Finally, the magic mo- ment arrived when the court and queen were announced by Dick Edinger, Senior Class President. Approaching the throne to the tune of Moonglow, Carol Glover met her two escorts infront of the throne. Next came lovely Jackie Broadhurst. Dick Edinger then announced Mary Ruprecht, who was followed by pretty Sally Carmichael. Jane Van Senus proceeded smilingly down the floor. Finally Judy Raderfloated toward the throne. To the delight of all, Marilyn Sieve rs, clad in a green and white formal, carried her bouquet of red roses to her throne where she was crowned V.H.S, Home- coming Queen of l957-58 by football co-captains Dick Small and Ron Spencer. She then led the queen's dance in which the members of the court danced with their two escorts. There, President Jane Van Senus and Secretary Nancy Phillipslearn- ed many new ideas for improving the club. Since one of the main purposes of the Y- Teens is to render service, the members spon- sored their a nn ual Can-Can Dance to which each girl brought two cans of food, which were given to needy families. Assisting in the school cafeteria was a service of the club, and mak- ing favors for hospital patients was still another. Members also went Christmas caroling to homes of shut-ins during the holiday season. Afte r beginning the year with a get-ac- quainted party, the members planned an induc- tion ceremony in wh ich the new officers and members became installed. A series ofother in- teresting activities followed throughout the year and were climaxed at the spring Mother-Daugh- ter Banquet. Ja Gun Aim Vicar speaks to Y- Teens at Induction. PEP CLUB Guiding school spirit is one of the main functions of the Pep Club, which supports all sportsactivities ofV.H.S. The covering of bas- ketballs and footballs, roping off pep sections, and participating in pep sessions were activities which kept Pep Club membe rs busy before games. Activities which the Club sponsored were the Kick-Off Dance, the Homecoming Dance, and the Basket Ball . A desert party concluded the year's activities, where the newly elected officers were announced and outstanding events of the year reviewed. A fine showing was made at the Sectionals and Regionals in which each member, donned long-sleeved white shirts and pep hats, par- ticipated to spur his team on to victory. Every other Tuesday became newspaper day with all the students anxiously awaiting their Valposts. Afte r learning many helpful hints at I.U. Journalism Institute, Mary Ruprecht, E ditor, and Janet Graham, Assistant Editor, particu- larly strived for the improvement of the layout of the paper. They were unique this year in issuing a free copy to each student on the first day of school. This helped to boost subscrip- tions. Another special feature was an April Fool edition. Bringing the year to a close, the staff had a comb i ned banquet with the Valenian staff, which helped to unite the journalism depart- ment. wg Karen Bailey, Janet Graham, and Mary Ruprecht rushing to meet a deadline. Typing, writing copy, ancl arranging pictures were only a few of the activities which occupied the time of Valenian mem- bers throughout the year. Georgia Nicholas, the 1958 Valenian editor, and Judy Rader, arteditor, gained many helpful hints while attending Indiana University Journalism Institute during the summer. These ideas they put into effect with the help of their staff which consisted of eight Seniors, five Juniors, and one Sophomore. Lloyd Kittredge handled the subscription money thus claiming the title of business manager. As so often shown in the past, the NIHSC conference again proved to be too tough for the abundant but ailing Valpo gridmen. The 1957 Viking football team started the season with a conviction that they were a sporting match with the o-ther members of the confer- ence, but four foes proved to be too much for the team. Those four bitterly overwhelming opponents were: injuries, illness, inclement weather, and tremendous lack of support from the spectators. Injuries and illness reaped their arvest early in the season, thus claim- ing some of the key players Coach Miller had relied on. Poor weather conditions posed problems both during games and the all- important practice sessions. But most of all, the old archenemy of all teams, lack of con- fidence and support, was the biggest hind- rance of all. These four foes, together with the outranking conference teams, caused the Valpo eleven to close the season with a l-8 record. VARSITY BASKETBALL The Valpo Vikings finished a very successful season compiling a 20--5 record, the best record since 1952. Some of the highlights of this past season have been: finishing second in the W.N.I.H. S.C., setting a new school record of 87 points against Whiting, surpassing the total individual points in a season by Scott Ward and Dale Gott setting a new V.H.S. scoring record in the W.N.l. H.S.C.. During the season the Vikings beat such teams as Lafayette Jeff, Gary Roosevelt, and Michigan City, but found E.C. Washington the main stum- bling block by losing three of their five losses to them. The Vikings, beating Jackson, Chesterton. and Hebron, won the Sectional and earned the right to go to the Regionals. In the afternoon game of the Regionals, the Vikings beat Gary Froebel 67 to 52 and then in the championship game were eliminated by E.C. Washington, 80 to 69. The prospects next year look very good with the returning of the four starting Juniors: Knoefel Butch Jones, Chuck Kriston, Scott Ward, and Dale Gott. Even so, the Vikings will miss the fine ball playing of their two graduating seniors, Augie Ralston and Burt Endsley. Track Under Coach Ken Pifer, the 1957 Viking track team turned in another excellent performance. Although the season's record was not spectacular Itwo wins and two losses in dual meets and two wins in their two triangular meetsj, the boys of the Green and White turned in several unexpected, though pleasant surprises. First of the notable feats was Bruce Davis' low hurdle record of :20.2 which he set as he won the conference championship at East Chicago. Later in the season against Michigan City, Bruce tied the Boucher Field record with a :20.9 race. Second of the notable accomp- Iishments was Dick Small 's fine showing in the pole vault. Dick's fine vaults carried him as Far as Indianapolis where he tied for sixth in the state meet with an ll foot, 6 inch jump. As a team the Vikes placed 9th in the Conference Indoor, 2nd in the Rennselaer Relays, 7th in the Conference, 4th in the Sectional, and 4th in the LaPorte Invitational . 