This year's events are not in themselves very different from the events which have occurred year after year. But their uniqueness lies in each student's inter- pretation of these events. Students express their reaction to school life and its events in everything they do during the year. Yet each student will interpret the school life, and therefore this book, differently depending upon what Valpo High means to the individual . The Senior Class of T959 sincerely hopes, however, that this memory Record will mean as much to the whole student body as it will mean to us, for this Valenian is our record of those never-to-be-forgotten impressions of our senior year. The Board of Education. is chosen from the citizens of the community because of their interest in the school system and their prominence in other civic affairs. lt's primary concern is the management and supervision 'of the school system. Very little appreciation is shown to these civic-minded citizens for the time and effort that they exert to improve our schools. G. WARREN PHILLIPS The Superintendent of the Valparaiso Community Si-hools, G. Warren Phillips, spent the past year solving many important problems. The school enrollment has soared and much planning for the future has had to be made. Mr. Phillips has worked diligently to improve our school program each year. Due to his foresight and leadership., the Valparaiso schools are rated among the top in Indiana. Mr, Phillips graduated from DePauw University with an A.l3. degree and reccivcf a M.S. from Indiana Uni- versity. 14 3 O O KING TELLE The Principal of Valparaiso High School, Mr. King Telle, had the big responsibility of making many de- cisions during the past year. With his keen sense of humor and his loyal school spirit he made V.H.S. run smoothly. I-le was known for his exuberance at pep sections and his cheering inspired our cheer, One More Blast! Mr. Telle began his career at V.H.S. with an A.B. from Hanover College and an M.S. from Indiana University. ALFRED HENKEL and JAMES MUNDY This past year Mr. Alfred Henkel's job as guidance director was the largest it has ever been. He took care ofall the students' schedules, helped the seniors decide their future plans, worked out the four year program for each freshman, counseled with students, and gave a number of tests. Mr. Henkel received his A.B. degree from Valparaiso University and his M.A. from Northwestern University. The Assistant principal, Mr. James Mundy, had charge of attendance. He also kept track of lockers and their combina- tions, directed the hall monitors, sponsored the Student Coun- cil, and saw that sick students got home. He received his B.S. and M.A. from Ball State Teachers College. H.S. halls and classrooms during the first weeks of this school year. Now, however, the freshman class has come into its own, and next year, it will be able to step into the sophomores' shoes with confidence. The first girl class President since l953, Barbara Bobbie Bush led the class through their first year. She was assisted by Vice-President Bill Hildreth, Secretary Judy de Simon, and Treasurer Nita Flowers. The freshmen ioined many clubs! They will always remember the father-son Hi-Y induction and that terrible night of G ,A.A. initiation. Collecting leaves was a part of every freshman's year, along with following the freshman basketball team and the two new freshmen cheer- leaders. All of these activities plus schoolwork helped the freshmen move forward on their uphill climb through high school. President Jim Donley, with Vice- President Ecl Swanson, Secretary Lynne Miller and Treasurer Wes Bucher took charge of the class's activities. In Sep- tember the excited word went around that the class rings had arrived. Soon every junior was sportinga Viking head on his hand. The treasurer began col- lecting class dues in November in anticipation of the Prom. THE PROM! Secrets, grins, and a great amount of planning went into the biggest formal dance of the year. Everyone worked, class spirit was at its best! With the happy end of a successful year, the iuniors look forward to next year. KNEELING: Kathy Hildreth, Treasurer, and Judy Jolley, Secretary. Senior Sales managers busy at work. A group of friendly teenagers, most ofwhom wear '59 class rings on their fingers, constitute thelargest senior class ever. From our freshman year, getting that lost feeling and collecting leaves, through our sophomore year studying hard and watching the new addition being built, during our iunior year, getting class rings, producing a play, organizing the speech banquet and the Junior-Senior Prom--to our senior year we stuck together, and now we emerge as grad- uates. New athletic records, increased feeling of school of school loyalty, and a high school noted for its friendliness are some of the many things we leave behind us. Term papers, senior sales, and the memor- able events of baccalaureate and graduation fill our hearts with solemn thoughts as we realize that this is the end of our high school career. 44 JACK AFFELD Student Council 29 Choir 2, Spanish Club 2. The motto of the Pep Club, To win with dignity---to lose graciously, figured stronglyin the athletic events which these fellow-spectators watched. The white shirt section backed the team against every opponent, displaying true sportsmanship, loyalty, and school spirit. Other 66 activities were: sponsoring the Kick-Off Dance ancl the clance in January, making paper foot balls and basketballs for the team to run through, selling Viking license plates and pep hats The most exciting attraction of the year was the tremendous rise in boy members, the First in the history of the Pep Club. The marching season began in the latesummerwith several practice sessions. The band presented a halftime show at every home football game and became noted for its method of departure--ci single-mon line iig-lagging back across the field. At the marching contest in Merrillville, the Vikings won a first and Mike Butterfield received the coveted drum maior's award. Daily practice of the concert band made the first concert on November l6 a success. Following that came a combined choir-band Christmas concert, a student convocation, and ci spring concert. Laurels were won again at the solo-ensemble contest at Portage and at the concert band contest April l8. The Pep Band provided music for all home basketball games. Opening the season, the Vikes lost to Crown Point, failing in the second half. The squad met Horace Mann, the conference champs, resulting in a stand still and finally being defeated. The Homecoming game was indeed a thrill of all thrills when the Vikes heroically won in the last second of play. This was the first homecoming win in the last five years. The Vikes lost some close ones from then on to Emerson and Tolleston. The record for the season was less than mediocre. However, the grid squad never left the field without the feeling they had done their best, win or lose. All of the games were exciting and most quite close. The team will always be remembered as fighting with all they had and even more. 88 SCHEDULE .l.V. FOOTBALL ROW ONE: J. Miller, M. Seelig, W. Haefling, D. Reynolds, R. Peterson, R, Jones, T.
