V.P. CENTENNIAL: 100 YEARS: A GOOD BEGINNING Ir came ro rhe attention of Dr. Cleory and the fall festival committee that rhe Valley Park School District has reached its 100th birthday. Ir was decided ro postpone rhe fall festival in order ro pur together a large centennial festival. Mrs. Doris Fridley, high school librarian, was named Centennial Chairper- son, a memorable centennial was held April 29 thru May 2 through rhe efforts of many district employees and citizens of Valley Park. Mrs. Jenna Grubb, secondary art teacher de- signed rhe logo and Sally Harrington, a sixth grader submitted rhe logo 100 Years in Valley Park Schools-A Good Beginning. The precise oge of rhe district is nor known due ro poor record keeping in early years The centennial celebration was doted from the 1882 land purchase for $35.00 from George Lyman for rhe construction of a school house. Education in Valley Park was confined ro grade one rhrough eight. Valley Park students who wanted ro attend high school had ro pay tuition ro either Kirkwood or Webster Groves. The present district location came ro being in 1932 with rhe construction of rhe high school building. The south wing was added in 1939. The Meramec building opened in 1951 for junior high students. In 1952 rhe shop building was constructed. In 1954, all elementary students moved into rhe new constructed Vance building. The big gym and music room were built in 1956. Additional classrooms and present cafeteria were added in 1968. For 3 days, students, present and past citizens participated in celebration activities.
