Board Of Education SUPERINTENDENT Dr. William Rebore has been employed in the Val- ley Park School System for eleven years. He has been both teacher and principal. It was in 1977 that he be- came Superintendent. Some of Dr. Rebore's tasks in- cluded making decisions, understanding current trends, and having personal vision. Along with the help of the Board of Education, he worked to regulate the activities of all the schools in the Valley Park School System. This past year Dr. Rebore and Dr. Cleary worked hard on the reorganiza- tion of the secondary school program. This entailed the rearrangement of faculty and class room assign- ments. Most of Dr. Rebore's work seemed to be be- hind the scenes, yet he performed work necessary for the smooth running of the Valley Park School District. Dr. William Rebore, Superintendent. 6 Principal Busy-that word aptly described Dr. John Cleary this year. The job of principal was a demanding one. The principal had to be an expert on administration and school policy. This past year proved to be even more demanding with the combination of the middle and high school to form Valley Park Secondary School. Dr. Cleary worked constantly to promote school spirit and student participation. He strived toward maintaining the academic atmosphere which was necessary for an interested and informed student body. Dr. Cleary was the person immediately responsible in all matters per- taining to the school. He was willing to help in any way he could to make the year a good and happy one. This year was a year filled with achieve- ments , activities and distinctions for the students. One of the many activities the students become involved with this year was the beginning of a new event, ' 'THE HARVEST FESTIVAL''. On the right there's Doug Moon the ' 'Galloping Gourment'', making money for Student Council. At the bottom left is Lucinda Campbell with the balloons that the clowns lost. And on the bottom right there's Bernice Jessen and Janet Craft dressed as clowns to sell balloons for the juniors. The Harvest Festival turned out to be a super money making event for several groups, not to mention a fantastic time had by each and every student, even the elementary too ! Each year the entire student body combines together to create spirit and enthusiasm for the basketball sea- son. This is the main purpose of our Spirit Week! Spirit Week is a full week of activities to get the 1 'spirit moving''. Activities range from wearing school colors to creating unusual outfits and even out- rageous hats that cover sometimes outrageous hairdos. The aim of the Student Council is to stimulate interest in sports events by having the students display it throughout the school during the week. Dressed up like clowns on Clown Day were Darla Boyd, Pat Wheeler and Ann Wheeler. Over 250 individuals wander in and out of class rooms each and every day, with some purpose while at Valley Park High School. Each student opened his mind to new ideas and goals while preparing for a spe- cific role in society. Responsibilities ranged from class assignments, organization projects, team accomplish- ments, to life goals in general. These seniors wouldn't pose for the camera. Three seniors who always had time to laugh! CLASS FAVORITES: Randy Fudge and Betty Jo Brown Having finally come to the end of the long trail the seniors clutched their final grade cards and raised their diplomas in tri- umph. It all seemed to be a fit- ting gesture to indicate the end of the long school career. Although some involved themselves thor- oughly in the festivities, others were noticeably silent. This som- ber mood reflected the mixed emotions of leaving friends and the security of V.P.H.S. and the realization that they must now prepare for a specific role in soci- ety. Because one cannot remain within the security of their youth indefinitely, the farewells are made, luck is wished and a new class of seniors step ahead to take their place. 29 tf iM (A. ? a This was a year that started out with anxiety and frustration for the junior class, but ended up proving to be a good and productive one. It became a profitable year as they worked the concessions at the home bas- ketball games, which followed a junior tradition. De- spite problems, obstacles and breaks with tradition, the juniors overcame them all to present the 1979 Prom for the graduating seniors. ' 'Misty April Mo- ments' ' proved to be just that for all those who were involved. With each project the juniors attempted and com- pleted they always had an eye toward the future ... toward the coming year as seniors. 