Mr. G. Warren Phillips, Superintend- ent of Valparaiso Community Schools, is the executive officer of the Board of Education. He sees to it that the laws of the state and policies of the board are carried out. Other responsibilities include the improvement of curriculum and management of personnel and fi- nances. Mr. Phillips is constantly im- proving the school system and through his efforts the Valparaiso Community Schools have become highly rated in Indiana. Mr. Phillips graduated from De Pauw University where he received his Bachelor of Arts, and from Indiana University where he received his Mas- ter ' s Degree. The Board of Education is chosen from the citizens of the community be- cause of their prominence in civic af- fairs and their special interest in the school system. They are elected for varying terms of two, three, and four years by the City Council. The Board makes the laws concerning the schools, and these laws are enforced by the School Superintendent, Mr. Phillips. Mr. Telle as principal of V.H.S. has endless duties in keeping the school running smoothly. He is eager to help any student with a problem and is ad- mired and respected by the whole stu- dent body for his warm smile and for his support of scholastics, social, and athletic activities. Mr. Telle received his A.B. from Hanover College and his M.S. from Indiana University. Valparaiso High School was indeed fortunate when he accepted the responsibility of becoming its principal. 13

Mr. Mann Spitler, Jr., president of the board, is an electrician at Faded Electric in Gary. Mr. Morris Groverman, district manager of the Northern Indiana Public Service Company, is vice president. Mrs. Anne Niequist, secretary, is a housewife and former Valparaiso elementary teacher. Mr. Joseph Durand, the treasurer, is vice-president of the First Federal Savings and Loan Association. Mr. Preston Platt, the fifth mem- ber of the board, is district man- ager of the General Telephone Company. Mrs. Jolley and Mrs. Richard serve as receptionist and secretary to the Superintendent, Mr. G. Warren Phillips. 12
