Text from Pages 1 - 88 of the 1950 volume:

Valenian 1950 During the warm summer months these vine-covered walls stand sheltering the empty halls inside Which are waiting only for au- tumn to come, bringing life, warmth, and happiness to them again. All through the long winter they stand covered with snow and yet unchanged .... Until spring unfolds in all her beauty, sending out each senior with many happy memories. PUBLISHED BY THE SENIOR CLASS OF VALPARAISO HIGH SCHOOL VALPARAISO, INDIANA PUB1IC LIBRARY Dedication Mr. Koch, who would have been one of the sponsors of the 1950 senior class, was respected, honored, and loved by all who knew him. In remembrance of him and of his high ideals, we sincerely dedicate this volume of the Valenian. VA AISO PUBLIC LIBRARY V ' 82 05717 Contents Glallel . , . Paae ? Β£ p,osi i . . . The picturesque campus adds an air of beauty to supplement the Spanish architecture of the building in providing an atmosphere of serenity for study. Competent teachers are found here always ready to help when aid is needed. Extra curricular activi- ties are offered to broaden our social, as well as civic, views. Students leaving here will long remember this building as a milestone along life ' s way. [ 5 ] Virlii Gives Aiitiim a Send Off The football season was opened on September 9th with Valpo playing Crown Point here. Tom Underiner took office as president of the Student Council on November 1 1 . Joanne Bauer was crowned queen of the Har- vest Hop. Joan Wehner, Phyllis Law- ler, Eva Lou Miller, Jean Bademan, Juanita Borg, and Mary Marshall were her attendants. K ft -L ' ' A j ?β–  - ' si ' m:% S 1 Vicki uilli Open Arms Greets Spring In the spring, thoughts turned to the Prom, Senior Day, bacca- laureate, and commencement. Phil Findling, Junior Class president, led the 1949 Prom line with Margaret Johnson. Second in line were Ken Dob- bins, Senior Class president, and Virginia Brown. Jack Thomas was master-of-cere- monies on Senior Day and Joyce Vietzke, Valedictorian, spoke on: Our task in Tomorrow ' s World, at Commencement. [f 4 Mrs. Fisher, Miss Hudson, Miss Sieb, Mr. Koch, Mrs. Foor, and Miss McGillicud- dy observed the Prom from the sidelines. Meanwhile, punch was served in an- other corner. Blue crepe paper and yellow butter- flies were the decorations for the event. The girls in the lower left corner were performing their version of Swannee at the Senior Day festivities. Below, Susan Nichols read the class will on the same occasion. Rex Bucher ' s and Jack Bailey ' s yodling along with Marian Ehrhardt ' s hill- billy version of Timtation, at the Senior Day festivities, were a far cry from the choir ' s Festival Finale and The Lost Chord, under the direction of Mrs. Mary Myers, at commencement. Upper left: Cloyd Walker followed by Marilyn Miller and Vernon Smith, received his diploma from Mr. Telle. Below: Gene Braun and Eu- gene Ransom marched in to the strains of Pomp and Circumstance. Here and There Upper left: A tense moment in the ball game. The coach has another man warming up. Upper right: A very funny picture. In G.A.A. cir- cles there is nothing funnier than initiation and this is initiation. Lower left: The south tower after a snow fall. Lower right: Yelling is their business. They do not just pretend, these yell leaders make a lot of noise which goes unnoticed by the referee. CLASSES After four years of hard study Vicki finds herself a graduating senior. Thinking back on her ex- periences, she wishes that she could begin all over. Alt of us have worked hard to reach the top and are pleased to find the struggle almost ended. Most of the students leaving as seniors take with them life-long friends, ambitious ideas, and immeasura- ble knowledge. Along with learning to play the various games, to tumble, and even to dance, she learned good sportsmanship, an essential for good living. They showed determination which kept them fighting till the sound of the gun. Midwa y in the season the Vikings were handicapped by a two-week suspension due to the outbreak of polio in the school. In the opening game Valpo again held their traditional rival, Crown Point, down to a scoreless tie. There was some fine running by our backs, especially through the line a fact which showed that the linemen were also on the job. This record was an improvement over last year. As in football the cagers opened the season by playing Crown Point, but our basketeers defeated them 34-26. The Vikes showed well against such teams as Michigan City, East Chicago Washington, and LaPorte even though they came out on the los- ing end. The Valpo Vikings beat the Chesterton Trojans, another rival, 49-40. The Vikes posted the highest score they have hit in the past five years when they defeated