Senior Class History The fifty-three frightened but anticipating sophomores will long remember that autumn day in 1960 when they entered those open doors of Valley for the first time. Our most important activities as soph- omores were learning to place the new names with all the unfamiliar faces, initiation, and electing class officers. They were: president, Curtis Donaldson; secretary, Pat Neville; treasurer, Earl Ferry, Student Council Representative, Lynn Utsinger. We excitedly planned and decorated our homecoming float A Vote for Valley” and gave our votes for king and queen attendants to Regina Morse and Jim Young. All in all, we discovered that our sophomore year had been an entertaining, as well as informative one, but we were all anxiously looking forward to our following year as upperclassmen. Our junior class officers were: president, Ivan Gordon; vice president, Marion Stuckey; secretary, Norma Dunn; treasurer, Sandra Roberts; Student Council Representative, Kristine Lafferty. When the homecoming arrived, we chose Marion Stuckey and Phyllis Davis as the junior attendants on our float Pennies from Heaven . Our long-awaited class rings arrived and we unanimously agreed that they were the prettiest yet. We later had a lot of hard work but also a lot of fun, rehearsing and staging our play We Shook the Family Tree. During noon hours and at football games we spent many hours working in the junior stand to make money to help finance the junior-senior prom and banquet. Sooner than it seemed possible, prom time had arrived. Hours and hours went into the planning and decorating for our prom and banquet Shangri-La . By the end of this unbelievably busy year, all were ready for some relaxation— and relaxation we found. It was in the form of our Chicago trip—much fun, many experiences, and a closer unity among our classmates. The much awaited year arrived—finally we were seniors. We were ready to tackle all the problems, responsibilities, and enjoyment that was alloted solely to the seniors. President Lynn Utsinger led our list of officers which was also composed of: vice president, Sharon Wilson; secretary, Herschel McDonnough; treasurer, Mary Jo Miller; and Student Council Representative, Phillip Miller. Queen Marcy Murphy and King Jon Owens were given the honor of reigning over this year's Homecoming. Class pictures arrived just in time to exchange them before Christmas. At Christmas we co-sponsored the Dance with the Alumni. Soon graduation became the main topic of we seniors. We chose our flower to be a white carnation tipped with blue; our class colors are blue and white. Our class and the faculty selected Marcy Murphy as D.A.R. winner and Herschel McDonnough as S.A.R. winner. Baccalaureate on May 26 and Commencement on May 29 concluded our three years at Valley. We are grateful to Mr. Little for his three years' of guidance and to e each Mrs. Luxner, Mr. Carter and Mr. Messmore for his one year of help. H 6 6 J Class Prophecy As we stop now in the year 2,000 we recall the memories that accompany our junior class trip to Chicago. Since we were curious as to the changes in that city, we decided to go there for a first-hand look. Since the old type trains were long since gone we decided to take the new monorail train from the new station in Galesburg which was built a few years back by the DREDGE and DONALDSON Construction company. Everyone got to the station alright,, but what happened to ROSE DOWELL, KRIS LAFFERTY. DAVID WALKER, and DON NORVILLE? Evidently they had encountered a little trouble along the way. We were greeted at the station by that handsome, but slightly bald-headed conductor, EARL FERRY. We knew that we would soon be in Chicago because our train was being skillfully driven by those two lead-footed engineers, JANICE McCONE and RICK UTSINGER. It took these two wild engineers ten seconds to get the train wound up, and it took the remaining six minutes of the trip for the two powerful brakemen DAVID BROWN and BILL BRIGGS to get the train slowed down enough to enter the Chicago yards without being arrested by Yards Marshal JIM YOUNG or one of his deputies, BILL SVOB, JOHN SORRELLS or KEN BARKER. Upon arrival at the station, we were transferred to an atomic-powered bus with STAN COMBS at the wheel and WAYNE PORCH at the atomic reactor. The first place we visited was the Museum of Science and Industry, where we were greeted by our talkative guides DIANE OVERTON and JANICE FRANKLIN. After a short five minute tour everyone went to see what he was most interested in. If anyone needed directions for finding a certain place, he could ask LYLE UTSINGER, DONALD RENEAU, RICHARD TRACEY, or GARY WHITE, because they seemed to know their way around this building so well. We observed that both MARCY MURPHY and MARY JO MILLER were very interested in the kitchen of tomorrow display. We saw LYNN UTSINGER and PAT NEVILLE still looking at all the displays in the Antique auto section. At noon, we left the museum, boarded the bus, and went to McCormick Place. With our lunch, we had some delicious milk directly from LYLE LEVERTON'S famous Holstein dairy farm. After dinner we listened to a stirring speech given by that great evangelist, ALAN AUSTIN, who later admitted that he couldn’t have performed so well if IVAN GORDON hadn’t held the idiot cards for him. We then decided to go for a boat ride on Lake Michigan. Whom should we find in the ticket booth but our old classmate CHARLOTTE SWISE? After everyone had bought his ticket, we all boarded an excursion boat, piloted by HERSCHEL McDONNOUGH. You’ve never seen a pair of real sea legs until you’ve watched Herschel standing at the wheel. Herschel did a very good job of piloting the boat until he came to the second lock gate; which he tried to go through before MARION STUCKEY got it