The things we consider in choosing this person are; number of years at Valley, outstanding service, and friendliness towards the students. With her understanding of young people, she has succeeded in helping the students with any problem, large or small. As a teacher her enthusiasm and interest have helped students to gain an insight into the areas of music appreciation. The Vall-Ee-Hi of 1966 is proudly dedicated to our vocal music director, Mrs. Dorma Lindstrom. 4 compliments of FAIRVIEW VILLAGE BOARD, fairview FRANK METALKA, President London Mills PAUL PLATT, Vice Pres. COMPLIMENTS OP RAPATEE GRAIN, INC., RAPATEE 13 SHIRLEY TACKETT Secretary to Mr. Little AND CUSTODIAN VERONA NOTT and GENEVA V1NCAMP Valley's Cooks Class Officers Seated: Mrs. Rasmussen, Bill Downing, Mr. Bennett Standing: Irene Kuggles, Elaine Stairwalt, Don Voorhees, Debbie Day One day late in August of 1963, our class of sixty-four eager but uncertain students entered Valley in their new role as sopho- mores. After acquiring a sense of belonging, we had to undergo both sophomore initiation and those of various organizations. At our first class meeting, we met our sponsors, Mrs. Sarah Rasmussen and Hendry Bennett. We elected the following as our class offi- cers: Kyle Kennelly, president; Leanne Grice, vice-president; Carol Sherman, secretary- treasurer; Bill Downing, student council representative. As the Homecoming activi- ties approached, Irene Ruggles and Jim Melton were elected as queen and king at- tendants. Everything is Coming up Roses was the sophomore car theme. As the year progressed, we, full-pledged members of Valley, attended many school activities. One of these activities was our sophomore party held April 7, 1964, to get better acquainted with our fellow classmates. When our sophomore year drew to a close, we eagerly looked forward to being upper- classmen. Our junior year opened with Lyle Schuman presiding as president; Jim Melton, vice-president; Jane Timmons, secretary; Elaine Stiarwalt, treasurer; and Erma Ulm, student council representative. For our Homecoming float, our theme was When You Wish Upon a Star with Jackie Timmons and Kyle Kennelly as the attendants. After a seemingly long wait, we received our class rings with the usual exchange of rings follow- ing. In November we proudly presented our junior class play entitled Room and Bored . After a hard year's work in the junior stand, we were able to finance our junior-senior banguet and prom entitled In Camelot . One 16 of the many highlights of the decorations was a fish pond filled with goldfish and coins. After careful planning and diligent work, our efforts were rewarded as we danced to the music of Billy Hill and his orchestra. We ended our year with the annual junior class trip to Chicago. After a long, but enjoyable day, we arrived home recalling the numerous sites and unforgettable experiences of our excursion. In the fall of 1965, the doors of Valley were embarked by the senior class of 1966. Our new slate of officers were Bill Downing, president; Elaine Stiarwalt, vice-president; Debbie Day, secretary; Don Voorhees, treas- urer; and Irene Ruggles, student council rep- resentative. While we decorated our float Some Enchanted Evening for the queen and king attendants, Jackie Timmons and Bill Downing, the Student Council decorated the Golden Knight for Gloria Timmons and Vincent Knox, our Homecoming Queen and King. Besides sponsoring our annual Christ- mas dance, we were also engaged in many other activities. In January we selected D.A.R. and S.A.R. winners — Leanne Grice and Kyle Kennelly, respectively. Our thoughts then turned to graduation. We selected blue and white as our class colors, a white carnation tipped with blue as our flower and our motto Zeal Without Knowledge is Fire Without Light. Too soon, we will be marching down the aisle for Baccalaureate on May 29. On June 1 1966, we proudly and happily receive our diplomas. We have great anticipation for our lives in the future, but we cannot help looking back to our life here at Valley. We owe a special word of thanks to Mrs. Rasmussen and Mr. Bennett, our class sponsors, who made our life here easier. After finding her crystal ball under a stack of Batman comic books, she dusted it off and prepared for action. We tape recorded her dialogue and this is what she said. . . I see Rip Van Cook, better known as Harlan Cook, lying under a tree and telling puns in his sleep. Would you believe, corny puns? In the city below the hill where Harlan sleeps (and sleeps. . .and sleeps) a show is being performed by the famous Barkvard Ballet Team” starring Mike Barker and Janice Bevard. Behind the scenes, I see their choreographers, Jackie and Jane Timmons. My crystal ball is going black! Is a disaster going to occur? No, I see it now. It's black smoke coming from the window of a Home Ec. room. Coming from a discotheque across the street, I hear the hit record Cymbals A-Go-Go which sold a million copies, all made and bought by Richard Bhear. The officers elected for this year were: Rick Bowen, president; Brian