Prinvipal 's ,Message TO THE SENIOR CLASS OF 1956 VALLEY SPRINGS HIGH SCHOOL. The faculty of Valley Springs High School has observed, with pride, your growth in all the fields of human endeav or ov e r the past four years. Y ou r progress a s a group and as an individual h a s been quite gratifying to the people that have been most interested in your success. One very outstanding characteristic of your group has been your ability to get along within your group and among other groups. lntimes when industry con- siders that the chief reason for failure is the in- ability to get along with people, this is an import- ant asset for you. Perhaps this characteristic of yours and other groups of your age, will grow to influence our National leadership in its efforts to get along harmoniously with other peoples. When we stop to consider by what criterion we s hall u s e , we find that it is impossible to measure the success of a person by such limited things a s the amount of money he accumulates, the power he builds up, or the ease with which he fools people. No, success is not a stagnate state of being which one reaches and then stopsg rather it is a pr oc e s s , an active process with varying d e g r e e s . Success, therefore, can be measured only in t e r m s of growth. It matters not in what field of human endeavor you are en- gaging, if you a r e growing in that field you are succeeding. When you stop growing you will stop succeeding. We hope that you will keep that in mind throughout your life of serv ice to man. Valley Springs School shall m i s s you in years to come, but we shall follow you with interest in your wider field of service, Sincerely, Principal.

611155 History It was fall, nineteen hundred and forty-four, there sat in the first grade rooms at Valley Springs, T ommy Ann Clontz, Betty Ledbetter, Ann Creasman, Beverly Price, Clark Lisenbee, Elaine Lance, JackStepp, ShannonCochrane, Roy Israel, Joan DuBose, Vickey Blythe, Ethel Kyle, Betty LouHollifield, Obie Moore, Maxine Tread- way, Leon Metcalf, Ann Weir, George Shipman, Edith Buckner , Bill Norteman, and Boyce Kanupp. As they grew in knowledge, they gr ew in num - ber when Charles Hogsed, Ola Thain, Robert Ball and Pat Campbell came in the third grade. Pat Campbell and Bill Norteman's stay was short, but Pat Hardie enlivened their vacancies in the fourth grade. ln the fifth grade Cordelia Higgins and Franklin Jones's quiet faces appeared for, were their looks deceiving.J Reading, 'riting, 'rithmetic continued on as Calvin Metcalf entered in the sixth, G. B. Gasperson brought Pat Campbell back with him in the seventh, and Gail Haney in the eighth. In the fall of 1952, fifty -nine freshmen enter- ed high school with their ambitions high and their dreams great. It was witha feeling of confidence and hope that we entered this new phase of our school life, never dreaming of the many pleas- ant events that were in store for us. It was tough, at first, but Elizabeth Tomberlin and JoanConner bestowed joy upon the freshmen with their appearance, as Bill Norteman crept in for good. The tenth grade b r ought Yvonne Kale and Norma Mid d 1 e t on , and we shall never forget world history. T-hen, inthe eleventh,we were as one, plan- ning and attending the banquet, ordering our rings, and watc hing our last upper class men leave. At last, we were seniors, our dreams had fl ou r i s h e d . We had the school paper, annual staff, electing superlatives, senior play, order- ing c alling cards, invitations, and finally, our caps and gowns. It is with sadne s s , and yet pleasure, we leave VSHS. We have fulfilled our ambitions and dreams, and take with us many, many pleasant memories. To any , we advise, school is short but oh, how sweet.
