GENEVA THURMAN Each year the Vall-ee-hi is dedicated to a deserving person. This year we have chosen a teacher who is a friend of the students at Valley High, and has guided them toward their roles as mature useful adults. With her understanding of young people, she has succeeded as sponsor in helping the seniors with any problem, large or small. As an English teacher her enthusiasm and interest have helped students to gain an insight into the areas of literature and grammar. The Vall-ee-hi of 1964 is proudly dedicated to a person for whom everyone has the greatest respect, our senior sponsor, Mrs. Geneva Thurman. STANDING: Carl Sherman, Judy Fayhee, Marty Varnold. Senior Class History One August morning in 1961, seventy-six eager but uncertain students entered Valley to start their sophomore year. After memorizing schedules and classrooms, we began to feel as if we fit in. This comfortable feeling was soon dispelled by sophomore initiation and the initi- ations of the various organizations. At our first formal meeting as a class, we met our sponsors, Mrs. Geneva Thurman and Mr. Marvin Sibert. At this meeting we elected Carl Sherman as president; Gayla Worrell, secretary; Beverly Parr, treasurer; George Grice, student council rep- resentative; and Donna Toncray and Tom Timmons as Homecoming king and queen attendants. As the year progressed, we were caught up in the whirl of all-school activities! Then we took a breather for a sophomore dance on February 13. Though we enjoyed this year together, we looked forward, as all sophomores do, to our coming years as upperclassmen. Our junior year was formally opened with Jack Norris presiding as president, Rod Chatterton, vice-president; Betty Sherman, secretary; George Grice, treasurer; and Pat Cox, student council representative; who had been elected during our sophomore year. After electing Mary Sampson and Alan Walters for Homecoming attendants, we excitedly planned our float By the Light of the Silvery Moon. As ever, we juniors spent much time at the football games and noon hours in the junior stand. But even these activities were not so exciting as the arrival of our class rings. No one else could share our joy in displaying the rings—or our heart- break if they didn’t fit. Shortly afterward the rings played a prominent part in our play The Family Nobody Wanted. When the script called for an ex- change of rings, the stars followed directions and conveniently kept each other’s rings. After this, things went smoothly enough for the juniors until Prom time. Then things turned really hectic. While developing the theme, Plantation Paradise, we had many mishaps—some barely averted and others happening in spite of our efforts. And, of course, we have many enjoyable memories—Nelene’s tree, the gilded bird cages that turned out to be flower baskets, the murals, the goldfish pond that leaked, and the hurricane lamps. But, by the time the big day had arrived, no one was too tired to enjoy himseif at the banquet and prom. Another memory to add to this year was our trip to Chicago. We had so much fun that by the time we had returned to Galesburg, many were ready to turn around and go back. Fall of 1963. Ready to lead us into all the excitement and responsibilities of being a senior at Valley were George Grice, president; Gayla Worrell, vice-president; Judy Fayhee, Secretary; Carl Sherman, treasurer; and Marty Varnold, student council representative. While we decorated our float Golden Autumn Harvest for king and queen attendants, Rod Chatterton and Betty Sherman, the Student Council made the float for our Homecoming King and Queen, Dewey Morse and Gayla Worrell. After noting our depleted finances, we decided to sell candy at the operetta and senior play, and take orders for Viking jewelry. Soon after sponsoring the annual Christmas Dance, we selected D.A.R. and S.A.R. winners—Gayla Worrell and Dewey Morse, respectively. After thus starting the trend toward graduation, we picked red and white as class colors, a white carnation tipped with red for our flower, and the motto, Learning without thought is labor lost. Soon we were marching down the aisle for Bac- calaureate, May 23. We then received our diplomas at Commencement, May 28. Though we look forward to the future, we do look back with gratitude to all who made our final step possible, especially do we thank Mrs. Thurman and Mr. Sibert. I, CLYDE WARD, do will my ability to grow a beard to Andy Foshay and Bill Parli for next year's operetta. I, BERTHA WILLIAMSON, do will my long hair to Wanda Davis. I, JERRY WILLIAMSON, do will my ability to translate in Latin II class to anyone who wants to help Mrs. Kennelly out. I, GAYLA