The Music Department of Valley Stream Central High School, headed by Mr. Fare, is one of the school's best means for furthering good relationships between the school and the community. Public performances of its bands, orchestras and choruses have long entertained Valley Stream citizens. The most important objective of the department is to help pupils gain aesthetic values in music and develop a lasting enjoyment of good music. The Art Department of Central High School, under the direction of Miss DuBois, enhances students' knowledge and appreciation of art and prepares them for a career in some field of art. The department offers courses in basic art, advertising design, textile design, costume design and, for those considering engineering, mechanical drawing. It is the desire of the Art Department to kindle a spark of art appreciation in each of us. 'H

The Physical Education Department, under the direction of Mr. Graham and Miss Sinkinson, teaches the skills of the various sports in gym classes-some with as many as 110 students- and supervises extra-curricular clubs and sports in which these skills may be practiced. New courses and clubs have been organized for the girls: Miss Matzumoto teaches ele- mentary judo and the art of self-defense, Mrs. Moffatt gives a course in modern dance, and an indoor archery club meets in the basement of Suprina's. Centralites thus have the oppor- tunity to build their bodies while learning skills in sports. Health Centralls Health Department, headed by Miss Green, teaches two very valuable courses. Health I is a course for seniors who have not taken the biology course. Health II is a required course in psychology. Students acquire practical consumer in- formation and discuss methods of improving trafhc conditions. Mr. Musselman, chairman of the department, says, If a stu- dent will make a full stop or maintain the speed limit when there is no law enforcement officer present, I feel the course ' been a successll' The Industrial Arts Department, under the direction of Mr Darling teaches trades to boys attending Central.
