1972 VALL-EE-HI VALLEY SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL FAIRVIEW, ILLINOIS Claudia Overcash, Editor Linda Wolford, Assistant Editor Mr. Frank Willis Each year the yearbook is dedicated to one deserving of this honor. The person chosen for the 1972 Vall- ee-hi dedication is a man who, in his own quiet way, touches the life of each student in the Valley school district. A man of talent and artistic skill, his years at Valley have been spent developing the talents of others. He willingly shares his time and energy with his students even during after-school hours. With a combination of kindness, good humor, and respect for others, he teaches more than his art. A gentleman, respected and admired by those in his field, he earns our respect and admiration as well. We dedicate the 1972 Vall-ee-hi yearbook to our Director of Instrumental Music, Mr. Frank Willis. 2 ADMINISTRATION SEATED: Clarence Barker, Alfrey Morey, Robert Pumfrey. STANDINC: Daryl Johnson, Michael Schul- thes, Ercil Little, Charles Schleich, Waldo Ray, Jr. BOARD OF EDUCATION The Board of Education consists of seven men from the district of the Spoon River Valley Schools. These dedicated men meet bimonthly with the superintendent to form school policies. The diligent efforts of the board members, past and present, to provide the best in education has been culminated in the successful passage of a bond issue which will provide for the construction of a K through 12 building to be located at the junction of Route 116 and 97. Our thanks goes to these gentlemen who willingly devote long hours and much effort for the students and faculty of the unit. Their work is a great responsibility which we sometimes fail to realize. 4 UNIT OFFICE Ercil Little, Superintendent. Berta Lou Wolford, Secretary. HIGH SCHOOL OFFICE Richard Adair, Principal. SOPHOMORES We poor, underprivileged sophomores entered Valley High in the fall of 1971 as innocent fresh- men who were, for the most part, a bit frighten of the thought of high school life. As a class the first thing was the election of the class officers. They were: President.................................................Diane Simkins Vice-President...........................................Darrel Burnett Secretary-Treasurer.......................................Diana Tice To help guide the class through the year at Valley Senior High were the class sponsors, Mrs. Susan Klusman and David Ward. Initiation took place on September 7 and the naive sophomores were taught the true meaning of humiliation. Taking part in the homecoming festivities, the sophomores decorated a float with a purple pirate and used the theme, Color the Pirates Purple with Rage. Pat Haugen and Chuck Courson were chosen as sophomore attendants for the homecoming royalty. Although this has been a busy and enlightening year for the sophomore class, more work and fun- filled times are anticipated in the junior and senior years at Valley Senior High. 46 Kenneth Bennett Nancy Courtney Bobby Buck Karin Davis Darrel Burnett Denise Evans Denise Adair Charles Courson SOPHOMORES it j ■ Cathy Gray Barbara Hilton Danny Gray Vicki Hulet Sue Goedeke Nels Hickman Andy Gurley Patricia Haugen Pam Johnson Debbie Jones Tom Knox Jody Kovachevich Michael Lefler Debbie Linger SOPHOMORES Dixie Link Mark Livingston Norman Lock Curtis Mahr Karen Matteson Sheila Melvin Mike Miller Tom Morse Mike McKown Nancy Negley Karen Powell SOPHOMORES Diane Simkins Mark Shultz Vicki Steveson Marjorie Suydam Tim Terpening Don Ulm Twila Van Hoose SOPHOMORES William Ward Nancy Watkins v SEATED: Mr. G. JUNIORS In the fall of 1971, last year sophomores, now proud juniors, walked through the doors of Valley Senior High to start a new and exciting year. From the very beginning, we found it would be a busy year. To improve our financial status, we started working very hard at the concession stand, selling candy bars, having bake sales and hog raf- fles. In time money was earned to sponsor the Junior-Senior Prom and the trip to Chicago in the spring. For Homecoming Debbi Melvin and Randy Way were chosen to ride in the decorated junior class car using the theme, Color Our World With a Viking Victory. After much planning and preparation came the highlight of our junior year_Junior- Senior Prom on April 8 at the Sheraton Inn in Galesbuig. Following the prom theme, We've Only Just Begun was right—for after the banquet and dancing we had just be- gun. The juniors staged another Valley first—an all-night prom. From Sheraton Inn we were escorted to Northgate Lanes where the night was spent bowling, playing pool, dancing, winning