Whiting 63-52. After this feat they won only one out of the last six games of the season. BASKETBALL COACHES Coach Bob Dille and Assistant Coach Paul Miller showed to the fans, through long and rugged practice, that Valpo was no team to be sneezed at. These two men worked conscien- tiously with the boys everyday. The Valpo Vik- ings have continued to show improvement with these two at the helm. TOURNEYS When the sectional tournaments began, the Dillemen showed the smoothness they had most of the season by walking away with Liber- ty 47-15. In the second tangle Valpo took the honors by defeating Morgan 43-33. The same feat was accom- plished between Valpo and Kouts in Gary by a score of 44-42. But in the final game Valpo bowed to a superior Gary Froebel 58-37. B TEAM The second team, coached by Paul Miller, showed much enthusiasm. As far as their record goes, they came out on the short end. But these boys had what it took to make a good team. Their big handicap was their inability to hit consistently. The boys lacked a little height which most of their opponents had. These boys will undoubtedly make fine re- cruits for next year ' s varsity. Here is shown at right and bottom a few action shots taken when the Vikings defeated Tolleston of Gary. B-TEAM Standing: Mr. Miller, coach; M. Walsh, G. West, B. Johnson, J. Bigelow, G. Phillips, R. They finished up with six wins and four losses. They de- feated, Michigan City, Whiting, Chesterton, Por- tage, Tolleston, LaPorte, and Crown Point. The track team was a little stronger in the running events than they were in the field events. In the LaPorte relays, including LaPorte, Michigan City, Hobart, and Valpo, the Viking sprinters came in second, defeating Michi- gan City and a favored Hobart crew. At upper left is shown the finish of the half-mile run between Chuck Lembke and Moss of Hammond Tech. Dick Schroeder and Jim Dan- iels are holding the tape. In the 440 he set a track rec- ord of 52.0 seconds. He also set a new 440 Confer- ence Indoor record of 52 seconds flat at the Uni- versity of Chicago. This was the best indoor mark of the year in the state of Indiana. Also Warren qualified for the 440 in the regional along with Bob Bailey. Warren also qualified for the 440 in the state meet. Bob Bailey, Warren Able, Jack Bailey, and Don Hermance, at lower right, the track team ' s mile relay runners, set a new school and track rec- ord of 3:34. - ' fS . f CROSS COUNTRY The Cross Country team fin- ished up the season with a record of five wins and three losses. They were victorious over Chesterton, Emerson, Tol- leston, Hammond, Clark, and Froebel. Six meets were can- celed on account of polio. Re- turning to the team next year will be Charles Swynenberg, Robert Eigelsbach, Robert Gin- gerich, Robert Dolson, and Charles Brown with the addi- tion of Herman Tarnow, to make next year ' s team a tough one. Charles Schau and Ger- ald Krueger, also on the var- sity team, will graduate this year. Left is shown the start of a meet with Cheslerton GOLF The first five on the golf team last season were Bartholomew, Van Ness, Dorris, Sullivan, and Snyder. These boys had a fine record of six wins and three losses. In the sectional meet the Vikes placed seventh out of 16 schools participating. Joe Van Ness qualified for the state meet. He placed ninth out of about fifty boys. Returning to the squad this year were Har- ley Snyder, John Sullivan, Her- bert Douglas, Charles Kraft, Gene Sherman, and others. CHEERLEADERS The cheerleaders elected in 1949, Ruth Ehrisman, Carlo Kelso, Violet Kaufman, Laurel- len Butcher, and Daralee Black- man, did a fine job of boosting the team. In February of 1950, according to the new system of electing cheerleaders, two freshmen were elected to the group. Each following year two more freshmen will be added. G. A. . SENIOR GIRLS ' BASKETBALL TEAM Kneeling: E. West, P. Lawler, M Niequist, M. Weller, D. Giftos, D. Upton. Seated: J Scribner, C. Ma- yer, P. Hepner, D. Frazier. G. A. A. By far, the most popular sport in G.A.A. is basketball. Each year nearly 100 girls turn out for this winter sport. This year, under the leadership of Marilyn Niequist the senior girls emerged as champions by defeating the sophomores. Tumbling is the next sport after basketball season is over. In tumbling the girls show their ability to do such things as standing on their heads, and turning summersaults, etc. Marlene Dowd acted as chair- man. The sports program is set up according to seasons. In the fall, the first sport is speedball, usu- ally played outside on the field. Next comes volleyball. During the winter basketball and tum- bling take over. Come spring, track and softball make their appearance. These are the major sports. Among some of the minor sports that are held are tennis and archery during the spring. Bowling, the new- est sport, had its beginning this year. This started in the fall and lasted until early winter. 