The Sciences Build Our Technical Foundations Mathematics is a definite science which requires accuracy and clear thinking. Valparaiso High offered general math, beginning and advanced algebra, plane geometry, and trigonometry. The main problem throughout all the courses seemed to be finding that unknown. In algebra courses this usually involved solving numerous equations. In geometry and trigon- ometry, however, the unknown was found by working with figures. Another phase was the construction and visualization of these figures. This provided a founda- tion for the three dimensional figures of solid geometry. The satisfaction of solving a difficult problem was the reward found in math classes. Math instructors were Mr. William Eiler, Mr. Glen Ellis, Mr. Wesley Maiers, and Miss Sandra Dragoo. Tied closely with math was the Science Department: biology, chemistry, and physics. Biology students studied the plant and animal kingdoms through leaf collections, microscope work, dissections, and indi- vidual projects. Chemistry students discovered the composition of several materials. Playing a major role in this study were laboratory experiments. Finally, students in physics classes studied physical principles combining math know-how and common sense. The biology teachers were Mrs. Carolyn Bush, and Mr. Paul Miller. The chemistry teacher was Mr. Roger Williams, and the physics teacher was Mr. Charles Apgar. Now what’s the tangent of 60 ?
