1973 VALL-EE-HI VALLEY SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL FAIR VIEW, ILLINOIS LINDA WOLFORD, EDITOR PAT KNICKERBOCKER, ASSISTANT EDITOR Ded icat ion — VALLEY SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL SAFE IN THE HALLOWED QUIETS OF THE PAST—LOWELL Quiet reigns supreme! The building stands vacant, but the memories remain. Busy hallways, the hum of study halls, bursts of laughter from the classrooms, up the steps—down the steps, and excited shouts from the gym are but a few of the memories that will forever have a place in its nostalgic past. The senior class of 1973 marked the end of a long line of students who passed through its portals. Although new school facilities will be available in the fall of 1973, somehow it will never be quite the same. The time-honored traditions related to the old building played an important part in the lives of many people who are now alumni. Valley High was their school—their pride! The Vall-ee-hi Staff would like to dedicate the 1973 yearbook as a symbolic farewell to the past and with great expectations toward the future. 2 iet Reigns . BOARD OF EDUCATION SEATED: Alfred Morey, Clarence Barker, Robert Pumfrey. STANDING: Waldo Ray, Ercil Little Mike Schulthes, Wayne Mahr. NOT SHOW: Daryl Johnson. A DMINISTRA TION RICHARD ADAIR Principal ERCIL LITTLE Superintendent BERTA LOU WOLFORD Secretary Seniors ROW ONE: Steve Halsey, Mike Ehens, Angela O'Brien, Mrs. Chenoweth. ROW TWO: Monty Thompson, Mr. Little. In the fall of 1970 65 scared sophomores entered the doors of Valley Senior High School for the first time and ready for the adventures ahead. Under the guidance of the sponsors, Mrs. Edith Wilcoxen and Mr. Gary Little, the class officers were elected at the first meeting. The officers were: president, Brian Glaser; vice-president, Bob Weber; secretary, Angela O'Brien; treasurer, Linda Watkins; and S. C. representative, Jane Roselle. As tradition would have it, the sophomores went through initiation which was planned by the seniors. What a time, but the opportun- ity would come to plan an initiation in '73. Late fall and plans were made for the Homecoming festivities. Bob Weber and LuAnn Archdale were selected to ride in the decorated car using the theme, Traces of Victory. Events settled into a routine and soon it was time for the last class meeting as sophomores. At that meeting class rings were ordered to be delivered in the fall. In the fall of 1971 the class again walked through the doors of Valley Senior High School--not as scared sophomores but as jolly juniors. Class officers were selected with Brian Glaser as president; Danny Donaldson, vice-president; Angela O'Brien, secretary; Jane Roselle, treasurer, and Monty Thompson, S. C. representative. The sponsors for the junior year were Mrs. Anna Chenoweth and Mr. Gary Little. Class rings soon arrive--some students soon lost their rings while others decided to keep their own. To represent the juniors for Homecoming, Debbi Melvin and Randy Way were chosen to ride in the car decorated in the theme, Color Our World With A Viking Victory. Earning a huge amount of money to finance the Junior-Senior Prom kept the class members busy all year. After much work, planning, and preparation came the highlight of the year—Junior-Senior Prom. The Prom was held on April 8 at the Sheraton Inn in Galesburg using the theme, We've Only Just Begun. The theme proved true as the juniors staged a first! An allnight Prom. After the evening at Sheraton Inn the group traveled to Northgate Lanes where the night was spent bowling, playing pool, dancing, and winning prizes. At 5:00 a.m., a sleepy group emerged from Northgate with a wealth of memories of the 1972 occasion. For the climax of the junior year, a bus was chartered to Chicago where such places as the Museum of Science and Industry, O'Hara Airport and Old Town were visited. On August 24, 1972, the sophisticated seniors walked proudly through the doors of Valley Senior High School. This