Kennelly, vice-president; Margaret Sampson, secretary; Janet Shortness, treasurer; Mike Thurman, stu- dent council representative. Mr. Keithley and Mrs. Kennelly, our class sponsors, have guided the class through the year. For the Homecoming dance and parade, Rick Bowen and Margaret Sampson, were chosen to attend the king and queen. They rode on a float entitled Deep Purple. On December 17, the juniors presented the play, Our Town. Much time and hard work were put into this play which was di- rected by Mrs. Pickering. After many weeks of impatient waiting, the long-awaited class rings arrived just before Christmas. We wore them with much pride. During noon hours, dances, and foot- ball games, many hours were spent working in the junior stand to make money to finance the Junior-Senior Prom and Banquet. Much reparation was put into planning the Junior- enior Prom, the highlight of the year, which was held April 30. The annual class trip to Chicago con- cluded our junior year, we are now looking forward to our last year at Valley as seniors. 46 visit JACK AND BILL'S CELLAR, canton Sharon Allen Alice Anderson Therea Bale Linda Beckett Mike Beoletto Rick Bowen Debbie Brashear Burton Cecil Terry Chappel Phil Conlon Vicki Cook Jean Davis Robert Feger Kenny Fleisher David Fontenoy (no picture) Henrietta Gray Sandra Gray Susan Ham Albert Hartstirn Melinda Hartstirn Randy Hurst Kendall Irons Marsha Johnson Brian Kennelly Kathy Kidwell Bennie Knox Mary Land on Sally Leffingwell Marsha Lefler Danny Link Linda Ludwig Laura Markley Robert Marvel Charles McMahon Merrill Melton Mary Anne Mitchell Richard Mitchell Sandra Moody Allen Morse Charles Myers Jim Neville Rita O'Brien Linda Overton Robert Phipps Roger Rask Freddie Rench Kathy Roselle Margaret Sampson Jackie Schoneman Linda Schuman Richard Sharpshair Janet Shortness Dixie Simons Tony Smith Micheal Stufflebean Jim Suydam Michael Thurman Marcia Tlezzi Ronnie Ulm Larry Wilson Susan Wooddell Sharon Yocum Rick Young Sophomore Officers: ROW ONE: Mr. Messmore, SPONSOR, Armyn Daley, Mrs. Gray, SPONSOR. Vall-ee-hi Staff The Vall-ee-hi staff sincerely hopes you will enjoy your yearbook as much as we have enjoyed preparing it for you. At the first of the year, the officers and our advisor, Mrs. Walker, met to decide upon such things as cover, grain, design and dedication. Our yearbook is financed mainly through advertisements sold to the surrounding com- munities and also from the sale of plastic covers which are sold in the spring to pro- tect our yearbooks. After the group pictures were taken in January, many nights after school and on weekends were spent cutting, pasting, typing, and proofreading the layout sheets. When the dummy copy was completed, we sent it to the publishers, eagerly awaiting to see the arrival of our yearbooks in the spring. The yearbook staff and Mrs. Walker proudly present the 1966 Vall-ee-hi to you in hopes that you will remember all of your good times and dear friends at Valley Sen- ior High School. 61 ROW ONE: Mrs. Walker, advisor, Susan Ham, Debbie Brashear, Connie Parli, Jane Timmons, Nola Conger, Irene Ruggles. Few students realize how much work is required to put out just one issue of the Voice. The ad- vanced typing class is responsible for the typing and putting together of the paper. After each edition of the Voice is printed, copies are sold to Valley students and others are sent to subscribers, board members, surrounding schools, and also to alumni of Valley Senior High who are serv- ing in the armed forces. 62 LIBRARY STAFF Joyce Buckman, Debbie Day, Nola Conger, Sandra Moody, Sally Leffingwell, Laura Markley. We based the title on the national goal of Individuality Counts. Through our theme we learned to stress the importance of each individual's development, not only in school but in community and home life. Our most rewarding dare of the year was to go caroling at Galesburg Research Hospital and present the patients with gifts of cookies and candy. The chapter received a high rating in Section 12 for their Public Relations and Honor Chapter projects. The fifty-three girls who are members of the Girls' Athletic Association have ful- filled their purpose of promoting athletics and good sportsmanship throughout their year’s activities. During the summer, the G.A.A. members invited the freshman girls to a picnic and swimming party. They also sent four cheerleaders to a one-week camp in Bloomington. When the new school year began the girls hiked and played baseball after school. Later in the year, the girls bowled to earn extra points. In October, the G.A.A. co- sponsored a weiner roast with the Letter- men. For Homecoming, the girls decorated a float with ''Wheeling in a Victory” as their theme. In November the new members were initiated into the organization at a candle- light ceremony which was followed by a Sadie Hawkins dance co-sponsored by the Letter- men. Eight girls also participated in the an- nual playday at Richwoods. In February, the girls were busy decorating the gym for the G.A.A. Carnival, with ’’See the U.S.A. with G.A.A. as the theme.
