Seventy-four excited and confused students roamed through the halls, trying to look nonchalant, but only succeeded in looking bewildered. It took us time to get used to the school and the ac¬ tivities, but soon the clubs and classes were under way. We chose the following as our class officers: Tommy Keyser, president; Karen Burns, vice-president; and Dotty Dean, secretary-treasurer. Kathy Gram was chosen as our homecoming queen candidate, while Mts. Ruth Dalton and Mr. Lester Frank were our eighth-grade sponsors. The big day came on April 10, when we were initiated by the seniors and entertained at Dotty Lou Dean Howard Albert George, Jr. Kathleen Yvonne Gram John Michael Hill 11 Darrell Lee Hiner John Griffin Hudson Glenda Darlene Jenkins Loretta Carole Johnson the Sadie Hawkins dance that night. At the beginning of our freshman year, we elected these class officers: President, Tommy Keyser; Vice-President, Joyce McElwee; and Secre¬ tary-Treasurer, Dotty Dean. Kathy Gram and JoAnn Brinkley were elec¬ ted as freshmen cheerleaders. Joyce McElwee was chosen to represent us in the homecoming queen contest, and Dallas May won the baseball trophy for having the highest batting average of the year. Kathy Gram and Jimmy Trimble were chosen as class favorites, and Miss Jean Lowry and Mrs. Joan Mackey were our class sponsors. As sophomores, we elected the following class leaders: Jimmy Trim- David Lohr Kershner John Bedford Kershner Edna Margo Keyser 12 Thomas Mason Keyser Michael Allen Lester ble, president; Keswick Phillips, vice-president; and Glenda Jenkins, secretary-treasurer. JoAnn Brinkley was our football queen candidate, and Miss Jean Lowry and Mr. Charles Folsom were our sophomore sponsors. Our junior year began under the leadership of David Kershner, presi¬ dent; Dotty Dean, vice-president; and Glenda Jenkins, secretary-treas¬ urer. Mr. Richard Edwards, Mr. Charles Folsom, and Mr. Leslie King served as junior sponsors. Joyce McElwee was our football queen can¬ didate, and Joe Swadley won second place for Boys’ Prose Reading at the State Forensic Meet. JoAnn Brinkley and Joyce McElwee repre¬ sented Valley at Virginia Girls’ State. Michael David Martin John Ervin Lockridge L’Vont Smitherman Madison Dallas Walker May 13 Rodney Charles Miano Margaret Anntheresa McCollum James Arnold McComb Joyce Lynn McElwee John Hudson was the delegate to Boys’ State. On April 22, we entertained the seniors with a prom entitled “April Love.” The arrival of our class rings presented an exciting moment, and we presented the first “Little Miss Bath County” contest. David Kershner and Kathy Gram were chosen as class favorites. Senior officers were David Kerslmer, president; Dotty Dean, vice-president; and Glenda Jenkins, secretary-treasurer. Dotty Dean, the senior football candidate, was selected homecoming queen. The seniors sponsored the Holiday Dance, a boys’ fashion show, and presented the second “Little Miss Bath County” pageant. Joe Swadley won first place for Prose Reading in the District O Forensic Meet. On April 6, the Ray Jay Ryder Welford Basil McElwee Keswick Darrel Phillips 14 Richard Dale Ryder John Harper Shaffier, Jr. Tommy Colman Stewart juniors entertained the seniors at a banquet and prom held at the Homestead entitled “Some Enchanted Evening.” Thirty-one seniors enjoyed the trip to New York on April 24-28. Queen Karen Burns and King Basil McElwee reigned over May Day festivities on May 2. Graduation came on June 3, 1968. The Twelfth Year We didn’t think we’d make it, But here we are at last; Waiting to get our diplomas And thinking of things gone past. Our classes are over; our books are closed, And now our future we face. We have the knowledge to meet our needs And to walk in a steady pace. As we walk the halls of our school We think of the memorable years, Of the contests, losses, and victories; Of all our laughter and tears. Now that we won’t be walking these halls, We find we’re not eager to leave, We’re ready to take what the future will give; And endeavor in what we believe. Think of the many remarkable times: The ones we’ve had in school, So much fun is to be remembered And knowledge was the simple tool. So to the students that yet remain, Keep up the spirit; it’s not too late, Because these halls will never hear again The class of ’68. — Glenda Jenkins 16 s (Jem or Superfatii ives MOST STUDIOUS-Dotty Dean John Hudson BEST ATHLETES-Joyce McElwee and Janies McComb BEST LOOKING-Carole Johnson and John Kershner I MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED-Glen- BEST DANCERS-Margaret McCollum da Jenkins and Joe Swadley and Sammy Anderson BEST DRESSED-Edna Keyser and David Stinespring QUIETEST-Joyce Martin and Tommy Stewart BEST SPORTS LaDonna Bussard and Johnny Lockridge BEST ALL AROUND-LaDonna Bus- sard and Dallas May loin da ancf d)oua dead Gfass Jimmie Adkins Drucilla Allen Stephen Allen David Altizer Dewey Brinkley Judy Bonner Donna Bussard Linda Buzzard Mary Bird Ruth Bird Shirley Cardwell Donnie Carpenter Eugene Carpenter Doris Cauley Douglas Combs Patricia Copley Peggy Green Robert Green Dusty Hill Nelson Long Charlotte Johnson Patricia Judy Martha Keyes Barbara Keyser 18 Luyncfa a is 2 ueen Linda Lester Gwendolyn May Hazel May Keith McElwee Glenn McMullen Robert Merchant Lynda Neff Ronald Neff Frankie Rexrode Linda Rexrode Davis Rodgers Patricia Rucker Karen Saunders Sharon Sharp Jeannette Shifflett Elwood Smith William Smith John Strasser David Thomas Sandra Turner 19 IP- Donna ancf DD enn CTlre Cj ass T ' ano rites CLASS OFFICERS CLASS FAVORITES Ruth Bird, Secretary-Treasurer; Linda Lester, President; Doug Combs, Vice-President.
