The addition in- cludes ten class rooms, a cafeteria dining room, and a kitchen. The classrooms on the top floor are especially suited for so- cial studies and English. One has a stage for use by the speech classes. The main floor is fitted for business instructions, typewriters and adding machines dominate it. The main feature of the lower floor is the cafeteria which seats 160. The open house which was held on Sunday, November ll, drew a grand res- ponse from the public. Many students and teachers were on hand to answer questions about the new as well cs the old part of our school. With the aid of the newspaper, funds soon began accumulating. Businessmen, alumni, students, and the general public did their part. The results were so successful that notonly was a football scoreboard purchased, but also two basketball scoreboards. The football scoreboard was installed on the north bank where it is easily visable to all spectators. The old basketball scoreboard in the southwest corner of the gym was re- placed and another added in the northeast corner. This was the biggest high school-corr.mun- ity project in recent years and resulted in Scoreboards which add to everyone's sporten- ioyment. 5 ,,. , , . , ,V .- ,.,. , . - - he .. .msketmaii scnrczma 1j'.-.'4xi.nftli:jjzit, rd wa Charles Gibbs operates the radio set. We played Griffith and the final score was 20 to T9 in favor of Griffith. After the game our Homecoming dance began. Finally the moment ever one had been waiting for arrived. At l0:3O the rizncing stooped as it was time to begin the processional . The first memberof the queens court, Sandra White, walked solemnly down the center of the floor. As she approached the throne, she was met by two mem- bers of the football team. Two different senior bo escorted each girl. Next came Peggy Bolles. Folfowing her were Chloe Gott, Jolene Brown, Marilyn George, and lastly Kathy Vietzke. Finally our queen, Judy Huff, came upon the scene carrying a bouquet of red roses. Our co- captains, Dick Waymire and Ben Hummel, escorted her to the royal throne where she was crowned and became V.H.S. Homecoming Queen of T956-57. The queens dance followed. The main activ- ities carried out by the club this year included the Kick-Off Dance, held after the first foot- ball game of the season, the elections of Home- coming Queen and Court, and the pep sessions held before all basketball and football games, and special swimming and track meets. The cr- rangements performed before every game were: the covering ofa basketball or football, the rop- ing off of the pep section, and the making of a huge poster which encouraged the team. All year the members were kept busy raising money by sell ing pep hats, V. H. S. fountain pens, and Coca-Cola at home basketball games. The highlightof the Pep Club was the annual Dessert Party which was held at the close of the year. At this occasion awards were presented, the coming year's officers announced, and the outstaniing events of the year reviewed. Wickersham, D, Edinger, R, Endsley, Uounq Cjnid Squad Spirit, that quality which makes a team, was an outstanding factor in the i956 grid squad. The team fought to the finish in all games including those contests against strong Columetareo teams. Lack of experience, stemming from only five returning lettermen and iniuries to ten players during the season, hampered Coach Miller's squad and forced him to use many inexperienced playe rs . These factors, though lowering this year's record, will give Coach Miller some- thing to work with next year. Fifteen lettermen will be on the i957 team. This will be enough sf to fill every position on the team with experienced gridders plus four trained substitutes. Those graduating seniors who have donned green and white jerseys for the last time are, Jerry Thomas, Roy Endsley, Dennis Murvihill, Rebel Waymire, Ben Hummel, Joe Masterson, Randy Wickersham, and Bob Ebersold. This year's team will not be remembered as the team who lost a lot of games, but as the team that fought with all they had, plus some, to the rugged end. Schedule V.H.S. i9 Crown Point 6 V.H.S. K' X 'fx Telle, and Vice-Principal, Mr. Willman Valparaiso High School Principal, Mr. King Telle, is deeply respected for his fair- ness and sincere interest in his dealings with the students. He is also admired for his friend- liness to all and his keen sense of humor. Mr. Telle not only shows a genuine in- terest in the scholastic, social, and athletic activities of our school, but also in each stu- dent as an individual. A graduate of Hanover College and lndi- ana University, Mr. Telle has done everything in his power to make V.H. S. the fine school it is today. Since the increased enrollment ofV.H. S. has made the duties of principal much too heavy for ond man to handle, an assistant principal, Mr. Clyde Willman, has been ad- ded to the faculty. Mr. Willman, besides assisting Mr. Telle, acts as attendance of- ficer. Formerly the principal of the junior high, Mr. Willman is known for his friendli- ness and just sense of discipline. g 'Ike quiclinq tance For the first time this year, Valpo High has employed a full time Guidance D.rec- tor, Mr. Alfred Henkel. This is being ac- complished by far-sighted plan- ning that has resulted so far in the acjuisition of several new sites an the construction of two ele- mentardy schools and the high school a iition. Superintendent Phillips, and the :chool Board, Reg Hildreth, O,R, Burns, and Jess Claudon. behind the acenea Mrs. Betty Price, secretary toMr. Telle, efficiently handles the many details that oc- cur in the administration of a high school the size of Valparaiso. Many will go on to college, while others will become the homemakers and business personnel of our country. Although high school is over for us, the class of l957, we will never for- get the toil, joys, and sorrows encountered in our wanderings through these halls of learning. This book is our treasure chest of memories. We hope it encloses a few of yours also and that you will treasure it as we do. ,fb I 'F' Lff Jfjmd fdgibufpw YEARBOOKS .
