THE flLEHM 1956 Sen ior Class VALPARAISO HIGH SCHOOL Valparaiso, Indiana Superintendent Superintendent of Valparaiso City Schools, G. Warren Phillips is still serving in his tre- mendously important office as efficiently as ever. His associations and duties have been made somewhat easier, however, due to the com - oletion of the spacious offices built for his work. Most of the students have heard him speak on thought-provoking subjects at con- vocations, and those who know him personal ly recognize him as distinguished and capable. Mr. Phillips received his A. B. from De- Pauw University and his M.S. from Indiana University. ' Principal Mr. King Telle, principal of Valparaiso High School, deeply respected by the students for his fairness and sincere interest in his deal- ings with the students, is also admired for his friendl iness to all. Strict in his sense of discipline, Mr. Telle always shows a loyal interest in scholastic and social activities. Although he hasan innumer- able list of jobs and responsibilities, he takes a genuine interest in the individual welfare of his students. He received his A. B . from Hanover and his M.S. from Indiana University. NANCY PECK A member of the class of ' 56, Nancy Peck completed her senior year in the office of the superintendent as recep- tionist for Mr. Phillips. Her competent work and cheerful disposition gave the administrator ' s of- fice a vibrant sparkle. Seerpfai ' ips BETTY PRICE Mrs. Betty Price, as secretary to Mr. Telle, has to listen to and soothe each and every student who comes to her with a separate whim. Her ability to make decisions and to care for the many duties of the office has made her popular with officials and students alike. GRACE RICKARD An immense amount of responsibility is placed upon the shoulders of one woman, Grace Rickard, Mr. Phillips ' secretary. In spite of the burdens of her work, she is always smiling when approached. Her efficiency and pleasantness have made her one of the most well -liked women in the city school system. ilnrl ■ % REG HILDRETH O. R. BURNS JESS CLAUDON HIM II II OF MUTIOI The Valparaiso School City system is backed up by three important men, O.R. Burns, president; Reg Hildreth, secretary; and Jess Claudon, treasurer. This policy-making body, although not as closely associated with the students as some of the other administrators, is really more directly connected with our welfare. Coach Miller began the season with a host of lettermen, but were rated by the coaches of the conference to finish in the cellar. The team showed spirit that had been lacking in many of the previous teams and were praised by many of the sports fans as the hardest hitting team that Valpo ever had. Although the schedule shows a less than mediocre season, a look at the record books will show a different picture: the Vikings outscored, outgained, and had more first down ' s than their opponents. In the Homecoming game, the Vikings fought W h i t i n g , 1954 State Champion, to a draw, and in the last home game of the season, battled Lew Wallace, ranked first in Gary, to a 13-13 tie. Proof of the team ' s strength was that five members were nominated for the all-conference team, four of which received recognition. Three players, tackle Bill Hinkle, halfback Fred Doelling, and guard Bob Collings, received honorable mention for All-State. VARSITY BASKETBALL Coaches: Mr. White, Mr. Sweet, Mr. Rhoda, Mr. Doane The 1955-56 basketball season will in- evitably be remembered as one of the most scrambled season ' s a team has ever had. In starting the Vikes dropped the first three games by a total of 5 points. As the season continued the team proved to be an up and down ball club finishing with eight wins arid thirteen losses. Some of the highlights of the season were! Fred DoeJIing ' s setting the record of 36 points for one game and later scoring 356 points fora record indivi- dule total for one year. He also broke the career record with a total of 639 points for three years of varsity competition. Moose Keller dropped through 31 points for a Boucher Gym record, and the team trounced Hobart 81-56 for a new team record. As the season ended the Vikings had secured a well-requarded sixth position in the con- ference. JUNIOR VARSITY BASKETBALL, BACK ROW, LEFT TO RIGHT: Caoch C. J. Doane; K. Jones, B. Endsley, W. Hampered by the graduation of Ron Lines, Jim Brown, Delos Fry, Gene Haman, and Ray Kuhrts, Coach Ken Pifer turned out a good team. Having a little better than a mediocre year, the Green White won three dual meets and one triangular affair. They lost two dual meets and placed second in another triangular meet. Tom MacDonald, Duane Hamacher, and Don Kyes qualified for the regionals. Only Tom MacDonald, who survived the regionals for V. H. S. , went on to place sixth in the state meet, putting the shot 50 ' 7 , which broke Delos Fry’s record for the previous year of 49 ' 2 3 4. 59 5TH ROW: Mr. Pifer, Coach, B. Endsley, L. Johnson, D. Swimming Mike Keller, George Kelso SWIMMING TEAM Finishing their second year as a team representing Valparaiso High School, the V.H.S. swimming team completed a good year. Although their record showed a mediocre year by having 6 wins, 6 losses, and placing 10th in the state, it must be taken into consideration that the team was competing with some of the toughest teams in the state, thus showing up well for only being organized for two years. Although four seniors are graduating. Coach Trost thinks that next year ' s team will be just as good with a promise of becoming better, being built on lower class- men. The swimming team has a great potential and is no doubt a permature fixture in the V.H.S. Larry Bamesburger BACK ROW, LEFT TO RIGHT: Mr. Telle, Sponsor; L. Kittredge, G. Mead, G. Thorne, T. Telle, L.
