Fight on every field and never yield. It these Words would always re- main the motto ot all who pass through the doors of Valparaiso High School at gradua- tion, the purpose ot all that is taught here would have been achieved. V f fiwl .S Northview School, which is to be the ideal, modernistic school, has been the main project this year of Mr. G. Warren Phillips, superin- tendent of our city school system. ln addition, new modernized kitchens have been built for classes in home economics and a new band room for the band. His efficient planning and work have re- sulted in a school system we are all proud to be a part of. For six years he has worked with us and for us. We all feel very proud to have Mr. Phillips for our superintendent. Mr. Phillips received his A. B. from DePauw University and his M. S, from Indiana Unver- sity. p . When in need of advice, students often seek Mr. King Telle, who has served as our principal and advisor for five years. l-le has helped to create better school spirit and good sportsman- ship and has helped us to gain a stronger foothold in the world of tomorrow, Always on hand at all school functions, he has set an un- wavering example for the entire student body. lf ever a student needs help or has a prob- lem, he can feel free to talk it over with one who is a real friend at all times - our own King Telle. Mr. Telle received his A. B, from Hanover College and his M. S. from Indiana University. 16 .S Within the bright yellow Walls of Mr. Telle's office, one can usually find Marilyn Lembke, his secretary, to greet him with a cheerful smile. Secretary to the superintendent, Grace Rickard, has filled her position faithfully for many years. Both of our secretaries are very efficient, be- ing both neat and courteous. Their friendly spirit and Willingness to help all have made them well-liked by everyone. We hope they Will remain with us in the years to come and continue their excellent work. lltamcfceffcfncaiakw The Board of Education of Valparaiso City Schools consists of three members appointed for three-year terms. Serving for their second year are Orval R. Burns, treasurer, Lynnet M Casbon, president, and Walter H. Hathaway, secretary. Much time and effort has been spent by these three men, Who have shouldered the full responsibility of their many duties as members of the school board. We truly appreciate their most competent work. 17 WEWV Brock. Fred: Biology - Purdue University, B. P. E., M. P. E. Cavan, Mary Lee: Librarian - Hanover Col- lege, A.. B. At this time, the present grad- uating class of 1951 originated. As the first lap on its four-year journey started, the class elected George Kilavos, president, Bob Bailey, vice-president, and William Iohnston, secretary-treasurer. Also, Susy Brownell, jim Brownell, Charles Swyn- enberg, and Bob Bailey were elected Stu- dent Council representatives. As freshies' the members participated in the usual acti- vities - freshmen initiation CMy, how those paddles hurtll, homecoming parade, and dances. Bob Bailey, presidentg Charles Swynen- berg, vice-president, and Ronald Buls, sec- retary-treasurerg were the officers elected by the 124 sophomores in 1948. Now the class was getting into the swing of things, with everyone enjoying clubs and activities. Don- na Grieger, Kenneth Woodruff, Bob Bailey, and Terry Murphy were the Student Coun- cil representatives. Senior Class Sponsors: Miss ln 1950, 130 upper classmen juniors were progressing rapidly on their journey. Terry Murphy was elected president, Glen Ridg- way, vice-president, lane Maxwell, -secre- tary-treasurerg and George Kilavos, Cynthia Doran, Vernette Dalke, Charles Swynen- berg, Terry Murphy, and Glen Ridgway were elected Student Council representa- tives. The juniors, having completed their English 5 speech course, held the annual speech banquet. This was truly enjoyed by all, and none of the class will ever forget their toastmistress. Then it was May and time for the junior-Senior promenade. The effect produced by the theme, Moonlight and Roses , was very beautiful, and worth all the work and effort put forth by each member of the class. It is the end of the journey now, and there are 108 graduating seniors who will receive their diplomas on june 7, 1951. 