We began to feel a part of Valley in the weeks that followed as we joined the various organizations and met our upperclassmen. We led happy lives until the day arrived that all sophomores dread--Initiation Day. In spite of our fears, we surmounted our first hurdle with only a little strain. As we were initiated into the various organizations, we finally became a part of Valley. At our first class meeting we met our sponsors, Mrs. Edith Wilcoxen and Mr. Wilmer Willis. Also, at the first meeting we elected our officers--Jerrv Woodall, president; John Shortness, vice-president; Janet Rask, secretary; Roger Wright, treasurer; and Andy Foshay, student council represen- tative. We chose as our attendants for the Homecoming King and Queen. Linda Bowles and Jim Frame. We all anticipated Homecoming eagerly as we prepared our float with the theme, My Blue Heaven”. As the year progressed we helped cheer the Vikings to victory on the football field and basketball court with the aid of our sophomore cheerleaders--Pat Porch, Nancy Brown, and Linda Bowles. In November we held a party to help us get to know one another better. We all remember that night--complete with square dances, broom dances, and an impromptu limbo session. In the spring, we took a small part in the Prom as attend- ants from our class were chosen. They were: Jerry Woodall, Roger Simkins, John Shortness, Bill Parli, Phil Kennelly, Janet Rask, Ardith Owens, Jonie Hartstirn, Nancy Brown, and Judy Archdale. Also during the spring, as we awaited our junior year, we chose new officers. They were: Bill Parli, president; Andy Foshay, vice-president; Marilyn Schuman, secretary; Susan Donaldson, treasurer; and Phil Kennelly, student council representative. In the fall of 1963 we entered the halls of Valley with our new junior-classmen status, and gleams in our eyes as we plotted our part of the initiation for the incoming sophomores. The new underclassmen, however, survived their ordeal, and we turned our thoughts to Homecoming. We elected Marilyn Schuman and Bill Parli Homecoming Ring and Queen atten- dants. During half-time of the Homecoming game. Bill and Marilyn rode the junior class car decorated to the theme of Hand Your Heart from a Star”. On November fifteenth our Junior class proudly presented hours of work, fun, and worry in the form of our play entitled WHEN A BODY MEETS A BODY. Two weeks later after an eternity of impatient waiting, our class rings arrived. With their arrival came cries of joy, moans of disappointment if they didn't fit, and the inevitable exchange of rings. Also during the winter of our junior year, some of us partici- pated in the operetta THE MERRY WIDOW, presented by the music department. All through our junior year we worked diligently to make enough money to finance our Banquet and Prom. After much excited anticipation, careful planning, and hectic decorating; the Junior-Senior Prom was held on April 24, 1964, with the gym decorated to look like an April in Paris”. We all spent an evening we will never forget as we danced to the music of Ozzie Osborne and his orchestra. Eight days after the Prom, sixty-nine juniors got up in the wee hours of the morning to go to Chicago for one fun-filled day. None of us w ill ever forget the tours through the museums, shopping in Marshal Field's, losing people in the subway, and seeing the Chicago shore line in the moonlight from the boat on Lake Michigan. Even as we arrived in Galesburg early the next morning, we began to realize our responsibility as seniors and the leaders of Valley students. At our last class meeting we chose our class officers for the next year. IJiey were: Roger Simkins, president; Mike Porch, vice president; Mary I indstrom, secretary; Jim Lafary, treasurer; and Janet Rask, student council representative On August 27, 1964, we entered the doors of Valley for the last time as a class on the first day of school. Our thoughts immediately turned to Homecoming, since many of the senior boys practiced for their last high school football season. W hile we decorated the senior car to the theme of South Pacific” for our attendants Pat Porch and Dave Donaldson, the Student Council made ready a