The senior representatives will be guests at the Civitan Luncheon in the spring. QUALIFICATIONS In any gr 0 up of people that work together, have comm on interests, and depend upon each othe r , the r e is a need for understanding. It s e em 5 to me that the extent to which aperson is able to possess and cultivate this human under- s ta n din g will determine more than any other 5 in g1 e f a c to r his quality of good citizenship. Are yo u able to see the other person's point of view? C a n yo u ge t along harmoniously with others? C an yo u congratulate another person when they have honestly excelled to greater heights th a n you have ? It is then that you have begun to show signs of growing up into a mature citizen. Self-p re se rvation is a basic part of our human nature, and yet this drive must be culti- vate d into a point of view that will enable us to control our selfishnes s . Basically we are selfish; and yet to be good citizens, we must become unselfish. Do you enjoy doing things of service for others? Are you tolerable of other peoples' ideas even though they differ from your own? An outstanding citizen must be able to discern between right andwrong. It seems to me that the mostimportant factor determining that is not the act itself, but the purpose of the act and the atti- tude which one has in regard to it. Attitudes and purposes are important fa c to r s to good citi- zenship, are yours proper? Some c itize n 5 ha ve strong attributes of leadership and othe r s are better at following. At different times we are each called upon to follow and to lead, and we should be able to do both well. Are you able to back your leaders? Do you e a r n the confidence that others place in you in your positions of leadership? There are manyqualifications of a good citi- zen; but in the final analysis, you must be a fine person with a proper sense of values in order to be of greatest service to other people. This is the real test of citizenship. L .
