties English classes together According to Mrs. Clark, “Organization is what ' s new” in the English department this year. All grades were coordinated so that the specified material would be covered simul- taneously. This was especially effective when ordering film strips, records, and movies. Seniors experienced a revolutionary change in their English courses. Because of the mini” courses, seniors found they could take specific courses of their own interest. Juniors studied term papers and American Literature from Bradford to Sandburg. Soph- omores sampled types of writing from all time periods. Becky Griffin and Kathy Huns burger learn the importance of independent study. Dave Bender and Carol Anderson listen as Miss Shaver gives instructions on bibliography. 27 Rick Miller finds solitude in VHS library. One hundred new books added to library The addition of 100 new books increased the school library, for the 1970-71 school year, to 8,200 volumes. With the help of Mr. Gardin and student librarians, pupils learned how to use and respect library facilities such as the card catalog, magazine stacks, and various ref- erence books. The 14 student librarians forfeited their study halls to work five hours a week in the library. They checked out books, hunted down lost magazines, and assisted students. Walt Suffern and Joyce King use the card catalog to help build their bibliographies for English. 28 Pat Longnecker, Amy Bibler, Rick Arma- lavage, and Margie McGill use library facilities for term paper research. As one of their duties. Don Rowland and Jenniter Lawrence sort cards. STUDENT LIBRARIANS — FRONT ROW: R. Berrier, J. Johnson, D. Delahanty, J. Dettler, J. Meyer, D. Hughes, A. Moreland, W. Gaedtke. BACK ROW: T. Gannon, L. Ellis, M. Pritchard, P. Sachtleben, J. Deal, R. Armalavage, D. Deal. 29 Science studies theories The five science courses, applied science, first and second year chemistry, general phy- sics. and physics, involved interaction of par- ticles and chemical reactions. Slide rules and exploring periodic tables prepared the first year chemistry student for the lab research done in second year chem- istry. Scientific theories were dealt with in general physics and physics classes. Both classes stressed laboratory problems and in- quiries. Applied science pupils studied the main points of both chemistry and physics. Plastic aprons protect Jim Doane ' s and Bob Gray’s clothing from hydrochloric acid. Seniors Pat Mann and Nancy Trapp evaporate a liquid with the use of a Bunsen burner and help from Mr. Hunn. 30 Class activities include writing up observations and conducting experiments. Part of laboratory work is cleaning up the “mess” afterwards, as Brad Dibkey well knows. Math classes modernized with new math hooks Space, trigonometry, and hypothetical situ- ations are encountered in the different phases of math offered at VHS. This year all classes, except honors geometry, obtained new books to up date the courses. Students learned a completely different thought process through proofs in sophomore geometry. Advanced algebra dealt with loga- rithms and other difficult math. Senior math class students diligently put all past mathe- matical training to use learning such things as calculus and analytical geometry. Several VHS math students competed in the annual Math Invitational held in May, which is open to all math pupils in Northern Indiana. Senior John Lowensline demonstrates how to find the point of trisection of a segment. Using the distance formula, senior math student Tom Kruse Steve Moser listens attentively as Mr. Scott explains symmetry, proves a quadrilateral is a rhombus. 32 Students use their powers of concentration in visualizing mathematical equations. 33 New facilities aid phys ical education classes Al Cherry demonstrates spring board form for his phys. ed. class. This year in the girl’s physical education course, instructed hv Mrs. Lynn Dickinson, a wide range of possible activities was given, besides volleyball, archery, and tumbling, the girls were given a chance for involvement in dance, field hockey, and isometrics. Mr. Virgil Sweet stressed a non-competi- tive program, with the boys working in groups or as individuals with tumbling routines. Since the complete renovation of the gym and lockerrooms.the phys. ed. programs can be covered more thoroughly. Mike Thebo tries a flip with the aid of spotters and a safety belt. 35 French and Spanish classes add fourth year )onnie VVoidke and Diane Sleek compose a humorous German skit. Reading novels, and writing compositions added variety to the new fourth year French and Spanish classes. Third year pupils read foreign books. Second year classes studied history and culture, as well as grammar. Students broke from the regular classroom routine to go to Chicago. Latin students went to museums and saw Roman culture and art. German pupils dined at the Zum Deutschen Ecke, a German restaurant. All VHS students were offered the opportunity to travel through Europe during the summer under the sponsorship of the various language classes. 