prizes, etc. The next morning a sleepy-eyed group emerged from Northgate with a wealth of memories of the 1972 prom. The climax of our junior year came with the annual class trip to Chicago on a chartered bus to see such sights as Museum of Science and Industry and John Hancock Building. EUGENE KEITHLEY, MRS. CAROLYN HEIKES. SENIORS What can we say about a school building? That in it we came to learn everything we know? The whole sordid af- fair began on a hot, fateful day in August, 1969. Fifty-six inexperienced sophomores tripped up the steps into the dark, lurid halls of Valley High School not knowing what would be lurching around the corner. Prior to this time, we all had the illusions of grandeur as to what high school would be like. Then we were subjected to a bizarre tri- bal custom known as initiation. That first year we elected Kenny Davis, president; Carolyn Taylor, secretary; Kevin Kennelly, treasurer; and John Austin, student council representative. Mr. Eugene Keithley and Mrs. Mary Kennelly were assigned as our class sponsors. One of our many glamorous social events was Homecoming. Claudia Overcash and Kevin Kennelly were the sophomore attendants to the Homecoming King and Queen. They rode atop our sophomore car with the theme of Victory Is Our Goal. That spring we broke with tradition and or- dered stone settings in our class rings. Thus ended our first year at V. H. S. Resigned to the inevitable fate, we again entered the crowded halls of Valley in the fall of 1970. We traded in our old rundown officers for new vigorous leadership. They were John Austin, president; Patty Gurley, secretary; Steve Foshay, treasurer; and Kenny Davis, student council representative. Faithful to our tradition, we again had the best Homecoming car. Rick Widger and Sandi White were our attendants riding on the junior car with the theme of A Time For Us. And indeed it was for we won the WILCO conference that year. Due to our dedication, team- work, and cooperation, we amassed great sums of money by selling candy bars and working in the junior stand for both football and track seasons. With a portion of our haid-eamed money we sponsored an all-school dance. Of course, most of our money went to finance the Junior-Senior Prom held at Holiday Inn in Galesburg. Our theme was Bridge Over Troubled Waters. Seniors Ardith Reed and Curtis Sherman were chosen Queen and King of the prom. After that enchanted night, things seemed to drag until May 27-when we juniors set out on our class trip, another highlight in our high school days. Who could forget leaving at six o'clock in the morning on a chartered bus, getting lost in the Museum of Science and Industry, and seeing if Valley High could be located from atop the Hancock Building. After this mind-expanding trip; we, now worldly juniors, returned to our humble little school in time for the school year to end. This was a year of laughter, hard work, and many memories for all of us, but we now looked eagerly toward the future and our last year at Valley. Once again in 1971, and for the last time we entered the halls of learning. Hoping to make this last year as pain- less as possible, we quickly got into the swing of things. At the class meeting, officers elected were Steve Burk- head, president; Teresa Barker, secretary; Lou Ann Ehens, treasurer; and Joan Van Liew, student council represen- tative. Mrs. Carolyn Heikes became our new class sponsor with Mr. Keithley. Suddenly Homecoming was upon us with Carolyn Taylor and Dave Way reigning as Queen and King. Senior attendants were Sandi White and Greg Shultz riding in the senior car entitled In Pursuit of Happiness. DAR and SAR recipients this year were Debbie Ham and John Austin. It was our privilege to be entertained by the juniors at prom. It took place at the Sheraton Inn with the theme We've Only Just Begun. John Austin and Joan Van Liew were chosen as King and Queen. After the banquet and dance were over, everyone took off on a wild goose chase looking for Northgate Lanes, where we were to have an all-night bowling party. After discovering it there, where it had always been, we went in and spent the night bowling, playing pool, or just running around. The last big event at Valley is graduation. The class of '72 chose purple and gold as their colors, the yellow rose for their flower, and Dare to be Different as their class motto. Valedictorian was Kenny Davis and salutatorian was John Austin. Even though our three years at Valley are over, we will always remember the teachers that helped us, the friends that we made and all the good times that went along with our education.