opened. Oh, well, in a few weeks JIM HELLE and his gang will have it fixed as good as new. Deciding not to stay on Maxwell Street very long, we got back in our bus and headed for the Riverview Amusement Park only to find it closed. One thing puzzled us though. Since the park was closed, why were SANDRA ROBERTS and KAY ROHRER selling tickets for the parachute Jump? Why were KAREN BROWN, ALICE GEORGE, and NANCY WAGNER riding on the new roller coaster? We later found out that they had all gone together and bought the place and they wanted to ride all the things before anyone else got a chance. Since we couldn't get in to Riverview, some of us went to the movies. PHIL MILLER went to see MOUSE ON A COLD BOARD FLOOR which is this year's version of CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF. He seemed to like the picture - very understandable since SHARON WILSON was the leading lady. When only ten people came out of the theater, it was obvious that DENNY SHEWELL and MARVIN POWERS had made a goofy investment when they bought that theater. Having a few hours to kill before train time, a few of the girls headed for the DUNN DAVIS dress shop to see some of the latest fashions. This year's hemline is somewhere between the knees and the ankles, the exact location depending upon how tall the girl is. Leaving the dress shop, we took the bus across town to Maxwell Street where we saw JON OWENS and NORMA BRASHEAR haggling with a peddler. They were still trying for a reduced price on a used diamond ring. Heading toward the train station, we passed a huge tent from which was coming much, excited shouting. Overcome by our curiosity, we stepped inside, and much to our surprise encountered two old friends, REGINA MORSE and RUTH PRUITT, holding a temperance meet- ing. Finally, reaching the station, we climbed aboard the train, wishing we could return in the future. Who knows? We may in another 50 years. The class officers were elected at the end of the sophomore year: President, Jack Norris; Vice President, Rod Chatterton; Secretary, Betty Sherman; Treasurer, George Grice; and Student Council Representative, Patty Cox. The class was faithfully led through the year by Mrs. Thurman and Mr. Sibert. For the big fall event, the Homecoming Dance, Mary Sampson and Alan Walters were chosen to attend the King and Queen. In the parade they rode on the float entitled ”By the Light of the Silvery Moon.” After arriving at the end of November, the class rings were proudly worn by all. ’’The Family Nobody Wanted,” the class play presented December 6, 1962, was a huge success. It was directed by Mrs. Vollmar. During noon hours, ballgames, and dances, the junior stand operated faithfully to finance the Junior-Senior Prom and Banquet. This highlight of the year was held April 28, 1963. The conclusion to the many wonderful hours spent together by the junior class members was the class trip to Chicago in the spring. Another wonderful and exciting year as seniors is now awaited by each 1962-63 junior. 44 Compliments of BROWN'S FOOD MARKET Avon Compliments of WILSON SALE COMPANY Fairview Judy Archdale Thomas Baker John Botkin Gary Bowen Linda Bowles Nancy Brown James Buckman Terry Cremer Wanda Davis Greg DeCourcey Sophomores Susan Donaldson Keith Dunblazier Ronnie Edmonson James Endres Gary Erwin Dianna Fengel Richard Ford Andy Foshay Jim Frame David Franklin Compliments of WALTER'S FLOWER SHOP Compliments of WILSON FURNITURE STORE Canton Fairview 42 Mary George Arthur Jones Roger Gooding Dotty Hahn Dianna Hancock Jo Ann Hartstlm Phil Kennelly John Kldwell Sophomores James Lafary Linda Landon Philip Leverton Mary Llndstrom Susan Livingston Yurona Loveland Donald Luman Ronald Luman Larry Lynch Gary Marvel Christina Matteson Mark Meyer Compliments of NORMA JEAN'S BEAUTY SHOP Compliments of GRIFFITH SHOE SHOP 4« Fiatt Ellisville Z lene Murphy Richard Myers Alice Neville Leslie Overcash Ardith Owens BUI Parli Annette Parr P. VALL-EE-HI The VALL-EE-HI Staff met shortly after school began to select the color and grain of the annual cover and to choose the person to whom the 1962-63 edition would be dedicated. In September we sold advertisements to the var- ious businesses of the surrounding towns. Later we sold annuals to the students and faculty. Soon after, the pictures were taken for the activities and also for the Individual class pages. The members of the staff spent many hours after school and on Saturdays measuring, cutting, and pasting write-ups and pictures on the layout sheets. For the completion of the annual there was proofreading before it could be sent to the press. These are a few of the things you'd hear if you listened in the day the paper comes out. Our editor of THE VOICE is Kristine Lafferty who works hard with Mary Sampson, assistant editor, to make the paper both interesting and informative. THE VOICE is published under the help and guidance of our new sponsor Miss Sara Snyder who is new at Valley this year and is taking the place of Mrs. Roberts. We wish to welcome our new sponsor and hope she likes sponsoring THE VOICE. After an issue of the paper has been published, it is sent to subscribers, school board members, different schools, and graduates of Valley who are in military service. The staff of our school newspaper works hard to inform the kids around Valley about the latest happenings and activities and it is a good feeling to see everyone standing around reading the latest issue of THE VOICE. The first big event of the year was the initiation of twenty-eight new slaves. In December the slaves celebrated the Saturnalia by receiving the master- slave relationship. Throughout the year, Latin Club sold candy and Valley Viking bracelets to raise money for the banquet. Members developed skits and produced them at the February meeting.