was the last time a senior class would enter the old high school building. The first class meeting of the year was brought to order by President Steve Halsey. Other officers for the senior year were Mike Ehens, vice-president; Angela O'Brien, secretary; Debbi Dowell, treasurer; and Monty Thompson, S. C. representative. Thoughts soon turned to Homecoming and the last football season. Riding in the decorated senior car were senior attendants, Donna Gooding and John Courson. Seniors Angela O'Brien and Monty Thompson reigned as Queen and King over the Homecoming celebration. On April 28 the juniors entertained the seniors at the Junior-Senior Prom, Precious and Few, which was held at the Holiday Inn and later at Northgate for the all-night party. LuAnn Archdale and Danny Donaldson were chosen as Queen and King of the affair. The last event that the seniors will attend as a class at Valley will be graduation. The class chose dark blue and light blue as its colors, white rose for the flower and To- morrow Is Ours as the class motto. Members of the class won many awards—Cynthia Herbert and Brian Glaser were selected GRA and SAR winners; Brian Glaser and Margie Meyer were named Valedictorian and Salutatorian for 1973. May brought to a close the three years spent at Valley High. The class of '73 will not have a building to return to for a visit, but they will have many fond memories to recall. 6 7 JOHN COURSON Seniors DANNY DONALDSON BECKY COX ROBERTA DOUBET DENNIS DONALDSON VICKI CREMER 8 MIKE EHENS DEBBIE DOWELL JIM ELLIOTT Seniors DONNA GOODING 9 STEVE HALSEY CYNTHIA HERBERT SCOT HULET JESSIE JOHNSON CONNIE HAMM Seniors JEANNIE HARR 10 Seniors DIRK LEFLER STEVE McCORMICK 11 DAVID MARVEL DEAN OVERCASH Seniors 13 Seniors JEFF STUCKEL RADINE STUCKY MONTY THOMPSON 14 Seniors LINDA WATKINS VICKI WHITE 15 BECKY WOODALL JERI YOUNG HOMECOMING ROYALTY—Angela O'Brien Monty Thompson STUDENT COUNCIL PRESIDENT—Bill Pruett VALEDICTORIAN—Brian Glaser SALUTATORLAN—Margie Meyer BETTY CROCKER AWARD—Radine Stucky SAR AWARD—Brian Glaser DAR AWARD—Cynthia Herbert SENIOR CLASS PRESIDENT—Steve Halsey JUNIOR-SENIOR PROM ROYALTY--LuAnn Archdale Dan Donaldson G.A.A. ROW TWO: Mrs. Klusman, Sponsor; Diana Tice, Treasurer. ROW THREE: Conrad Cattron, S. C. Represen- tative; Mr. Ward, Sponsor. It all began on that fatal day when school resumed in the fall of 1972. Sixty students, now upperclassmen, united for their second year of glorious education at Valley High School. Our class president, Darrel Burnett, tried to call our first class meeting to order. After many courageous attempts Mr. Ward, a class sponsor, finally subdued the deafening roar. Kelvin Sampson, class secretary, could be seen (but only if looked for) trying though unsuccessfully, to take down everything that was happening. Through the year our poor junior class endured many tortures, placed upon us by sponsors, Mrs. Susan Klusman and Mr. David Ward. Although we realized these hardships were quite necessary (because of the threat of a Prom in the gym with a few strands of crepe paper for a ceiling and peanuts on the floor ), we dreaded the thoughts of selling candy bars, jerseys, running the junior stand at noon, and working in the stand during football games and track meets. As Homecoming time neared, we juniors took time off from our busy schedule to select our Homecoming attend- ants, Margie Suydam and Chuck Courson. With much ado we decorated our Homecoming car with the theme, Happiness Is . . . Somewhere Over the Goal Post. The sands of time quickly slipped through the hourglass and the Prom was upon us. Our trusty treasurers, Nancy Kidwell and Diana Tice, informed us of our monetary situation which was sounder than the Chase-Mahattan's. Our theme for the Prom held on April 28 was Precious and Few. With Prom over, our year was coming to an end. Our finale was the Chicago trip on May 5 via a chartered bus. We are all looking forward to our senior year at our brand new Valley. 