36 Wayne Cohen and Robin Ackerman present their French dialogue to Mr. Geiss. Paul Irvine dons his authentic helmet for German class. 37 Kay Anderson and Diana Lain conduct a mirror experiment to test their manual dexterity. By answering Betsy Morris’ question, Mr. Beckmeyer gains experience while student teaching a U.S. History class. An economics class henefits from Tom Ko- selke ' s explanation of supply and demand. 38 Social studies accents today’s life styles Many of the social studies courses were applied to our every day living this year. A V.IJ. law professor explained to civics classes the rights of citizens while they’re under ar- rest. Sociology students made surveys on drugs and censorship and then applied them to contemporary life. Current events were a major part of history classes, resulting in discussions on abortion and Viet Nam. Mr. Stanier ' s economic classes brought in advertisements that illustrated humor and emotional appeal in advertising technique. Skits and experiments ranging from teaching a child how to read in psy- chology to a seance bringing back Nicholas 111 in European History were also done. Tom Poweska, Linda Brodsky, and Paula Oliver discuss the law of diminishing utility. New equipment aids in shop skills New additions in the shop department were a new squaring shear for metal cutting, a rotary machine for making seams in metal, and a slip roll machine for cone shapes. General metals classes made roasting forks, name plates, hangers, and garden trowels. Vocational machine shop resembled real working conditions. Drawing classes, were given the chance to draw plans in detail and to construct a miniature of a house. Machine drawings class worked on assembly produc- tions and exploded isometrics. Wood working classes constructed podiums for the teachers and a scorer ' s bench for basketball. Ken Ludington displays his skills at working the drill press. Steve Ficken assists ]im Mark in bending circles for fruit baskets. Don Rowland employs accuracy and precision in drafting class. 40 Jim Mackenzie manipulates the hand saw to produce letters for a weather vane. 41 The new refrigerators, part of the home ec. room renovation, require periodic cleaning during class. Homemaking becomes diversified The home economics classes worked on several varied projects this year. The girls dabbled in everything from child develop- ment study to interior decorating. Mrs. Miinch, new to VMS, brought many diversi- fied projects such as making ties and tie- dying. The child development classes worked with children at a local kindergarten to ob- serve educational technique. Interior design, layout, and landscaping were all part of the interior decorating program. The girls drew their own ideas and plans for their home. The students made use of their new demonstration table, where both the teacher and other students could observe projects and demonstrations. During a child development class, Claudia Newell observes a child for passive or aggressive characteristics. Washing and sorting dishes is a big job in the new kitchens. John Mortimer, home ec. student, samples his first assignment of the year. Children aged between three and five visit home ec. classes for a day. 4.1 VICA MEMBERS: ROW 1, TOP TO BOTTOM: T. For the first time, a junior editor and a male staff member contributed their work to the book. Along with a new sponsor. Miss Karen Foster, the staff moved to a new room. Changes in the book itself included a reduced number of pages and the discontinuation of paste- ups. A trip to Chicago for the National Scho- lastic Press Association Convention helped the representatives apply new ideas to a suc- cessful book. Work on the book progressed slowly at first; but after much confusion and deter- mined hard work, the staff became unified. Work continued to produce a book totally different to VHS. This was the Vike’s first holiday champion- ship since 1905. Tom O’Neill, a 6 ' 5 senior, ended the year with a 20.8 point average. Jeff Butterfield led the team in defense, while Mike Frey and Larry Domke led in assists and rebounding. The season ended with a heart-breaking loss to Portage, 81-80, in the sectional. This was only the second time in fifteen years that the Vikings have not won the Sectional. The schedule, including teams such as E.C. Washington. Gary Roosevelt, and Bishop Noll, proved to be one of the toughest in Coach Sweet’s 17 years as Viking coach. The final record was 13 wins and 8 losses. Mr. Ciciora ' s junior varsity team ended their season with a 12-8 record. Richard Metzger broke the rebounding record by grabbing 188 rebounds for one season.