45 G. A. A. β€” JUNIORS AND SENIORS Top Row: F. Johnson, J. Meyer, D, Upton, P. Peters, V. Dalke, E Spratley, J. Dittman, E. Kuhrts, M. Dowd. Into this volume goes a complete record of the activities of the school year. Under the sponsorship of Mr. Roger Stewart, the yearbook staff, with each member in a different department, works to meet its various deadlines. To defray many Valenian expenses the senior class donates the profits from the sale of ice cream and candy at school and at games. The Journalism II Class, under Mrs. Em- ma R. Foor, comprises the Valpost staff, which does the writing and takes care of all details including the final mail- ing of the paper. The Hi-Y, under the direction of Mr. Ralph Schenck and Mr. Alfred Henkel, lends its efforts to many worth-while activities about our school. To accommodate those who want to buy or sell second-hand textbooks, the Hi-Y operates the used bookstore. To add to their treasury and also to serve the students, the boys tend the new pencil machine in the hall. To help the beginning freshmen become acquainted, the Hi-Y along with their feminine counterparts, the Y-Teens, sponsor the freshmen initiation party. An annual affair is the Hi-Y Best Girl Party to which the boys take their best. The year wouldn ' t be complete without the Father and Son Banquet where everyone becomes acquainted. The Hi-Y invites speakers to their meetings to give the boys views on many topics. Among these they have heard Mr. Dickey who told of the progress of the YMCA in our city. A foreign student from Valparaiso Uni- versity spoke on his native land, Latvia. [ 52 ] The Hi-Y attended the district Hi-Y meeting at Hammond and the dis- trict meeting at Chesterton where they led the main discussion on the Hi-Y and Its Community. Originally a boy became a member of the Hi-Y by accepting an invi- tation to join. After a change in the policy, it stands today that those re- questing membership are admitted. During the first period of membership, the boys are pledges. They are given three pledge instructions where they are required to learn the phases of their work. The Hi-Y is full of fun but it also has its ser ious side. The entire mem- bership attends church in a body several times each year. The organization is constantly growing and occupies a major position in the social, as well as, service activities of V.H.S. It is a service organization and carries out this aim in many creditable ways. At Thanksgiving the girls make up baskets of food and deliver them to deserving families of the community. Every year members volunteer to sell TB Seals at various places in our city. One of the chief func- tions of the Y-Teens is helping in the school kitchen. Every week a differ- ent crew of six girls serves the food and then washes the dishes. The Y-Teens invite various interesting speakers to their meetings. This year they have heard a student from Valparaiso University who spoke on her native land, Germany, and a local floral expert whose topic was flower arrangement and corsages. The Y-Teens also enter into the social side of V.H.S. At the beginning of the year the Y-Teens, in cooperation with the Hi-Y, sponsor the Fresh- man Initiation Party where the freshman learn that they can now take part in the fun at V.H.S. The highlight of the year for the Y-Teens is the Turn- About Trot where the girl takes over the boy ' s duties, first inviting and then [ 54 escorting him to and from the dance. As may be imagined, this dance pre- sents many interesting problems for the girls. This year the Y-Teens added to their social program by presenting a volleyball game between the faculty and members of the Senior Class, both boys and girls. The teams were both in costume, and a large crowd turned out to see the event. Although the Y-Teens charged no admission, a collection for the March of Dimes produced such a considerable sum that they received a certificate of commendation. The Boosters, by sitting and cheering together, have promoted mass enthusiasm and cheering for our teams. It ' s always the Boosters ' aim to en- courage team spirit and good sportsmanship. On the social side the Boost- ers start the football season with the Kick-Off Dance after the first game and several more informal dances throughout the year. f 56 Science Club Standing: Mr. Fisher, sponsor; Shirley Allen, Melville Weller, Sara Jane Brown, board members; James McGarvey, sergeant-at-arms; Thomas Oliver, vice-president; Phillip Find- ling, president, Phil Carichoff, secretary. Although V.H.S. offers as much of the sciences as any other high