60 ' Val po Va l po Va po Va po Va po Valpo VARSITY SCHEDULE 76 176 so 172 67 1 72 sa 275 52 55 Hammond Clark Whiting Chesterton Portage Gary Lew Wallace Hobart Hammond Tech Michigan City Jim Wallace puts the shot! ii 58173 7172 34172 22 41 172 70 375 57 54 Bruse Davis, Conference record holder 61 He's off! if fy JUNIOR VARSITY TRACK, KNEELING: D. In dual and triangular non-conference meets. Valpo defeated Knox, Griffith, and Laporte while losing to Hobart and Chesterton. In ,the conference, both the Varsity and the Freshmen -Sophomore tea ms went for eleven straight victories a ainst no defeats to win the conference championships. Each team was awardeda beautiful trophy for their victories. In the larger meets, the Vikes ran third in the conference meet of 22 teams at Laporte, third in the Hobart Invitational of 26 teams, and won a thirteen team Sectional at Hammond and the right to run in the State meetatlndianapolis, where they finished 13th in a field of 18 teams. Junior Scott Ward was the number one runner. In defeating Bagby of Chesterton, he won his 22nd meet in 3 years. He was 2nd at Hobart, 2nd in the Conference, and won the Hammond Sectional for the second straight year. He setanew schoolrecord of 9:38 at Gleason and a Forest Park record of 10:49. 5. Warren Phillips, superintendent of the school system, makes recommendations to the board and sees that their policies are im- plemented. The increasing school enrollment of the corporation has bee n accurately blue- printed through hisoffice and the building pro- gram has kept pace with the needs. Much credit for this planning is due to the foresight of Mr. Phillips, who holds an AB de- gree from DePauw University and an MS from Indiana University. The Board of Education is chosen from the citizens of the community because of their in- terest in the school system and their demon- strated qualities of leadership in other fields. lts primary concern is the management and su- pervision of the school system. Too little ap- preciation is shown to these civic-minded cit- izens for the time and e ffo rt that they spend to gain an understanding of school business. Although his responsibilities a re many, he takes a genuine interest in the welfare of each student. Mr. Telle received his AB degree from Hanover College and his MS from Indiana Uni- versity. Mr. James Mundy, Assistant Principal gives help in the solution of administrative problems. He is in close contact with student problems that affect attendance. Formerly the Principal of the Junior High, he is known for his friendliness and understanding. Mr. Telle and Mr. Mundy, Principal and Assistant GUIDANCE OFFICER Mr. Alfred Henkel is the director of guid- ance. Problems of schedule preparation, col- lege selection, and vocational selection are often solved with his help. His advice to stu- dents an d parents has proved to be very val- uable . 75 fldminiatnation As secretary to the principal, Mrs. Price encounters more prob- lems than those involved in corres- pondence and reports. The constant traffic of m inor problems does not furnish ideal working conditions. Despite these handicaps the work is done pleasantly and efficiently. Mrs. Jolley is able to afford the office of superintendent a certain a- mount of freedom from interruption through he r efforts as receptionist. Her cheerful voice is the one heard more often in telephone conversa- tions. Calls and messages are chan- neled very efficiently to the proper place. PAUL M. SECOND ROW: Mr. Deethardt, Mr. Brammell, Sponsors. With complete confidence, the Junior Class began work i n g on their Junior Prom early in the school year. They worked, under the capable direction oftheir chosen officers and sponsors, the complete year to create a very striking effect needed for a great Prom. The Juniors grew closer in understanding wh i l e working together on the Junior Class Pl ay and the never-to-be-forgotten Speech Banquet. The Class Ring of T959 proved to be a great change from previous years. Being long overdue, the rings were eagerly ac ce pte d and welcomed at the time of their arrival. The approach of Spring found the Juniors ready and eager for their last year in high school--their Senior Year. BACK ROW: Mr. Williams, Miss McGillicuddy, Mr. Johnson. Mr. Hildreth, Sponsors. We're the Class of '58 finally became a reality to the Seniors . Gazing into the Mirror of Memories which reflects their four, fleeting, fun-filled years at V.H.S., they real ized with a lump in their throats that their high school career had a ctual l y come to a close. Certain activities are prominent in their minds as they look back ove r these years. Their beautiful Junior Prom, How Deep ls The Ocean, will' never be forgotten in the minds of those who helped to make it a suc- cess. Their Junior Class Play, Our Town, will 'long be remembered, also. Senior sales were competantly carried on underthe direc- tion ofthe Senior sponsors. Taking turns sell- ing candy and ice cream at basketball games, the Seniors drew money from their profits to help finance the Valenian and to present a gift to the school. The leaders of their class performed their duties successfully, and their Homecoming Queen, Marilyn Sievers, reign- ed magnificently at the Homecoming festivi- ties. The Class of '58 witnessed the highest enrollment in V.H.S, to date, and was lucky to attend classes in a new addition. Finally the day came when the Seniors donned their caps and gowns and real ize d that they could remember their high school years on l y by gazing into their Mirror of Memories.