1 am sure that each one of these seniors can and does look back on his four years at Val- paraiso High School with feelings of hap- piness and friendships gained from his class. Miller, formerly an assistant coach. Valpo was severely handicapped all season by costly injuries. Valpo exploded off the T for power drives and on a McGarvey to Bailey pass- ing combination that netted many Viking touchdowns. The line gave satisfactory sup- port to this attack and for the most part did a creditable job in defending the Green and White goal line. The Vikings looked their best in the sea- son opener against the Bulldogs and in the victory over Rensselaers Bombers. The th ff'-f worst showing ot the campaign was at Mer- rillville. Valpo rolled up one ot its biggest point totals in that 33-O rout of Lowell. At Boucher Bowl and out ot town, the Vikings received good support from their many fans. The Vikings renewed their rivalry with the l..aPorte Slicers and played Portage Twp. for the first time. Valpo, as it has since l947, is still playing an independent schedule outside the West N. l. H. S. C. Coach Miller was called to the armed services at the close of the season. This year's Viking pigskin edition was dominated by underclassmen and with a host of returning letter winners Valpo ought to be much tougher on the 'gridiron in l95l. Jia. Plays Ten Games The Freshman and juniorf varsity squads were combined in- to one eleven. Assistant coaches, Bob Dille and Stanley White, a newcomer to V. H. S., tutored the Freshman-Sophomore gridders. The young Vikings played a ten- game schedule and finished with four wins, two ties, and four losses. These boys should develop in- to good material for the Green and White varsity in coming sea- sons. Upper-Right: There It Goesl Middle-Right: Managers, B. Schumak- er, D. Bundy, D, Black, W, Dick. The Vikings were an inexperienced team, and several key players were kept on the sidelines because of ineligibility and in- juries. However, the Vikings were not to be denied victory, and got their tirst Win by sur- prising l-lammond's Techs Tigers. Then Valpo slumped and did not Win again until the con- solation game With Portage in the Third An- nual Holiday Tourney. The Christmas vaca- tion event Was Won by North Iublson. The Vik- ings looked good tor three quarters against top-ranked Froebel. Valpo looked its Worst in losing to the Whiting Oilers. Top: Med Walsh, guard, Bob Eigels- bach, guard, lim Cavanaugh, guard. The best performance and most important win, was the major upset Valpo turned in over Hammonds Wildcats at the Civic Center. This victory brought Valpo wide attention and much comment in the Calumet Region. Valpo was then sparked to a five'game winning streak which was snapped by Emerson. The Vikings fell off the pace and wilted in the last two games. Valparaiso won lU and lost lil, including tourney play, and wound up with a 5-5 record in the West N. l. H. S. C. for a fifth place tie. This was Valpo's best record in the conference since l945. The Viking cagers continued to show that they could give any West N. l. H. S. C. team a good fight. Over here at Boucher Gym, the Vikings blasted Ches- terton 54-37 in a show-down game and Calumet Twp., 65- 34. Valpo moved on to Gary Memorial Auditorium and an- nihilated Kouts 67-32 in the af- ternoon semi-tinals. At night, in repetition ol last year, Froe- bel eliminated Valpo, 58-48 in the championship game. Coach Bob Dille completed his third year as headman ot Viking basketball fortunes. l-le has worked hard to bring Val- po up to the place where it used to be in lndiana high school basketball. At the lett the Slicers are hoping for a rebound on this one - the coaches talk this over - and the managers, Bob Zell, Vernon Paxton, Bill Dick, and David Black are ready for business. l , mo so t FRESHMAN TEAM - Top Row: Coach White, T. Track Team Undeteated In Dual Competition The l950 Viking thinclads rose to summits of envied tame by going unbeaten in all their regular meets. lt was an- other great season for Valpo on the cinders and in the pits. Coach Ken Pifer's Green and White also broke six school records. Bad weather postponed several meets and cancelled three others, but the Vikings were in top form as soon as they got outside. At the University of Chica-- go Fieldhouse, Valpo finished in eighth p.lace in the annual West-N. l. H. S. C. meet. The Vikings were in seventh spot at the pre-conference and four men qualified for the confer- ence final at Elkhart, Kilavos in the 100, Bailey in the 440, Tarnow in the mile, and Tauck in the high jump. Bailey tallied the only Valpo points at the finals, copping a second in the quarter-mile event. Valpo won third place in the East Chicago Sectional tor the first time. The Vikings fin- ished right behind Hammond l-ligh and Clark, for a total of 26 points. Six Vikes got the right to compete in the Mish- awaka Regional held the next week. In the sectional, the half- mile relay crew got second place, Dillingham managed a tie for fourth in the pole Vault, Tauck qualified in the high jump getting a fourth place tie, Tarnow was fourth in the mile distance, and Kilavos was good for a third in the century dash. At the Regional Bailey, taking a second in the 440, was the only Viking to place. Bob then went to the State Finals. I The new marks set by Mr. Pifer's l950 edition were the following: George Kilavos did the 100 yard dash in 10.3 sec- onds, and cut the 220 down to 23.0. Bob Bailey lowered the 440 mark down to 51.0 and held the state's best indoor record. ln