WORRELL, do will my long fingernails to anyone who isn't taking typing. To Mrs. Thurman, we will a bottle of nerve medicine so that it will help her to recuperate from being our sponsor for three years. To Mr. Little, we will a year's supply of corridor passes so that he will always be able to keep track of the new sophomores. To Dale Pauli, we will ten little helpers so all he will have to do is sit in his office and supervise. To the faculty, we will a year's supply of brownies for their Friday afternoon coffee sessions. To the juniors, we will a more substantial treasury than we had to start out the year. To the sophomores, we will a more dignified senior class than we were. In witness thereof we, the class of 1964, testator, have set our hand and seal on this 28th day of May in the year of 1964. 37 Class Prophecy In the twenty years that have passed since my graduation from Valley Senior School, I have fulfilled my political ambition to become Democratic Senate minority leader from the state of Illinois. Last Monday, finding myself in need of some legal advice, I decided to consult the noted criminal lawyer, William Ludwjg. As I hailed a cab, I was astonished to find the driver to be that lead-footed demon of my high school days, A Inn Walters. Why, it's George Grice! he greeted me. By the time we had finished recalling old times, we had arrived at my destination, the Varnafeller Center, named after the architect, Marty VarnoUL As I stepped into the elevator, the laughing, stuttering elevator boy, Robert Pruett, finally managed to inquire where I wanted to go. After a jerky ride to the thirty-fifth floor, I was somewhat relieved to find myself at the door of Bill’s office. Stepping into the office, I was greeted bv Donna Toncray, Bill's secretary. Please be seated, George, said Donna. Bill is in conference with clients at the present time , so make yourself at home. I think you'll be interested in some of those magazines. Picking up the Post, which lay on top, and leafing through it, my attention was drawn to an article titled How to Control Your Temper, by co-authors Paula Lwa.it, Barbara Helle, and Bertha Williamson. Amazing what time can accomplish! Next I caught a glimpse of several pictures of ballet dancers performing in Europe. Featured in the troupe were Linda LcGate and Leroy Roberts. In the same issue was an article, Howto Overcome the Labyrinth of Bookkeeping, by David Rice and Larry Harris. What a switch since their high school days. I then came across two full-page pictures of Sue Rice and Jack Norris, who had been selected as Most Devoted Wife of the Year, and Family Man of the Year, respectively. Since I have always been somewhat interested in science, I naturally picked up the Popular Science magazine next. I skimmed through, hoping to find more of my fellow graduates. My hopes were fulfilled when I saw that Stephen Effland and his able assistant, Antonctte Marinich had just successfully completed an experiment on The X-ray and Its Importance to the Bubble-Gum Industry. I knew this would bring happiness to many children and parents. Donna mentioned that I might be interested in the Farm Journal, as it was featuring Illinois as the State of the Month. The first article was by Keith Punkin Miller on the controversial subject, How to Raise the Biggest Pumpkins in the World. John Stier. the flying reporter, had interviewed Keith Abbadugjjy about his chicken farm, Keith Rohrer about his mass production fishing-worm farm, and Jpel Rutledge about his very successful Beetle Barn, a subsidiary of Keith's Worm-Works. The cover picture of Sports Illustrated featured that attractive Judo expert, Gayla Worrell and her traveling partner, Mary Sampson, who gave lessons to men and women with over-anxious mates. Game warden Jim Ferry had just been awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his apprehension of poachers and hand-fishers in Spoon River. Larry Huffman is star center for the Pilottown Pumps, a member of the newly formed Little NBA, which Larry has founded. His league limits the maximum height of players to five feet eight inches. Next week's issue will feature Mickey Rugglcs, newly crowned tiddley-winks champion. The front cover of the Medical News Reports pictured the massive Sherman General Hospital, named 38 after its founder and administrator, Carl Dean Sherman. Reading through the issue, I came across a series of articles concerning several of his associates. The first was ’’Carrot Juice and Crackers for Better Health,” by the famous nutritionist Judy Fayhec. In her article she mentioned that her human guinea pig Rodney Chatterton had lost one hundred twenty-five pounds on this