1977 VALL-EE-HI Co-Editors Lee Ann Knickerbocker - Debbie Combs Assistant Co-Editors Joni Hook - Lisa Roberts Debbie Combs Lee Ann Knickerbocker As officers of the 1977 Vall-ee-hi, we would like to present this yearbook to the students of Valley High School. We have spent many hours on the book—taking pictures, making the dummie, cutting and pasting pictures, typing, proofreading, etc. We are sure that in years to come this book will mean a great deal to you—not necessarily in monetary value—but in fond memories of your high school days. Hope you enjoy your 1977 Vall-ee-hi. CO-EDITORS: Debbie Combs Lee Ann Knickerbocker ASSISTANT CO-EDITORS: Joni Hook Lisa Roberts Joni Hook Lisa Roberts Working hard, girls???? Left To Right: Pat Hohenbery, Brad Mason, Brandt Bensema, Dale Blout, Bruce Fisher, Brian Fisher, Boyd Evans, Colby Rude, Robert Knott, Duane Jones, Dean Howd, Clint Walker, Mike Brown. Kneeling: Brad Burkhead, Manager, and Coach Rick Phillips. Dedication More School Spirit was present in the halls of Valley during 1976-77 than has been displayed since the move to the new school. One of the reasons for this display is the Valley basketball team and their coach, Mr. Rick Phil- lips. A seasons record of 15-11, 3rd place in the Roseville Tourney and 1 position in the Fulton County Tourney (first time in ten years) shows the outstanding performance of these boys and their coach. We realize this feat was due to many long hours of practice and determination by the boys and the coach. The yearbook staff would like to dedicate the 1977 Vall-ee-hi to the 1977 basketball team and Coach Phillips. Thanks for a great year. Along with a new class, new teachers, and friendships, we were presented a new school. Among the sounds of workmen applying the finishing touches to our new school, the students made their way through the building to their class- es, and soon learned the routine of high school. The first of many class meetings was held with their sponsors—Mrs. Joy Roberts and Mr. Frank Willis. Freshmen class officers were chosen: Chuck Harn, president; Dawn Thompson, vice-president; Tim Negley, secretary-treasurer; Brad Thurman, S. C. Representative. Homecoming time approached and plans were made using the theme Valley's Victory Song. Representing die class of '77 were Jodie Tilghman and Fred McKown. 1974- 1975--The class of '77 opened its sophomore year with a class meeting and the election of new officers: Boyd Evans, president; JoAnn Ray, vice- president; Tammy Fisher, secretary-treasurer; Tim Negley, S. C. Representative. The theme Sailing To ... was chosen for Homecoming and a car was decorated accordingly. Rita Tice and Tim Dol- lar were chosen as sophomore attendants. March 25, 1975, was a memorable day in our high school days—the day that class rings were ordered. Our sophomore year closed as we awaited the arrival of our rings in the fall. 1975- 1976—Our junior year was a very busy one. Throughout the year we sold candy and carried out the tradition of a junior concession stand in order to present the seniors a fantastic banquet and prom. Prom was held at the Sheraton Inn, Galesburg, on Saturday, May 22, with Prelude To A Beginning featured as the theme. Gene Halsey and Sharon Her- bert received the grand honors of king and queen of Prom. Leading our class through the junior year were: Leigh Omer, president; Kathy Courtney, vice-pre- sident; Brenda McMahon, secretary; Bill Buck, trea- surer, Boyd Evans, S. C. Representative. 1976-1977—As the fall of 1976 arrived, the class of 77 began the final year at good ol' Valley High. Seniors at last! The year started by the election of class officers: Brandt Bensema, president; Darrell Burkhead, vice-president; Valerie Smith, treasurer, Jalene Norris, secretary; Jim Nelson, S. C. Repre- sentative. Homecoming Royalty were chosen with Kathy Courtney and Jim Nelson receiving the ho- nors of senior attendants, while Chuck Harn and Dawn Thompson were crowned king and queen. Our royalty represented us at the Homecoming game and dance, with the theme of The Viking Revolution. SAR and DAR award winners were Kathy Courtney and Chuck Ham. Lee Ann Knickerbocker received the General Mills Family Living Award. On May 28, 1977, the Junior-Senior Prom was held aboard the Julia Belle Swain, as it cruised down the Illinois River, using the theme of Stairway to Heaven. After the banquet everyone boogied to the music of The Changing Thymes. Following the Grand March King Brandt Bensema and Queen Mary Gurley were crowned as royalty of the Prom. The class chose to graduate with the motto of Know- ledge comes, but wisdom lingers. White caps and gowns with orange and black medallions were deci- ded upon along with red roses as the class flower. Baccalaureate was held on May 29, 1977, and gra- duation on June 3, 1977. Speeches at graduation were given by Valedictorian Bob Burnside and Salu- tatorians, Kathy Courtney and Brenda McMahon. Now, as we look back upon our high school years we find memories that will be with us always. In 1977, the Valley varsity basketball team brought home the 1st place Fulton County trophy, a prized possession, and we, the class of 1977, were the first class to complete all four years of high school in our new building. We would like to give a very special thanks to our sponsors, whose help we greatly app- reciated. Without their help our high school years might not have been so successful. Thank you, Mrs. Joy Roberts and Mr. Frank Willis, for all you have done for our class. 