32 Danny Adams Rosie Adams Kent Brignole Bob Bryant Lucinda Campbell Tammy Cantrell Gary Collins Steve Conner Kathy Courtney Mark Courtney Janet Craft Chris Cusack Monica Davis Mark Dillon Class Favorites: Denise Johnson G Allen Lawson Class Officers (L to R): Greg Monroe, Vice Pres; Donald Moore, Sgt. Both the Salutatorian and Vale- dictorian addressed the class of 1979. Dr. John Cleary, principal, presented awards and scholar- ships, and Dr. William Rebore, superintendent, gave the introductory remarks. After the Honor- able James Spainhower, Treasurer of the State of Missouri, delivered the Commencement address, the diplomas were awarded to the class of 1979. The evening ended with pride and enthusiasm as the new graduating class of Valley Park sang their Alma Mater. Afterwards the Benediction was given by Reverend Steven D. Bookout, Pas- tor of the First Assembly of God, and the Reces- sioni was played. These are the children of yesterday and the leaders of tomorrow. Farewell, and may success touch each of your lives. Although you have left, your memories will linger through the halls of Valley Park High. S3 Senior Trip 1979 On May 26, the seniors of 79 boarded the bus and headed toward their first stop. They visited Lookout Mountain in Tennessee. Lookout Mountain is the home of the steepest incline railway in the world. Admission was paid to Rock City Gardens on top of Lookout Mountain where one can see seven states, cross the suspension bridge, walk the Enchanted Trail and visit Lover's Leap. Upon arriving in Florida the seniors boarded a sight- seeing train and took a seven mile trip through America's oldest City, St. Augustine and visited the old Spanish fort of San Marco. They then stopped at Marine Studios in Florida before moving on to one of America's most popu- lar vacation spots, Daytona Beach, Florida. There they spent three days and nights enjoying swimming sunbath- ing , boating, fishing, and fun in the night. Once underway again the seniors went to Cypress Gar- dens, ' 'America's Tropical Wonderland.'' It was a land full of exotic flowers and aquamaids. Recreation, enter- tainment and relaxation was certain to be enjoyed by ev- eryone at Walt Disney World. It was a whole different world with many different rides, shows, and attractions to keep everyone happy. After leaving Florida the seniors spent one night in Georgia and one night in Tennessee before returning home. These hours of practice paid off in superb performances during the athle- tic season. Not only were these girls at all the basketball games, home and away, but they also cheered on'' the wrestling team. In victory or defeat the cheerleaders led the fans in enthusiastic, inspir- ing cheers. Thanks for a great season! This was the finale of the Eighth Graders' year and the beginning of a whole new experience called 1 'high school''. The evening began with the traditional ' 'Pomp and Circumstance'' and included several speakers. Reverend Robert Bull- ock, from the United Methodist Church, gave the in- vocation; following was Dr. William Rebore who in- troduced the program speakers. The main commence - ment address was presented by Mr. Omar Feeler, President of the Board of Education. The long awaited moment finally came when Dr. John Cleary presented the graduating class to the audi- ence and the diplomas were awarded. Excitement and joy filled the room as the ceremony came to an end with Reverend Bullock's benediction and the reces- sional done to the ' 'Triumphant March''. Take a minute to ponder, when your feeling kind of down. Search deep in the box, that you tucked away long, long ago. Open it up, stir it around, let your feelings show. Remember him reaching for the door, when he was a child, Running out to enjoy life, to the fields so wild. Trying to hold interest in something, that you knew wouldn't last. Eventually running to the back porch, pushing on through the past. Remember him when he started maturing, being so keen. He just couldn't wait, for that golden year of thirteen. Trying to grasp, what was going through his mind, What was in store for the future, would rememberence of you be kind. Remember him; in high school, the accomplishments he had, Recall when he would come home sometimes, his face so sad, You tried to cheer him up, a little gift here or there, Just to show your concern, just to show you care. Most of all remember, the day he wasn't there, Your life flashed in front of you, suddenly upon you came all this fear, You were concerned and hurt, why a life was taken this way, To you it was unfair, no matter what one would say, In conclusion, endure, someday somehow we'll learn, Death is upon us all, unfortunately for some it's an early turn, But we have to keep on living for those who have passed, because life has so much to give, Appreciate how long you are given, learn, love, and live.
