Students acquire practical consumer in- formation and discuss methods of improving trafhc conditions. The Music Department of Valley Stream Central High School, headed by Mr. Fare, is one of the school's best means for furthering good relationships between the school and the community. Public performances of its bands, orchestras and choruses have long entertained Valley Stream citizens. The most important objective of the department is to help pupils gain aesthetic values in music and develop a lasting enjoyment of good music. The Art Department of Central High School, under the direction of Miss DuBois, enhances students' knowledge and appreciation of art and prepares them for a career in some field of art. The department offers courses in basic art, advertising design, textile design, costume design and, for those considering engineering, mechanical drawing. Home Economics s if lcjj f'-X ,pw Vmf in Mrs. Serey. The Home Economics courses, taught by Mrs. Serey, prepare the girl students for future family life. Through lessons in food preparation, child care, and personal grooming each girl gains the self-confidence necessary for a successful marriage and a happy future. Special Education Mr. Fortunato. Central High School's Special Education Depart- ment, solely but expertly manned by Mr. Fortunato, generously extends a helping hand and understanding heart to those of our students who, for various reasons, are troubled by special academic difficulties. Because of his sincere desire to help them, Mr. Fortunato is continually experimenting with new ideas and methods in his classroom. JT f F-v Mr. Young. Librarian One of the criteria of a good school is a first-rate library. Under the direction of Mr. Young the Central High School Library has met the increasing needs of the student bodyg at present the library has a circula- tion of over 10,000 books and a five-year file of ninety- three magazines. It provides reference material in all subjects and has a large collection of books for pleasure reading. Mr. Young enjoys his work, particularly since it enables him to become acquainted with most of the student body. LIFSE NJ X-f i ji., Mrs. Goldberg. Mrs. Goldberg, the school nurse, is responsible for treating cuts and bruises incurred in the Course Of the day, readmitting students after illness, keeping health records, administering hearing and vision tests, and helping the doctor with physical examinations. Her official title is nurse-teacher, for every visit provides the student with more knowledge about his mind and bodv.