the half-mile, it was Chuck Lembke' who clipped off the distance in 2:05.l. Herman Tar- now crossed the finish line in 4:45.4 to break the mile record. The half-mile relay quartet, comprised of speedsters Bob Bailey, George Kilavos, Dick Beach, and Bob Iohnson, raced home in l:35.3. Valpo opened its season by defeating Lew Wallace. The Vikings smashed the Hornets 671f2 - 4lV2 on Boucher Field. Valpo then proceeded to give Whiting its annual spring greasing. The Vikes ran away from Oilers for an easy 70 - 39 win. A. has accom- plished much through the ac- tivities that it sponsors. Sports are held after school with the exception of Noonday League, during the noon hour on Wed- nesday, and bowling on Monf day. Bowling is a new sport in V. H. S. Under the direction of Nita Trulock, it was in its sec- ond year. This year, as an add- ed attraction, a tournament was held with high individual honors going to Wilma Green and doubles to Evelyn Braun and Ruth Ehrisman. Pat Shan- non was captain of the win- ning team. Of the major sports, basket- ball and volleyball are indoor sports held in the late tall and winter months, speedball is an outdoor sport played in the tall and softball is an outdoor sport played in the fall and spring. The seniors proved to be the mightest in the class tourna- ment in speedball and volley- ball. Other sports are track, tennis, tumbling, archery, and the Noonday League sports which were headed by Sue Brown and Mary Lou Wells. The captain of the winning basketball team is presented with a cup at the annual ban- quet. ln order to become a win- ning team, skill and teamwork are necessary, along with sportsmanship and regular at- tendance. These awards are given at the annual spring banquet. Points are earned by regular attendance, by participation in all sports, being chosen captain of a team, winner of class tourna- ment, winner or runner-up of round robin, qualifying in the NA or B teams, a G. A. A. Board member, or by being elected an officer. Miscellaneous points may be earned by participation in any sport that is not cov- ered in school activities. ln most cases a point is 'given for each hour spent. Among the social affairs, the seniors al- ways look forward to the annual G. A. A.- Freshman initiation, during which all pros- pective members are the chosen victims. Big sisters are chosen to act as guides to the newly initiated members. A. was started in this High School in 1930 and has grown to till an im- portant role in the life of most high school girls. G. A. A. provides a time for relaxation and enjoyment. lt teaches one co-ordination, skill, and self-control as well as getting along with others. The thrill of competition stresses an urge to work and to co-operate with others in ac- complishing a desired goal. By co-operating and working in such a way, one learns the value of clean and fair sportsmanship, which is a goal well worth attaining. All in all, it may be said that G. A. The purpose of a Y-Teen club is 'ito build a fellowship of women and girls devoted to the task of realizing in our common life those ideals of personal and social living to which we are committed by our faith as Christians . A .large part of a Y-Teen's time is spent in serving others. Each week six different girls helped with the school lunch. The club gave baskets of food to three needy fami- lies, sold T. B. Seals, and gathered old clothes for a family in Kentucky. A Y-Teen seeks to improve both herself and her attitude toward others. A worship service was a part of every meeting. Nine girls attended the Northern lndiana Y-Teen Conference in Gary, while two were sent to the state summer conference. They had been behind the players all sea- son long. Before the formation of the Booster Club, the team was sadly aware of the poor showing made by the students at out-of- town games. Now the, club charters buses to allow more students to attend these games. The cheerleaders are sponsored by the Booster Club, which pays one-half the cost of the uniforms. The meetings, held once a week after school, include various things such as act- ing, makeup, lighting, scenery, and dramatf ic criticism. At this time the coming plays and other activities of the club, such as dances and a trip to a play in Chicago, are discussed. ln order to be a good member, loyalty, cooperation, and sportsmanship are needed, for although some may join for just one phase such as plays, the members are graded on everything they do, for this is a credit club. Future Homemakers Gain Valuable Experience There will always be a few students who do not care to learn anything and take courses merely to receive credit for them. But most home economics students feel that they should learn all they can in their field since it will affect them every day of their lives. This interest in home economics is shown by interest in the Future Homemak- ers of America Club. One