BOM J elf? vi V JV all QL' X History The History Department, under the direction of Miss Griffith, prepares students to be well-informed citizens by teaching them the fundamentals of our democratic sys- tem of government, our American heritage, and the history and present situation of the World. Representatives from Central attended the New York Herald Tribune Youth Forum and a mock political convention, held at North High School. Thus, firsthand experience enabled the stu- dent to apply theories learned in class and to develop 1 ,f ideas of his own. Mathematics Algebra, geometry, and trigonometry are some of the courses offered by the Mathematics Department of Central High School. Ably supervised by Miss Henry, the depart- ment provides a strong foundation in mathematics for those planning to attend college and for those anticipating an occupation requiring a knowledge of math. This year the two regular half-year courses, Solid Geometry and Ad- vanced Algebra, were replaced by a special experimental course in Twelfth Year Math. Included in this course is the study of symbolic logic and number systems to bases other than ten. Language The Foreign Language Department, adeptly guided by Miss Avery, helps to destroy barriers of ignorance and pre- judice and to aid in the construction of international bridges through the understanding of other tongues and cultures. French, German, Italian, Latin, and Spanish are offered. Russian is taught in the Adult Education program. One of the departrnent's fundamental aims is to enable students to become aware of and appreciate ideas and contributions different from their own. While production of well-informed tourists is not the principal goal, it is cer- tainly hoped that every foreign language student will even- tually have the opportunity to visit abroad. By fostering interest in, and respect for, our brothers around the globe, Central's Foreign Language Department is aiding a worthy and important cause, that of world peace and fellowship. -r ---- A-,...,,,,,M-I , Seated, left to right: Miss Weih, Miss Francescutti, Miss Avery, Mr Pompa.