6 Seniors Top Ten Bob Burnside, Chuck Harn, Rita Tice, Leigh Omer, Kathy Courtney, Jim Nelson, Blair Doyle, Norma Boyce, Brenda McMahon, JoAnn Ray. It seemed that everyone was pleased with their pur- chase and the class settled down to a busy year. On the agenda for the first meeting was the election of officers—Joni Hook, president; Mike Brown, vice-president; Susie Robinson, secretary, Pam Larimore, treasurer; Carl Negley, student council representative; and Jill Schisler, chairman of projects. Joni Hook and Matt Glaser were selected as Homecoming attendants. As part of Homecoming activities the class decorated a car and entered the hall decorating contest. The fund-raising project for the junior year was the con- cession stand. All die eager and not so eager students spent at least one basketball or football game behind the food stand trying to raise enough money to finance the prom held in May. In the spring, things started shaping up and prom became the main topic of all class meetings. For a change of pace, it was decided that the prom would be held on the Julia Belle Swain. Stairway to Heaven was selected as the theme and The Changing Thymes to provide music for the evening. The after prom party was held at the Pekin Bowling Alley. On June 3, school was dismissed and the juniors went home to enjoy the summer before the final year at V. H. Sophomores In the fall of 1976 Rhonda Brashear, former class president, brought the first meeting of the sophomore class to or- der and asked for nominations for new class officers. The following students were chosen to lead the sophomore class: Kim Mason, president; JoAnne Simac, vice-president; Delane Thurman, secretary; David Newton, treasurer; Norma Negley, student council representative. The first project of the year was Homecoming. Chosen as attendants to represent the class were Kim Mason and Randy Guppy. Committees were also selected for decorating a car, a homecoming skit, and decorating the hall (which we were proud that our hall decorations placed second in the contest). Selling brass name plates was the financial project for the year in which the class did quite well. Finally—the high point of the year—ordering the class rings which will be received in the fall of '77. Class off- icers chose two different styles and it was decided that students could order either style. The class of '79 eagerly looks forward to two more fun-filled exciting years at Valley High School. 34 Sophomores Brad Burkhead Gail Cameron Mary Cook Laurie Davis Craig Cecil 35 Cindy Harr Rhonda Hall Terry Hilton Ted Little Sophomores 36 Donna May Holly Mitchell Sophomores 37 Donna Shumaker Jo Anne Simae June Simpson Brenda Stuckey Coy Suydam Delane Thurman Judi Tilghman Joy Tinder Dodi Walker Pam Walker Justin Whipple Brenda Williams Bruce White i 3« Left To Right: Miss Julie Leffelman, Kim Kempster, Scott Her- ron, Brian Fore, Laura Evans, Mr. Milo Hansen. Freshmen The most enthusiastic group of easily spotted freshmen came romping in the school build- ing of Valley High School on August 28, 1976. The first class meeting could have been described as mass pandemonium, but finally the election of class officers got underway with the guidance of the sponsors, Miss Julie Leffelman and Mr. Milo Hanson. The class selected Scott Herron, president; Brian Fore, vice-president; Laura Evans, secretary-treas- urer; and Kim Kempster, student council representative. It was soon brought to our attention that the freshmen class was flat broke. So the class joined forces with the yearbook staff to sell magazines. The sales boosted our treasury and our class spirit. Homecoming arrived quickly and we were very proud of our attendants—Kay DeCourcey and Greg Nelson. What fun was had decorating the car for our attendants and making plans to make the commons area a festive place for homecoming week. We feel we had a good start during our freshmen year and look forward with enthusiasm to the years to come. 39 Jim Anderson Kathi Blout Jimmy Butler Paul Branch Mike Cameron Andy Burkiett Randy Burkiett Shawn Cannon Freshmen 40 Kamie Davis Kay DeCourcey Rusty Dowell Ronnie Dobbs Alana Doyle Herb Dollar Mark Doubet Brett Dunblazier Freshmen Brad Elliott Vanessa Eshelman Laura Evans Brent Fisher Brad Fisher Brian Fore Kenny Frew Patty Goodin 41 Scott Heikes Paula Helle Dana Howd Alan Gurley Jim Hand Ann Hohenberry Freshmen Larry Jones Steve Jones Linda Keefauver Rod Kelso Kim Kempster Chris Kuehn 42 A Becky Matteson Steve McKown Laura Melvin Beth Munson Greg Nelson Freshmen 43 Allison Simae Laura Smith Ronald Smith Shelley Smith Jolyn Swain Freshmen FACULTY Faculty WARREN BAXTER Mathematics DENNIS DEVINO Guidance, Coach PEGGY CARLILE Social Studies DONNA GRGURICH Home Economics MILO HANSEN Science 46 Faculty CHARLES HARN Vocational Agriculture EUGENE KEITHLEY Industrial Arts CAROLYN HEIKES English, Latin LEE KLOTZ English, Speech MARVIN KLUSMAN Science 49 Faculty JULIE LEFFELMAN Art SUSAN KJLUSMAN DORMA LINDSTROM English, French Vocal Music GARY LITTLE Business Education, Coach JOHN MALONE Driver Training, Athletic Director SO Faculty TERRI MEDUS Physical Education, Health DUANE MCCLUSKY English, Coach RUTH NELSON Biology, Chemistry DIXIE MOSLEY Special Education RICK PHILLIPS Mathematics, Coach KATHERINE JO POTTER LRC Director 51 JOY ROBERTS Business Education ROGER SCHISLER Physical Education CAROL SMITH Physical Education DAVID WARD Physical Education, History, Coach Faculty WILMER WILLIS Mathematics, Physics FRANK WILLIS Instrumental Music Seated: Margaret Flynn.