float for our Homecoming King and Queen, Janet Rask and Jerry Woodall. The year progressed quickly as we enjoyed every minute of our last year at Valley, and soon it was time to prepare for the Christmas Dance. We decorated a tree and made a fireplace so that the gym would be full of the feeling and spirit of Christmas as we came and danced that night to the music of Russell Dietriech. Soon afterwards we chose our SAR and DAR winners, John Shortness and Susan Donaldson respec- tively. All too quickly our last year at Valley passed before us, until it was time to choose our class colors, rose and silver; our class flower, the rose; and our class motto, ' Knowledge is Power . Finally, the graduation proceedings began as wre attended Senior Night May 14, Baccalaureate May 23, and Commencement Exercises on May 28. We would like to thank our sponsors, Mrs. Wilcoxen and Mr. Willis, for three happy productive years at Valley. PROPHECY Schleich University River spoon, England August 14, 1985 Dear Mrs. Wilcoxen and Mr. Willis; Having lost contact with his fellow graduates of Valley Senior High School, the illustrious Dr. Jack Schleich, founder of Schleich University, appointed out committee to make a thorough study of the present occupations and interests of our class of 1965. We thought you, too, might like an account of our findings. We looked in the yellow pages of the phone book for a taxi; and, to our surprise, found the Brown Cab Company listed. It was then that we remembered reading of Nancy Brown's inherit- ing the company from her distant relative, a mister Yellow. When the cab came to a screeching halt, we were alarmed to find Jim Lafary behind the wheel. After a hair-raising ride, we were relieved to board the airliner - until we learned that Loopy Overcash was piloting; however, it was too late to jump, for the stewardess, Aura Llm, had already closed the door and ordered us to fasten our seat belts. We asked about her training. She told us that before her attendance at Carol Huff's Transportation Preparation Education Corporation, she had been the private secretary of Gary Marvel, business relations manager 39 of Jerry Woodall's Chemical Supply Company. Thanking Aura for her information, we relaxed until our bumpy arrival at the R.C. Timmons Airport in New York. As we admired the graceful lines of the modern buildings, our attention was drawn to a plaque giving recognition to Ron Luman, the designer. After hailing another Brown Cab, we went directly to Platt’s Plaza, where P.J. himself welcomed us. While the two bellboys, Richard Helle and Jim Frame, struggled with our bags, we asked P.J. if any other of our classmates were presently staying at his hotel. Consulting the guest list, he disclosed that Alice Neville, WAVE recruiter, and Baroness Von Steuben, the former Annette Parr, were staying at the Plaza. Relaxing in our suite, we decided to call room service to order our supper. We recognized the familiar voice of Chris Matteson at the switchboard. We ordered Kentucky Fried Chicken, fried by our own Kentucky Jones - Arthur. The meals were delivered by John Burnett, who stayed awhile to recall high school days. Scanning a city newspaper. The Voice of New York, we came across an editorial, Ways to Win as a Twin , written by Don Luman, who had gained valuable experience while editing The Voice at Valley. Turning the page, we spied Heart Throb , an advice-to-the-lovelorn column by Cindy Sharpshair. Following Cindy's recommendation to be outgoing, we decided to go out. Hancock's Haven proved to be the ideal spot for what we had in mind. Dianna, greeting us warmly, instructed her head waiter, Danny Schisler, to show us to the best table, from which we could easily view the night's entertainment. Admiring the chorus line, we were fascinated by the talent displayed by Linda Landon. We heard familiar, loud whistles; and as we turned, we saw the bouncer, Susan Donaldson, approaching the table of Rich Myers. Rick Snyder, and Ron Edmonson. After a few words, Susan firmly seized each by the ear and deposited them outside the doors. The evening closed on a sentimental note as we fell asleep listening to Phil Leverton's brass band