This revolt was led by Lech Walesa, who was chosen ''Time magazine’s ''Mon of The year.” Also under dose worch was rhe political ond social unrest that continued in Iron, El Salvador, Nicaragua, ond rhe Middle East. Resistance of onorher nature rook place in rhe U.S. when rhe air traffic controller union PATCO called a national strike on August 3, 1981 President Reagan refused to give in to rhe strikers, ond he carried through wirh his threat to fire rhe strikers if they did nor return to work. Baseball players also held o 50 day walkout which began on June 12. The striking issues were salaries ond rhe free agent clause. After rhe baseball season was finally played rhe Dodgers won their first World Series in 16 years. The Dodgers certainly benefited from rhe pitching of Cy Young Award winner Fernando Volezula. Continuing in rhe world of sporrs, John McEnroe won rhe prestigous Wimbledon stopping Bjorn Borg from his 6rh consecutive win. McEnroe also won rhe U.S. Open, again defeating Borg. Sugar Roy Leonard defeated Thomas Hearnes in 14 rounds for rhe undisputed Welter Weight Champion of rhe World. For that he mode 11 million dollars. Women struck o major victory when Sandra Day O'Con- nor, age 51, on appellate judge from Phoenix, Arizona, wos nominated and approved as rhe first woman to sir on rhe U.S. Supreme Court. Kansas City’s new Hyorr Regency Hotel was rhe scene of rhe worst disaster in KC’s history. The second ond fourth floor were spanned by two wolkway bridges from which people could peer down at rhe lobby below. The highest walkway tore loose and fell down on rhe next cousing it to fall on rhe first floor which was crowded wirh 1,500 people who had come to attend rhe Tea Donee. Ill were killed and onorher 190 were injured. Death also rook rhe life of Enwar Sadat; Moshe Doyon; Jim Davis of Dallas fame; Natalie Wood; William Holden,- Omar Brodley, rhe last living 5 star general; Ella Grosso, rhe first woman elected U.S. governor in her own right; and fighter Joe E. SENIORS WIN FALL FIELD DAY ACTIVITIES 1. Kurt Stiles winning high jump. 2. Sophomores work hord on rug of wor. 3. Balloon bust where everyone hops. Foil Field Day was held on October 30,1981. The fun-filled day consisted of the following events: doss verses doss softball and football games 880 yard relay 440 relay shorpur softball throw high jump tug-of-war tricycle races balloon bust egg toss The overall day winners ployed the faculty in a Volleyball game. 4