24 ' ni Debbie Bartlett Denise Evans Sue Goedeke Gregg Powers Oscar Riley Kelvin Sampson Roberta Sherman Cheryl Riney Darynn Romine Mark Shultz Diane Simkins Juniors Diana Tice Darlene Tourtillott Marvin Tracey Don Ulm Twila Van Hoose Bill Ward Linda West Mike White Juniors Keith Williams Margie Williams Sandi Wilson LEFT TO RIGHT: Mr. Willis, Sheryl Uhland, John Deushane, Merl Mark- ley, Vicki Morey, Jayne Chaterton, Mrs. Wilcoxen. Sophomores In the fall of '72, sixty timid sophomores entered the halls of Valley High School. Known as the new pride and joy of Valley, the class held the first class meeting on September 5. With the assistance of the class sponsors, Mrs. Edith Wilcoxen and Mr. Wilmer Willis, the following officexs were elected: President........... Vice-President . . . Secretary........... Treasurer........... S. C. Representative . John Deushane Merl Markley . Sheryl Uhland Jayne Chatterton . Vicki Morey Just when the routine of school was going smoothly, the seniors announced sophomore initiation. Members of the sophomore class were assigned bizarre costumes and were made to perform stunts for the loving seniors. Then came the terrifying experience in the afternoon. Uhg! Blah! As the worst day of the year was over, plans were made for the Homecoming float using the theme, Happiness is ... A Viking Victory. Becky Markley and John Deushane were chosen as the sophomore attendants. The school year was filled with many surprises and adventures which will be cherished as happy memories. The class of '75 is now looking forward to the junior year, the moving to new Valley halls, and a chance to acquire new memories. 30 Rusty Craver James Davis Richard Davis John Deushane 31 Cliff Elliott Ray Embree Kevin Endres Sophomores Barry Fisher Rodney Fleisher Gerald Hilton Bob Howell Donald Harr Christy Lindstrom Nancy Lockwood Steven Malone Becky Markley Sophomores Kevin Mitchell Vicki Morey Dale Munson Luann Overton Debbie Pippitt Peggy Riley Joy Roberts Carol Rutherford Candy Scott Terry Smith Rose Steveson Brian Stubbs Janet Tracey Sophom Mark Trone Tina Shewell Sheryl Uhland Bill Vohland Diana Walter Chris Wood Chris Young Melinda Zinn ores Hi, Bootie! Latin Club Latin Club has been involved in many activities during the 1972-73 school year. To raise money for the club, car washes were sponsored in Maquon, Fairview, and London Mills, Candy sales were held at the Scenic Drive and the all-school play. The Saturnalia Celebration, a Romanstyle Christmas, was in December. The Latin Week activi- ties included a Quote Contest, Badge Day, Toga Day, Slave Auction, and the Latin Newspaper. The highlight of the year, the Roman Banquet, complete with bus ride, prepared speeches, and door prizes was held at V. Junction in Peoria this year. The club chose a candidate, Margie Suydam, to attend the Illinois Latin Conference at the U. of I. for the summer. LATIN CLUB OFFICERS President - Brian Glaser V. French Club Le Circle Francais began the year with something new—a back-to-school dance, partly paid for by the Crazy Legs Contest. Bob Weber ran down his competition to win the prize, a can of de-hairer. In November Barbara Steveson, Becky Markley, Rosie Steveson, Linda West, and Linda Wolford swore oaths and ate escargots as initiates after a month of Bonjouring and warding off black marks. For Noel Linda Wolford hosted a slumber party considered a success since Mrs. Klusman spilled water all over a table and since no one slept much. Four basketball concessions later the club had earned $300, enough for an authentic French meal at the Champs Elysees in Chicago, March 31. Though Denise Adair's snail exploded in her eye and our well-done steaks mortified the waiter, the mousse au choclat and fraises au vin made the meal all worthwhile. It was the ride home that left us wondering! Finally, the club sold candy at the track meet to help send Rosie Steveson to French camp in Wyoming and to give our seniors a fond au revoir at the installation of officers, May 10. SEATED: B.
