Students Prepare for Complexities of Business World Typing students gain speed and accuracy through practice. Many students took business courses to prepare for future jobs in the business world. Those interested in clerical or secretarial work received training in typing, shorthand, or bookkeeping. Typing students found that constant practice was needed to complete the required manuscript, “dictionary,” and invoices. This was also true in shorthand as students advanced from the formation of simple words to the rapid pace of dictation. Accuracy was the key word for those in bookkeeping. Applying their new knowledge about the different systems of businesses, these students worked on several projects. Business courses were not restricted to merely me- chanical phases. For those interested in obtaining a basic understanding of business terms and practices, the following were offered: business law, business English, and general business. Guest speakers were invited to talk to the classes. So that the students could apply their knowledge to their lives, much time was spent in discussion. Business English students reported on their occupational interests after inter- viewing successful businessmen and secretaries. Business teachers were Mr. Bryce Rohn, Mr. Garth Johnson, Mr. John Wiggins, and Mr. Erwin Rump. “Now, check your proportion, girls,” Mr. Rohn instructs his shorthand class.

“Seniors, seniors, full of fun, we’re the class of ’61!” yell senior girls at Homecoming skit. The height of excitement came again to VHS in a never-to-be-forgotten Homecoming, Septem- ber 30, 1960. Included in the afternoon pep session was a hilarious skit given by the senior girls portraying their “perfect” Homecoming. That night the Vikings fought valiantly against Rensselaer. Sitting in white convertibles, the Homecoming court watched our team whip the Bombers 35-13. Victory was followed by a de- lightful evening of dancing during which the Student Council president. Curt Bush, an- nounced the seven girls on the court and their escorts. First to approach the throne on the arm of her escorts was Sharyl Stoltz, followed by Janet Eckert, Pat Wagner, Diane DeGrazia, and Mimi Fitzgerald. Next in the spotlight was the runner-up, Olivia Wallace, followed by the crownbearer, Sandy Sweet, and the scepterbear- er, Curt Corneil. At last, Marcia Koepke, our Queen for 1960, was escorted to the throne. She was crowned— and kissed— by the football co- captains, Keith Stanton and Ken Dowd. The lovely Queen’s dance brought an end to our 1960 Homecoming. Overcome with joy, Marcia Koepke receives the Queen’s roses from Miss Margie Nelson signifying her beginning reign as 1960 Homecoming Queen. 18
