We memorized our locker combinaTions The momenT we goT Them, and spenT long aTT- ernoons aTTer school learning The corridors oT NorTh. BuT we had a guidance counselor, Mrs. MaTThews, and our TirsT social advisor, Mrs. Gallagher, To help ploT our sTraTegy. Judy Eogel and Richie Shonberg danced Their way To TirsT place aT our aTTernoon social while we Tapered our sTraighT dun- garees and sTuTTed our TeeT inTo sweaT socks and Weeiuns To maTch our V-neck sweaTers. We Told our- selves To cool iT unTil The nexT Time around The board. EIGHTH GRADE: The dice were Tossed and we moved inTo a new year. We TlaunTed our new sophisTi- caTion and developed a whole new vocabulary To maTch iT. We were Tough and weak simulfaneously, and we swapped mugs on our new l.D. cards. Our dances were sTill aTTer school. Ellen OsTer and Jay PronT bugalooed Their way To TirsT prize in The dance conTesT. AT Palisades Park we wore TishneT sTock- ings, go-go boofs. and paisley shirTs, buT Judy GoTlieb was senT home because her skirT was Too mini. Back aT school, we TirsT TasTed whaT developed To be a sTeady dieT oT Dickens, Shakespeare. and Tor- mulas: as science expanded ,To a Tull year. Gene Vinik headed our grade adminisTraTion and PeTer Sayre began his TirsT oT a longline oT Treasury iobs. We were Too sure oT winning To miss our nexT Turn. NINTH GRADE: We were now Too hoT To sTop. Led by PresidenT Richie Shonberg, we braved Typing TesTs and exTemporaneous speeches by hiding beneaTh our growing hair. Wire-rimmed glasses s+ar+ed us oTT To bell-boTToms, clunky shoes, and TurTleneck shirTs, which we wore To endless hi-y Teas. ScoTT Luckow, PeTe Sayre, and Ellen OsTer composed The resT oT The council ThaT had inTroduced our TirsT male hisTorian, Larry Horn. lT was our Once in a LiTeTime chance and we grabbed iT - producing a whole new breed oT NorTh l-ligh Thespians. TENTI-l GRADE: We conTinued our winning sTreak in high school - TasTing The apple oT success wiTh our TloaT, Adam and Eve. The Tickle Tinger oT TaTe was poinTed aT Louise Cuccurullo, who crawled OTT wiTh Arnold and The besT-acTress award Tor our one-acT play. We welcomed Miss Pollack as our new social advisor and decided To sell iewelry To rescue The TalTering economy oT our grade. BuT we sTill Tound Time To concenTraTe on Bio. labs and Theorems as RegenTs became a sTaTe oT mind. SweeT Io parTies occupied our weekends. while we danced To The music oT Sly and The Family STone. We Tound we could dig anyThing as long as iT was ouT-a-siTe. ELEVENTH GRADE: By This Time around, we realized ThaT There were oTher spaces To land on. We elecTed Sal STanzione, Erannie Kean, Ed Kerzner, Joanne Alexander and Terry SignoreTTi To lead us in work on The candy sTand and TloaT. Mrs. DeLuca was sworn in as our Third, buT noT Tinal, social advisor. We looked Through a Glass Darkly aT Chem. minus sixes, 5 RegenTs, PSAT's, and SAT's as mulTiple4 guess TesTs. YeT. we Tound our heads were inTo new areas, and we moved on Trom WoodsTock summer. The school came TogeTher on The Peace Corps ProiecT To build a school in an underprivileged area. We organized a MoraTorium Day To geT our heads TogeTher abouT The war and share our views. WhaT began as a Tlag-pole proTesT, concerning an ambiguous cuTTing-suspension rule, expanded inTo an emo- Tional rap in The gym, and Tinally bursT inTo a walk-ouT. We cared abouT each oTher and we showed iT.