of the babies of V. H. S. organizations, it has just com- pleted its second year. The club held its meetings in the new foods laboratory, which contains an auto- matic dishwasher, garbage disposal, wash- ing machine, dryer, and other rriodern equip- ment used by homemakers. Early in the year a f'Coke Party was held to interest new members. Subsequent meetings were visited by members of the home economics department of Valparaiso University who furnished information about possible careers in home economics. ln order to earn money to extend the club program, the members sold Christmas cards and stationery. Solid Sending Is Sure When Backed By Enthusiasm and Hard Work During the fourth period class each day, music can always be heard swelling out of the band room. This organization, under the direction of Mr. Harold Rogers, is a very hard working, musically minded group. Most of the members of the band started playing in the grade schools. With this musical background and with the aid of private lessons, most members become ex- cellent musicians. Another help in making it the band that it is, is the sectional prac- tice when the members of the different sec- tions of the band get together after school and practice. The members gain the honor of holding the first chair in their section by challenging the other members at these sectional practices. The band starts its year by going to Riverview, at which time it marches and en- joys a day of entertainment. When school starts, the marching season begins. The band immediately starts practicing differ- ent flank movements and formations on the football field. At this time it is divided into two sections: the A and the B bands. At most football games the band presents vari- ous clever numbers and stunts during the half. Added color is also provided by the strutting majorettes. lt also marches at the Valparaiso University Homecoming parade. Then, going into the concert season, it puts on its fall concert in December. After this various members prepare for the Solo- Ensemble Contest at East Gary. Many came back with superior ratings. Another concert was presented by the band in March and the spring concert in May. The band year is ended by playing as it does every year, for Commencement. The band has many parties and also sponsors dances. lt is backed by an organ- ization called the Band Parents. ll' 45735 X? ., , Q ', H T7 -SQ ' lf , BAND omcsns Iim Rader ----- President Marjorie Gill - Vice-President Gerri Henneinke - Secretary-Treasurer Marjorie Murphy - Recording Secretary Laurel Ashbaugh - - Assistant Secretary Bob Davis - - - Librarian Kenneth Price Bob Barkley - - Publicity - - - Senior Property X XW 'f'?'ggW'1 I , 1 ,i?QL:bsY'W' 4 1 W. Practice Produces Careful Harmony The Choir of V. H. S., under the direc- tion of Mrs. Mary Myers, seems to be en- larging and getting better each year. The public appearances of the Choir started with the presentation of a Thanksgiving Pro- gram, which was soon followed by their Annual Christmas Concert. The Annual Choir Contest in April, and a Spring Con- cert and singing for Commencement fol- low on the agenda of this organization. . Many members of the Choir joined en- sembles and many sang solos. The various ensembles appeared for different engage- ments from talent programs to banquets. The Caro.lers , a group of eight formed at Christmas time, began by caroling for the schools and the hospital. Two girls' ensem- bles, the Note-ables and the. l-larmon- ettes , were also formed. All three of these groups sang at the Solo-Ensemble Contest at East Gary. The Harmonettes came home with a superior rating which enabled them to go on to lndianapolis. Many solo- ists entered the contest with the majority re- ceiving superiors. Two duets, Barbara Wil- son and Iim McGarvey - Ioanne Muster and Bonnie Eckert, entered the contest, each receiving first. The accompanist, Marlene Wolfe, is one of the very best. She played for ensembles and soloists and this really kept her busy. Choir Officers: Barbara Wilson, librarian, Bhodora Marshall, secretaryg Charles Sanford, robe chair- mang Sharon Flick, treasurer, Iames McGarvey, president, Elsie Squire, vice-president. f School Applauds Results ln order to pay the individual entrance tees for the contest, each member sells the amount of the tee in tickets for the Spring Concert. The Choir is divided into six teams for the ticket selling. The three Winning teams are entertained by the three losing Top: The Choir in one of its numerous public appearances entertained relatives and guests of the Senior Class at Commencement. Lower Left: The Harmonettes practicing tor the Contest. Barbara Wilson, Io Ann Shumaker, Ruth teams at a party sometime after the con- cert. This system creates competition, which in turn increases the ticket sales, and both the Winners and the losers have a very en- joyable time at the party.