school, there are those who strive for more knowledge. For these there exists the Science Club, under Mr. Glen Fisher. There are scien- tific projects within the club, and it hopes to be able to send a club member with his project to the annual State meeting of the Junior Academy of Science. The club members go on local field trips to such places as the Valparaiso Technical Institute and the McGill Manufacturing Co. Once each year they take a field trip to Chicago. The teaching field is an important one; and the future teachers of V.H.S., in order to learn more of this work before entering it, last year organized a chapter of the Future Teachers of America. This chapter, under the direc- tion of Miss Audry Shauer, has been host to several of the teachers of V.H.S. in order to obtain from them as much information on the teaching profession as possible. The club ' s program includes a merit system based on points gained by helping V.H.S. teachers and by work- ing with the children of other schools. This year the chapter will send its senior members to the other schools of our city to observe the teaching meth- ods used in different age groups. [ 58 ] Dramatics Club For those would be Thespians, V.H.S. is fortunate in having a Drama- tics Club. Under the guidance and instruction of Mr. Burton L. Conkling, the group presents plays to the student body. As preliminary work the members studied make-up and now handle their own grease paint for each play. This year the club presented Circumstances Alter Cases, R inging in the Groom, and A Sign Unto You, plus the presentation to the public of The Importance of Being Ernest. As yet the club is more or less an honorary organization, consist- ing only of varsity letter winners. The athletes having won their letter in either football, basketball, cross-country, or track, are recommended for membership by the coaches, Mr. John Wiggins, Mr. Robert Dille, Mr. Paul Miller, and Mr. Kenneth Pifer, and then approved by Mr. King Telle, princi- pal. The purpose of such an organization is to provide recognition for good sportsmanship and top achievement in the field of athletics. Gymnastics Club This year something new was added to the list of activities of V.H.S. A group of athletic and ambitious boys went together, under the guidance of Mr. Kenneth Pifer, and formed the Gymnastics Club. This group specialized in tumbling work on the mats and the use of the spring board as a take off. The members do their practicing in the gym during the evenings. They have made only one public appearance which was at the end of the B game and between the halves of the varsity game when the Valpo Vikings played Lew Wallace of Gary. During the first performance the boys did various forms of the roll with little twists added here and there. The second per- formance was a staged wrestling match between four members of the club. Student Council The Student Council is an advisory body, each member being a student representative from a home room and rpresenting an average of thirty stu- dents. Council members take to their weekly Friday meetings the opinions and ideas of the students on various policies or activities of the school. The Student Council plans educational and enjoyable programs for the student body. Among these this year were a pair of champion tumblers with their trampoline, an artist on the saxophone, a man who specialized in leading group singing, and an expert on the use of the voice in speaking and sing- ing. The Student Council also plans the special dances of the year. This year the Council arranged the Harvest Hop which took the place of our an- nual Homecoming Dance. A Court of Beauties was the feature of the Hop. Other highlights of the year were the Valentine ' s Dance and the May Dance. This year with its new location in the shop building it has more space for members and more privacy for its work. The choir is always increasing its repertoire and presents musical programs for the resi- dents of our city as guests of the Elks, Rotary, and the Kiwanis Club, as well as, the annual public concerts. Along with the new room this year the choir has added to its equipment, new chairs, new risers for public ap- pearances, and a much needed music stand for its director. As is its custom, the choir sent many representatives to the Solo and Ensem- ble Contest at Crown Point, a number of whom received a first rating. OFFICERS Margaret Eigelsbach, vice-president; Elsie Squire, robe charmian; Mrs. Myers, director; John Beach, presi- dent; James McGarvey, treasurer; Thomas Oliver, sec- retary. Choir Every year during the Christmas season a group from the choir, who call themselves ihe Carolers, make a tour of the city singing carols. A barber- shop guartet was organized and the