playing Washington and Lee Swing on the radio. Next morning we rented a car from Bowen's Rent-a-Chevy and headed for Chicago. Arriving there, we decided to relive our junior class trip and first visited the Museum of Science and Industry, where Terry Cremer guided us through the recently captured Russian spaceship. Bidding goodby to Terry, we went to the photography department, where Daniel Athearn was demonstrating his new invention, a camera which takes pictures that look three- dimensional. Leaving the building we noticed Judy Archdale at the souvenier counter selling guide books. Approaching the Museum of Natural History, we met John Williams and h i s enthusiastic world history students coming out. Once inside, we went immediately to see the mammoth elephant. Mike Mitchell, the museum's janitor, was energetically sweeping nearby. He advised us to go up to the second floor, where Zalene Murphy was lecturing on the jade collection. Because Zalene was in the middle of her lecture and unable to talk to us, we moved on to the fossil exhibit which Diana Fengel, the famed fossilologist, had contributed. Lunch at the Forum brought back pleasant memories, especially since Keith Dunblazier was head chef and Linda Bowles was waitress there. Dinner over, we took the subway to the Prudential Building. Phil Kennelly, we were delighted to learn, had chosen the appropriate career of subway conductor and now knew his way around. At the Prudential Building, Jim Buckman, the elevator boy, was spending part of his lunch hour looking out at the city. He's really come up in this world - on an elevator. Touring the building, we passed the offices of the renowned criminal lawyers, Dave Donaldson and 1 om Baker. Also with offices in the building were Greg DeCourcey, publisher of Playboy Magazine, and Kerry Willey, accountant. Confronted with a free afternoon, we made up our minds to watch TV in our hotel room. The first program was Hahn Hartstirn's Circus. We held our breath as we watched the daredevil feats of Ardith Owens and Bill Parli on the flying trapeze. The antics of the clowns seemed unbelievably amusing until we recognized them as Jim Endres, Mark Meyer, and Loren Tessier and realized they had received their ideas in study hall at Valley. As the horses trotted into the ring, the ringmaster announced that the star equestrian, Pat Porch, was unable to ride due to a slight accident involving her ankle. Disappointed, we switched channels just in time to see referee Tim Smith presenting the featherweight championship wrestling trophy to Mary Lindstrom. Sponsoring the next program was Wanda's Weatherproof Wigs. Wanda Davis had perfected a formula for preserving a gii.'s favorite hair style in spite of snow, rain, heat, gloom of night, or boys! The hero of the western, Rifle Fumes”, thi£ year's version of Gunsmoke , was Phil Tex Sullivan. The afternoon being almost over, we turned off the television and prepared for our boat ride on Lake Michigan. While walking to the pier, we passed Kathleen's Kasual Klothing. We stopped to say hello and Kathleen told us that Roger Gooding was her top designer. Arriving at Lynch's Launch, we bought our tickets from John Kidwell, who escorted us to our seats. Along the lake front we saw a large, colorful sign advertising, Mike's O K Used Junk (and Other Studebaker Parts) . Remembering Porch's passion, we knew the disaster area had to belong to our old classmate. The next day we headed for Rochester, Minnesota, where we had previously made arrange- ments with Andy F os hay to tour his hospital - The Dolly-Be-Jolly Doll Hospital. Although we were unable to speak to John Shortness, the head Surgeon, we were able to see him perform one of the most serious operations in a surgeon's career - restuffing a rag doll. We were pleased to note that Susan Livingston was assisting. We thanked Andy for our tour and departed for Hollywood. Upon our arrival we ate lunch at Connie'sCafe. Connie Thurman, who owned the establish- ment, recognized us and took time out to talk. While we were talking with Connie, Fred Voorhees entered the restaurant and joined us. We learned that he was in the oil business. When we informed him of