simple six-weeks plan. A laboratory report, submitted by Doctors Betty Sherman and Lvnctte Helms conclusively proved that their vitamins, Grow-Bigs,” were the biggest success since the Twist! Paula Waldron, the supervisor of nurses, was the recipient of a Good Service Award for her faithful service at the hospital. Photographs by Judson Briggs showing extensive treatment given to mental patients in the hospital featured Nelene Bylsma as the model patient and Sheila Hahn as the tender loving nurse. Barbara Smith was taking notes on the patient's progress for her future book on mental health. Near the back of the magazine, I found an ad with an application blank for ordering a booklet on ”How to Improve Your Muscular Physique with the D H Melvin Plan.” If I remember correctly, Don's masculinity in high school was some-what limited. Better Homes and Gardens, of which Judy Brown was editor and Carol Sampson Designer and Color- Co-ordinator, contained a special article by David Nesbit revising Carnegie's ”How to Win Friends and Influence People.” I remember how polite and thoughtful David was in high school, especially to the girls. A picture of Penny Armstrong showed her displaying her prize-winning Super-Sonic Spinach Salad. I had time to notice that Richard Thurman was editor of Playboy Magazine before the door of Bill's office opened. Lauretta Parli and Linda Melton came out, seemingly satisfied with Bill's advice which was to pay their fifty-cent traffic fine instead of appealing to higher courts as they had planned. Several hours later, I left his office with the assurance that he could successfully present my case. On my way out I met Dewey Morse, who was president of the Teamster's Union, and was also in legal difficulties. After my descent to the ground floor I decided to spend a few hours relaxing by viewing a movie. Most appealing to me was Under the Plump, Plump Tree” starring that handsome, debonaire Mickey Riley. I guess Mickey's girl-chasing finally paid off for him. The second show. Lover, Go Away,” starred that vivacious Beverly Parr. Leaving the show, I was startled at the sounds of screeching tires, the smell of burned rubber, and the wail of police sirens. Richard Overcash and his protective motorcycle escort, consisting of Jerry Barkley. Mike Schulthes. and Clyde Ward had been halted by patrolmen Tom Timmons and Mike Hahn, and were to be taken to Judge Paul Hollister's court for sentencing. Hailing a cab, I proceeded to my hotel, the exclusive Will-Villa, owned and operated by Jerry Williamson and Tgm NpryiUe. As I didn't feel like retiring quite yet, I switched on television to catch the hilarious pantomime portion of the John Red” Downing show. John was always a goof-off in school. John's special guest was Pat Cox, the world famous blues trumpeter. Immediately following John's show was the Outer Limits.” It was no surprise to me to see that the script was written by Fern Doll and starred Astrid Miller and Karen Metelka as the Bald Women from Planet X. I remember Astrid and .Karen never did much with their hair!! I grew quite tired as the show neared its end, but I didn't mind because my experiences that day had reacquainted me with all my fellow graduates. I dropped off to sleep with a smile on my face and a satis- fying warmth in my heart. 39 George Grice Judson Briggs Mary Sampson Lynette Helms Antonette Marinich John Downing Tom Timmons Sheila Hahn Lauretta Parli Paula Waldron Fern Doll Bertha Williamson Donna Toncray and Friend Bill Ludwig Astrid Miller and Friends Joel Rutledge David Nesbit Sue Rice Barbara Helle Judy Brown Judy Fayhee COMPLIMENTS OF DeKALB SEED CORN DEALER-------GLEN (puoj EFFLAND, LONDON mills Larry Huffman Carol Sampson Linda Melton Barbara Smith Alan Walters and Friend Xinderg rad Junior Class Officers SEATED: Mrs. Wilcoxen, Bill Parli, Mr. Willis. The jun- iors were guided through the year by Mrs. Wilcoxen and Mr. Willis. For the annual homecoming events, Marilyn Schuman and Bill Parli were chosen to attend the King and Queen. In the parade, the couple rode on the float decorated by the juniors entitled Hang Class Your Heart From a Star.” November 15, 1963, was a big day for the juniors as they presented their play, If a Body Meet a Body.” Two weeks later they were dis- playing their long-awaited class rings. During noon hours and other activities the junior stand was operated to help finance the Junior-Senior Prom and Banquet to be held on April 24, 1964. The conclusion to the juniors busy year was their trip to Chicago on May 2, 1964. Our sponsors are Mrs. Rasmussen and Mr. Bennett. Just when we thought our routine was going smoothly, sophomore initiation was on