boys call themselves the Discords. T here are two girls ' ensembles, the Note-ables and the Chordettes. These groups entertain at various functions in our city. Those ensembles and soloists receiving first at Crown Point, journeyed to Indianapolis for the State Contest. Band starts onto the field. This is a common scene at all football games. The halftime program some- times consists of extravagant affairs featuring the different colored lights of the members on a darkened field and once during the season the band pre- sents a spectacular display of fireworks, but at all times this program repre- sents the conscientious efforts of every band member under the directorship of Mr. Harold Rogers. A student usually begins band work in grade school and works himself into a position in the high school band. If the student has no instrument, one may be rented from the band at a reasonable rate. This year the band joined the choir in presenting a field program at Ho- bart. As usual many members of the band entered the Solo and Ensemble Contest at Crown Point and came home with very commendable ratings. Those receiving first journeyed to Indianapolis for the state contest and earned top honors. Each year the entire band enters the state contest for bands and orchestras. The group plays a large part in the social life at V.H.S. by sponsoring and carrying out school dances. The band specializes in novel ideas and bits of fun at their dances. The receipts from such dances go into a fund which provides for new instruments, repairing of instruments, new uniforms, various trips taken by the band and many other things. [ 64 ] SHOP In New Surroundings Last summer a new build- ing was added to V.H.S. It is now completed and in use. Originally our shining addition was an old army barracks in Fort Wayne. Through the efforts of sev- eral faculty members and students the building was transported and now adds to our campus. Adequate space for class- es in metal working, wood working, art, and choir is thus provided. Top: The boys at work in the ma- chine shop Second Row: The wood- shop engrossed in their projects. Future Homeimil.ers of America The school ' s home economics department offers quite a com- plete course; still there were some girls who desired to obtain additional experience in this field. Accordingly, this group or- ganized, during the past year, a chapter of the Future Home- makers of America under the guidance of Miss Jean Eichacker. Although new, this club has received its charter and its activi ties are beginning. Through the efforts of a mem- ber, she may obtain de- grees of Junior Homemaker and higher. The club has sponsored one dance this year, the money from which will be added to its treasury, and will probably enter into the social field more as it grows older. The meetings are held during the class period once a week. The purpose of the club is to bring the Spanish speaking countries closer to the students by studying their customs and habis along with a little of their colorful and interesting history. This is done by student reports. The club played host to a V.U. student from Puerto Rico, who spoke on the differences between our countries. A very successful dance was sponsored, January 6, on El Dia de las Reyes Magas, a day of festivity and presents in South America. Each and everyone has proved his worth in our development. They often hold meet- ings to discuss the problems of the school and to determine what they can do to solve them. Even though Vicki looks a little despondent, we know that she appreciates all they are doing. G L JM [ 71 ] SUPERINTENDENT The duties of Superintendent of the Valparaiso city schools have been effi- ciently performed by Mr. G. Warren Phillips for the past six years. This year, having just witnessed the completion of a new high school unit, he is busily engaged in plans for an expansion of the grade school facili- ties. Mr. Phillips received his A.B. from DePauw University and his M.S. from Indiana University. PRINCIPAL Mr. King Telle, although he has been here for four years, is not gradu- ating with the 1950 senior class. This is for the best, as by staying he can help others to attain the same, well- rounded education that the seniors have. Mr. Telle received his A.B. from Hanover College and his M.S. from Indiana University. SECRETARIES Grace Rickard and Marilyn Lembke, secretaries to Mr. Phillips and Mr. Telle respectively, are both very efficient. Neatness, cheerfulness, politeness, and a willingness to help others are a few of the characteristics of these secre- taries. Grace Rickard has filled her position faithfully for many years, while Marilyn Lembke is a beginner in this field. Adams, Frieda: English, Spanish β€” Indiana University, A.B.
