We are fortunate in being the first class in five years to graduate in a world without war. We go to make our way in the long heralded post-war era. We are thankful to our God who has given us a peace that many young men and women have never known: thankful for our beautiful country left unmolested by the warg thankful to the men who helped gain this peace: sorrowful for the ones who did not come back. But with this blessing of peace comes a great and inevitable responsibilitye- the responsibility of bringing our nation unscathed through the battle of peace. lt is up to us to prove to those men that their country and its people were worth it all, to prove that our future farmers, doctors, teachers and laborers will work to preserve that which they won. And always, while doing this, they will set the example in tolerance, democracy, and freedom for the rest of the recovering world. We possess the irreplaceable right to further our education, if we see fit. lt is not our lot to be taken from our first taste of manhood and be thrust onto some foreign field to defend our principles. Our future is a peaceful world, a world in which to build a better World. To the building of this world we dedicate our all. May we set our goals high: may we so enlist the help of God that we can be successful in doing what so many before us have failed to accomplish. May we never rest until we have reached the point where we can look eye to eye with the men who gave us this opportunity. Let us continue unchecked until we can be sure that this will be the last dedication of its kind. 2 Q'-, , '. . ,I . , .. . . .,'I .1 H, , , 'Li-U '. . '4 -1'1 x ,1 'fa2. Now, while we wait to leave behind us Memories that shall always bind us, Shall e'er remain, shall e'er remind us Ol days- Of hours- Oi years That have raced by present into past. O! how We hoped for them to last! In each heart a silent prayer That Time and Space would meekly dare To stop, and thus fulfill our deepest yearning- To stay these years, these times of learning. Ours was a vain and selfish hope, Not fair, not logical, not sound, not true, But very wanted. And we with matters worldly tried to cope, To broaden viewpoint, to widen scope, And the moon shone, and the sun through skies still blue Marched on undaunted, Until we found, with falling heart, The end. O, not the end of lite, or Time, But the end oi an era, a stage, The melancholy finis to an age Of joys, of happiness, of sublime Innocence, puberty, young manhood, Or young womanhood. Slowly, surely, the door had closed Upon us, And a stark, grim reality imposed Upon us, Our lines were said. Our roles were dead. And now we remember- We recall the first meeting held by our cast, To others, a mere repeating of the past- To us, it was the launching Of an escapade, The curtain raising of a new and yet old drama In which we played The leading parts. Recall how we traversed these learning marts With doubt, fear, Anxiety, near Frustration. And how we hastily took our cues With over-exactness, And expounded greatly, like all ingenues, Forgot the gift compactness While showing the director that we deserved our lines. Bring back the memories- Memories of when our play had run A while, and we bards had then begun To strut our part upon the stage, To show the world our keen and sage Demeanor. No longer in the novice class As time went by, it came to pass: We took our place as actors, then, And in keeping with the trade, We lived in awe. But even these times not stayed, And on, on marched the moon and stars Into the endless gap that holds All the yesterdays, and grimly bars Them from returning. Alas! we knew the time was nearer coming, And in our ears the deeply humming Voices. Voices of actors who had worn The costume with which we now adorn Ourselves: Warning, advising, telling, Caustic, informing, compelling. And still we closed our eyes and dreamed. Our cast without a part? It seemed Impossible! And yet we knew That it was true. We faced the final act with courage rare, And as the lines we had to bear Developed into pages, And pages into scenes, Deep, deep inside us rages The battle of the subdued thought, As it wrestles with our wishful thinking. And as all the formerly checked fury wrought By it envelopes us, We finally know our plight. At last the cruel reality l-las struck with such fatality To penetrate the fog that has surrounded usg And now our hopes grow disconsolate As they feel this dreary parapet- This tangible result of the fear that has hounded us Since first we learned our lines. Now we walk upon the stage With weary step, Dreading the final curtain, Fearing with a certain Unknown fear. Wondering what will follow in its wake, What the mocking playwright, Life, brings to take lts place. Playing our parts With nostalgic hearts That smile on, as many have smiled before us And yet- A certain joy is flowing in our soul, Throbbing, Faint, but still there. A happiness that takes in our whole Being, And gives a little savour To this life of bitter flavor. For we know, even though unable To relive these days, years, and hours As the reaper overpowers Them, Deep within, where we hold what we cherish These days we are leaving shall never perish TOMMY HUDSON S VVUQXS . The present membership includes Loretta Gentry, President, Lois Chism, Secretary, Alois Rane, llistoriany Lillian Korthaao, Stella Troll, loAnn Bader, Dolly Morris, Evelyn Knott, Ann Larkin, Hose Streble, Lora Powers, Minnie Lee Kina, lane Parks, Ernestine McPherson, Erskine Redden, Mary Ann Schmidt, Albert Able. Sponsor, Mrs, lulia R. Fahey. The quality of the teachinq staff is the most important factor in the quality of education that a school system makes possible. Lack ot buildinas, books and other aids to learnina will, of vourse, handicap the best teacher. But even the best of buildings, books and other helps will not remove the permanent handicap that the ineffective teacher carries. The recruitment and selection of excellent teachers and the settinq up oi conditions of employment that make it possible for teachers to do the best work of which they are capable are primary aims in school administration. A. McDowell, March 6, Wormy Mary entered the thoughts of the student body. For those who were absent, and to other Marys, we'll try to explain the story. Mary was a worm, who liked to go dancing and go out every night with all the wormy boys in the neighborhood. She would never get her homework or listen to anything her wormy mother told her. She knew it all tshe thoughtl. Her brothers and sisters always obeyed their mother's wishes, and didn't have dates the nights they had work to do. Mother Worm pleaded with Wormy Mary to do better, or things would turn out for the worse for her, but to no avail. One night Wormy Mary was out on a date and returned home very late. The lights were still on and she couldn't figure out why. To her amazement, when she walked in the door, she saw her mother and brothers and sisters spinning a strange thing around them. Mother Worm told Wormy Mary they were spinning a cocoon, and it was time for her to give up her gay Wormy life and spin her cocoon, so she, too, will have beautiful Wings. Mary said in her Wormy way, that she wasn't going to shut herself up in a dark hole-any Way she had a date the next night and couldn't break it. Mother Worm felt bad about the situation, and prayed for things to come out. All that winter, Wormy Mary had a bad time, her mother wasn't there to cook and do things for her, and she didn't know how to adjust herself to that kind of life. When spring came, Wormy Mary witnessed a strange sight. Her mother and brothers and sisters had turned into beautiful butterflies, with bright colorful wings. Mary began to cry, for she, too, wanted beautiful wings, but this was impossible because she had not obeyed the wishes of her mother, or spun her cocoon, in her earlier life. Therefore, Wormy Mary continues to worm her way through life as you will do if you don't spin your cocoon when you are young.-Evelyn Davis. Reproduced from Valley Campus News WORDS TO CLASS HYMN Tune, Fin1andicz Comes time to part from our dear Alma Mater We say goodbye to memories fond and true It grieves our hearts to say goodbye to Valley The joys we shared and friendships we knew lt grieves our hearts to say goodbye to Valley lt's hard to break the bonds held with you. O' guide our class and help us not to falter When torn by life's immortal stormy sea We thank thee, God, for our four years of friendships May they hold true thru all eternity O let our hearts and minds grow with each day Give joy and shed thy light thru all the way.