the agenda. We were assigned costumes to wear, made to perform stunts, and then the actual terrifying initiation in the afternoon. However, no casualties were noticed after the event. Homecoming time and our first time at decorating a car for our homecoming attendants, Irene Ruggles and Jim Melton. Vall-Ee-Hi Staff The Vall-ee-hi staff hopes you enjoy your yearbook as much as we have enjoyed preparing it for you. At the first of the year the basic plans for the yearbook were decided. Staff meetings were held and the important items such as design of the yearbook, dedication, color, etc. were discussed. To finance the Vall-ee-hi, the staff sold advertisements to the businesses of the neighboring towns and in the spring sold the plastic covers to place over the yearbooks. After the group pictures were taken by Mr. Burch in January, many nights after school and all day on Saturdays were spent cutting, pasting, typing, and proofreading the layout sheets. When the dummy copy was completed, we made a last proofread- ing check and sent it off to the press. For three months we anxiously awaited the arrival of the yearbooks to see the results of our work. The yearbook staff and Mrs. Roberts present the 1964 Vall-ee-hi to you in the hopes that you will remember all your good times and friends at Valley Senior High School. The fifty-six members of the Valley Girls' Athletic Association have fulfilled their purpose of promoting athletics and encouraging good sportsmanship in the ir many activities during the 1963-64 year. During the summer the G.A.A. members welcomed the freshmen girls at a picnic and swimming at Wee-Ma-Tuk Country Club. They also sent their vice-president, Nelene Bylsma, and Judy Fayhee to G.A.A. Leadership Camp at Bloomington and helped send the cheerleaders to camp. In September the girls went swimming and hiking. Later in the year they earned more activity points by bowling after school. October brought the homecoming parade with many G.A.A. girls decorating and riding bicycles for their theme— We're Peddling the News—Valley will win. The organization sponsored a card party in November. The new year brought the initiation of new members with an impressive candle- light ceremony followed by a Sadie Hawkins Dance. Latin Club The purpose of the Latin Club of Valley High School is to preserve for future club members a better understanding of Latin and a closer relationship with the Roman way of life and with each other. This year’s membership is the largest we have had. The twenty-two new members were initiated November 18 by having to wear tunics, sing Latin songs, and being sold at a slave market. In January the members decided to have a night meeting. This meeting proved so successful that the club voted to continue the practice. After the regular meeting and program, the members enjoyed ping pong, charades, and Latin traveling bingo. The first big money-making project of the year was a car wash held September 27 in London Mills, Maquon, and Fairview. Other projects were the candy sales at the junior class play and during noon hours at school. Both of these projects were for the purpose of having the annual Latin Club banquet, held at the Holiday Inn in Peoria on April 17. Band The Valley High band under the direction of Mr. Richard Hogan started the year with anticipation of the coming events. The first few months were busily spent learning new steps and formations for half-time entertainment provided at the home football games. This year the band used cap-lights at the performances. We also enjoyed performing with the Northwestern band at one of our away games. For the half-time program the Valley band and Northwestern band performed separately and then formed a mass band. Next on our schedule was our participation in the Canton Fall Festival. The biggest event of the football season was our trip to Macomb, Illinois, where we took part in Western University’s homecoming activities. Later in November, Pat Porch, Bill Parli, Carol Sampson, John Shortness, and Pat Cox were chosen to represent Valley in the band division of the All-State Music Festival in Macomb. Pep Club To build school spirit and good sportsman- ship is the main purpose of the Pep Club. To help build this school spirit and sportsmanship, the members are required to attend a certain number of games and to help make posters for games. The Pep Club sponsored a Sock Hop on December 6, 1963, and sold Valley Viking pins to help finance their treasury. In 1963 the Pep Club gained recognition in the Student Council, after being an organi- zation on a trial basis for two years. President.............. Mike Hahn Vice President ............. .
