Warren Phillips, superintendent of our city schools, has been the Viking administrator for the last ten years. Along with the board of education, he is re- sponsible for the school city ' s finances and policies. His most recent problem is the expanding change in the size of en- rollment throughout the city. To meet this increase a future building program is planned. We feel fortunate to have such on efficient person heading our school system. Mr. Phillips received his A.B. from De Pauw University and his M.S. from Indi- ana University. f- rincipat The Viking leader for the last eight years has been our principal, Mr. King Telle. Mr. Telle is admired by all the students because of his high ideals in running the school and his fairness in dealings with them. He is loved for his never failing humor and continued in- terest in student activities. In spite of the heavy load of responsibilities on his shoulders, students are always assured that he will be free to help them when they need him. Mr. Telle received his A.B. from Han- over College and his M.S. from Indiana University. ORVAL BURNS GUS MARKS LYNNET CASBON v oard of C ducation Serving on the Board of Education for the Valparaiso City Schools are three prominent business men. They are ap- pointed for terms of three years to man- age the affairs of the schools. Lynnet Casbon, president, and Orval Burns, treas- urer, have served faithfully for several years. This is the first year for Gus Marks, secretary. These men have suc- cessfully guided our schools to their standard of education. We appreciate their efficient work. JOSEPHINE MUSTER s. ecreiarieS Josephine Muster, a new-comer to V. H. S., became Mr. Telle ' s secretary last fall. She has taken over her many tasks in an efficient way and quickly won a place in the hearts of the student body with her cheerful smile and help- fulness. Grace Rickard, secretary to the super- intendent, has celebrated her twenty- fifth year in Valparaiso High School this year. The students appreciate her friendli- ness to them as she goes about her many responsibilities. GRACE RICKARD II Bigelow. Uutenian S taj-f Taking snapshots, collecting subscrip- tions, supervising class pictures, doing paste-ups, and finally sending the Va- lenian to press; this is what the Valenian staff does each year. When the book is received, though, all this work is remem- bered somewhat vaguely. In preparation for next year a number of junior assist- ants were picked. These students also helped to compile the book, and offered valuable assistance. Preparing a story of the V. H. In winning seven out of nine contests the Vikes gained an aver- age of 244 yards per game, and scored 183 points to 89 for the opponents. The season opener against Crown Point was won 13-6, in a driv- ing rain storm at Boucher field. A win over Griffith preceeded Volpo ' s first loss 7-0, on a long pass by Gary Mann. The peak of the sea- son came as the Millermen trounced our tra- ditional rival, Hobart, 14-13 by way of a last minute touchdown. In the finals a veterctn Crown Point team won the trophy. Then came injuries and the annual woes of the hard January conference schedule. The Vikings suffered thirteen straight defeats. ' s 1953 track season proceeded with a 60-49 win over Ham- mond Clark. The Vikes then took a triangular meet over Crown Point and Whiting .in their stride, but soon after fell to Gary Wallace 66 to 43. After smearing county rival Chesterton, OS well as East Chicago Roosevelt, the green and white went down, under the 1953 I. H. S. A. A. champions, Froebel of Gary, 102 to 82. The respectability of the Viking squad was af- firmed by this tough loss to Indiana ' s best. In the victory over Hobort, Ron Lines set a nev ' V. H. S- record in the pole vault with a 12-foot mark. -68- After easy wins against Gary Tolleston and Hammond Tech, the Hammond Sec- tional arrived on May 8. Ron Lines again shattered a mark in this sectional with an 11 ' 8 vault as Reine Tauck, Deloss Fry, Bill Wiseman, Ken Downing, and Kenny Berrier also placed. However, Bill Wiseman, half miler, was the only Vah paraiso runner to go to the state finals m Indianapolis from the regional. The season concluded with Michigan City losing to V. H. S. In this meet Lines vaulted 12 ' 1 to set another record, and Ray Kuhrts with a 23.7 seconds time in the 220 yard dash also established a new mark. β’ ' ' 3r ' !3!Sit- .
