Language The Foreign Language Department, adeptly guided by Miss Avery, helps to destroy barriers of ignorance and pre- judice and to aid in the construction of international bridges through the understanding of other tongues and cultures. French, German, Italian, Latin, and Spanish are offered. Russian is taught in the Adult Education program. One of the departrnent's fundamental aims is to enable students to become aware of and appreciate ideas and contributions different from their own. While production of well-informed tourists is not the principal goal, it is cer- tainly hoped that every foreign language student will even- tually have the opportunity to visit abroad. Representatives from Central attended the New York Herald Tribune Youth Forum and a mock political convention, held at North High School. Thus, firsthand experience enabled the stu- dent to apply theories learned in class and to develop 1 ,f ideas of his own.
