An Informed Student Makes a Better Citizen PERSONALITY NEEOS Students in economic classes speculate on the stock market. The study of economics and civics is a basic curricu- lum requirement at Valpo High. Production, distribu- tion, and consumption are the ‘‘big three” that VHS seniors studied while learning about American capitalism under Mr. Roger Schnepf. Seniors gained a broader understanding of our economic system through studies in the Neivsweek, Wall Street Journal , and other related reading materials. Stock market complexities were simplified as each senior studied his “own $1000 investment.” In addition to learning economics, seniors studied government. Civics classes, taught by Mr. Jack Hildreth, endeavored to give our teen-agers a better understanding of their country and encourage them to be good citizens. Also taught by Mr. Hildreth was sociology, an elective open to seniors. After studying human rela- tions, students were able to apply their knowledge to everyday living. “But sir, it says here that Washington was our first presi dent,” argues civics student. 15

Students Prepare for Complexities of Business World Typing students gain speed and accuracy through practice. Many students took business courses to prepare for future jobs in the business world. Those interested in clerical or secretarial work received training in typing, shorthand, or bookkeeping. Typing students found that constant practice was needed to complete the required manuscript, “dictionary,” and invoices. This was also true in shorthand as students advanced from the formation of simple words to the rapid pace of dictation. Accuracy was the key word for those in bookkeeping. Applying their new knowledge about the different systems of businesses, these students worked on several projects. Business courses were not restricted to merely me- chanical phases. For those interested in obtaining a basic understanding of business terms and practices, the following were offered: business law, business English, and general business. Guest speakers were invited to talk to the classes. So that the students could apply their knowledge to their lives, much time was spent in discussion. Business English students reported on their occupational interests after inter- viewing successful businessmen and secretaries. Business teachers were Mr. Bryce Rohn, Mr. Garth Johnson, Mr. John Wiggins, and Mr. Erwin Rump. “Now, check your proportion, girls,” Mr. Rohn instructs his shorthand class.
