R ight from the very start, we R eally tried to do our part. I mportant we knew we would be O nly if we could make the others see. R eady we are now to be S tudents of V.R. ever faithfully. -R oberla Friend -Doreen Bidwell -Carol Bonanomi PARENTS There are things we all have in common, such as colds, dandruff, dental appointments, and unfinished homework. There are, also, parents. Parents are usually packaged as two to a set. They come in all sizes and shapes, all moods and beliefs. They may be hard to understand at times, since they speak a language composed mostly of, When I was your age . . and I don't care what Mary jane is wearing, no daughter of mine . . They are, of course, prejudiced in your favor. You are really a pretty ordinary individual to every one else. At home, you are their main project, and what you do to shape your future is what truly matters to them. They don't make much sense: they want you to not only get an A in every subject, but to excel in at least three sports, be popular with the entire school, and win four scholarships. You are to do this, you understand, while learning to play the piano 6 or drums, or clarinetj in a very professional man- ner. At the same time, if female, you should be learn- ing to be a good cook and housekeeper. If male, you should learn responsibility by working part-time, or doing all chores around the place. This is their dream. Of course, this doesn't happen. You manage to pass, you almost make the team in soccer, and when you can't get out of it, you keep the lawn mowed. They have become confused in your mind, so that at times you feel they must have been around when the Civil War started, and it comes as a shock when the very latest hit record was a popular song while zlaey were in high school. They can't understand why it requires an hour to set your hair: fWhy, when I was your age, I still wore braids.7 Why do you have to have the car CI used to walk three miles to school every day! Q, or why do you object to their stories about you as a child. 1 But you were such a cute baby: always taking off your little dress and running out in the yard! J. They do understand, though, that you're their link with the future, and their contribution to it. What you do reflects their care and training-and wouldnk it be nice if we could all make them proud of their handiwork? As I said, we all have parents. I wonder if we all appreciate them? -Peggy Pearron THE WARRIORS The Warrior cry is victory, and once again were making history. The Freshman year will be great, and most girls hope for a date.