the purpose of our visit to the United States, he told us that he had recently employed the aid of Roger Simkins, who had established a detective agency, Simkins Snoopy Service. Retiring to our hotel room, we listened on our radio to a half hour piano recital. The music was composed by Janet Rask and was played by the talented fingers of Lynda Stone. Our study completed, we returned to Schleich University. It is with pride we send you this account. The Junior Class officers who were elected at the end of the sophomore year were: Lyle Schuman, president; Jim Melton, vice- president; Jane Timmons, secretary; Elaine Stiarwalt, treasurer; and Erma Ulm, student council representative. Mrs. Rassmussen and Mr. Bennett guided the class through the year as sponsors. For the big fall event, the Homecoming Dance, Jackie Timmons and Kyle Kennelly were chosen to attend the king and queen. In the parade they rode on the float entitled, When you Wish Upon a Star . On November 20, the juniors presentated their play, Room and Bored . It was direct- ed by Miss Morris and enjoyed by all. Finally, just before Christmas vacation, their long-awaited class rings arrived. They were proudly worn by all of us. During lunch hours the junior stand was operated to finance the Junior-Senior Prom and Banquet. This highlight of the year was held on April 23. The highlight of the year was the annual class trip to Chicago in May. We are now looking forward to our last year at Valley as Seniors. 50 compliments of WALTER'S FLOWER SHOP, canton compliments of WYMAN LOCKWOOD, GENERAL TRUCKING, maquon Janet Anderson Mike Barker Janice Bevard Richard Bhear LuAnn Butler Carolyn Combs Nola Conger Harlan Cook Karen Cremer Bill Downing Karen Bndres Alberta Faucon Jerry Fayhee Karen Ferris Frank Ferry Leanne Grice COMPLIMENTS OF CORNER DRUGS SUNDRIES, LONDON M I LLS COMPLIMENTS OF FORNERIS GROCERY, ELLISVILLE Carol Harding Russell Jones Kyle Kennelly Vincent Knox Dennis Lefler Joanne Ludwig Phillip Marinich Sheila Maynard Laddie McComb Jim Melton Richard Mitchell Karen Moody Terry Moore Kay Bea Myers Van Tine Jerry Norville Connie Parli Doris Peck David Putman Carol Roberts Jim Roberts COMPLIMENTS OF WILSON FURNITURE COMPANY, FAIRVIEW COMPLIMENTS OF FAIRVIEW SERVICE STATION, FAIRVIEW Irene Ruggles Jerry Scnisler Lyle Schuman Carol Sherman Linda Smith Elaine Stiarwalt Randy Stoneking Rosemary Thompson Jeff Thurman Gloria Timmons Jackie Timmons Jane Timmons Erma Ulm Linda Van Houten Richard V a mold Don Voorhees Neva Wagner Warren Watkins Kenneth Williamson Donna Wilson Karen Young COMPLIMENTS OF COMPLIMENTS OF EKSTRAND'S GROCERY, fa.rview CORNBELT GARAGE, london mills compliments OF PARLI'S IMPLIMENT STORE, maquon compliments OF BENSON'S SALES, lonoon mills Seated: Mrs. Kennelly, Kick Bowen, Mr. Keithiey Standing: Roger Rask, Mug Sampson, Randy Hurst SOPHOMORE CLASS In the fall of 1964, 68 students became sophomores of Valley High School. Mrs. Requist, our advisor, has helped us greatly in setting up our annual this ear. Several meetings were held at the eginning of the school year to discuss cover design, colors, grain, dedication, and other miscellaneous items. Our yearbook is financed mainly through advertisements sold to various businesses in Canton, Fairview, London Mills, Maquon, Avon, Fiatt, Farmington, Galesburg, and other neighboring communities. Money is also ob- tained from the sale of plastic covers to protect our books in the spring. After the group pictures were taken in January, the actual organization of the annual began. Members of the staff and the officers stayed after school and worked on week- ends to complete the layout before the dead- line. When all the cutting, glueing, typing, and proofreading was finished, we sent our dummy copy off to the publishers. The Vall-Ee-Hi Staff proudly presents the 1965 yearbook. We hope that it w’ill help you remember all the fun and good times you have had at Valley this past year, and that it will be a memorial to your high school days. compliments or WILSON SALE COMPANY, fairview COMPLIMENTS OF PETERSON’S GROCERY, st augustine 65 ROW ONE: Lynda Stone, Connie Parli, Don l.uman, Mike Porch, Mrs. Requist, advisor.
