VALLEY SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL Fairview, Illinois Vall-Ee-Hi Marla Jo Metelka, Editor V A L L E Y H I G H S c H O o L H o M E 0 F T H E V 1 K I N G S VALLEY LOYALTY SONG We take a stand now for Valley High School, Our colors orange and black we fly, A loyal tribute, a pledge of honor true, Now we sing forth her name on high, Believe us! Valley, We'll be with you ever 'Tho' years pass, your memory lives on! Alma Mater lead us onward------- On ‘till our goal is won. Mrs. Joy Roberts This year's dedication of the VALL-EE-HI is an extra special surprise. The VALL-EE-HI ad- visor, Mrs. Roberts, would not allow the staff to dedicate the VALL-EE-HI to her. We, the 1960-61 VALL-EE-HI Staff, would like to dedicate our 1961 VALL-EE-HI to our ad- visor, friend, and teacher, Mrs. Joy Roberts, who besides her classroom duties, is advisor of the school paper, the annual, and makes the programs for all the school activities of the year. We would like to take this opportunity to show our appreciation for her many extra hours of work for Valley and its students. Surprise, Mrs. Roberts! Ml!! KENNETH HAMMAN London Mills 6 Compliments of TOMPKINS STATE BANK, Member of F. D. I.C.,—Avon The Board of Education, composed of dedicated citizens, willingly give precious time and effort to improve our unit schools. They attend regular meeting to form school policies and de- cide how to spend the taxpayer's dollar. Theirs is the responsibility for maintaining a qualified faculty. We, as the staff of VALL-EE-HI and as Valley High students, would like to commend these men for a good job. Compliments of EKSTRANDS’ STORE—Fairview 7 Administration H. E. WOOD - Superintendent Culver-Stock ton, B.S. University of Missouri, M.A. J. B. RODEFFER - Principal Monmouth College, B.S. Western Illinois State College, M.A Although the Board of Education formulates the policies for the Valley schools, very little would be accomplished unless these policies were carried through by Mr. H. E. Wood, superintend- ent, and Mr. J. B. Rodeffer, principal. Mr. Wood, who has been in the teaching profession for thirty-six years, works hard to keep the unit in running order. This is his thirteenth year at Valley, the last five of which he has been superintendent. Mr. Rodeffer, always ready to advise and help the students at Valley, does an efficient job of running the high school. He, in addition to his duties as principal, teaches Algebra II and physics. Class History Our introductory step into Valley was more or less foisted upon us as sophomores, but nevertheless, we all enjoyed the fun of initiation. By the time we had learned who each other was, and had learned the identities of the upperclassmen, much of the year was gone. But we did eventually settle down to the routine of Valley and become a third of Valley's population. Our most difficult and important job as sophomores was choosing our class officers. They were: president-Gary Kempster; secretary-Mary Melton; treasurer-Jeff Waldron; Student Council representative-Sheryl Young. We next discovered the fun of homecoming and elected Sharon Cook and Gary Kempster as our king and queen attendants. By the end of the school term we had found that our sophomore year had been an interesting and informative one. We looked forward to the added prestige and savoir-faire that goes with being upperclassmen. We chose as our junior officers: president-Robert Lundry; secretary-Jitana Hamman; treasurer-Carol Grice; Student Council representive-Gary Kempster; vice-president-Lee Reed; reporter-Sharon Cook. Our junior year was busy as we elected Jitana Hamman and Jim Lafferty as our homecoming king and queen attendants, decorated our homecoming car, and cheered at the game. We were all very pleased over our class rings, which we soon found distinguished us from all other Valley classes and bound us a little more together as a group. We later had the fun and work of our class play, CHINA BOY. With the money earned from the junior refreshment stand, we planned and enjoyed our junior-senior prom and banquet. Our theme was Hawaiian Paradise. We climaxed our junior year in an exciting trip to Chicago. The end of our junior year found us looking forward with antic- ipation and anxiety to being seniors. We honored, as seniors, Marla Jo Metelka and Galen Timmons as our homecoming Queen and King. This eagerly-awaited year was not disappointing to us. Our officers, which we had chosen at the end of our junior year, were: president-Keith Sherman; vice-president-John Morey; secretary-Sharon Cook; treasurer-Dor is St ier; Student Council representative-Jane Combs. We looked forward to graduation as we chose our class colors— lavender and silver, flower—a white rose, and our motto—Wisdom comes to no one by chance. Marla Jo Metelka received the D.A.R. Award and Robert Lundry the Good Citzenship Award. As the year came to an end and we all began making plans for our future, we realized what good times and good friends we had had during our three years at Valley, and before that in grade school. Then we learned why the oldtimers at Valley had said, Enjoy your school years. We are grateful to Mrs. Rasmussen and Mr. Bennett, our friends and teacher, for their helpful guidance. The revue will be sponsored by JOHN MOREY, the eccentric millionaire, who made his million in cheesecake. He was the second man on the moon and so he had first chance at all the cheese there. Between acts we will hear MARIBETH WALKER sing her latest hit, It's Too Soon To Moon Over You, which was written by OLLIE K. RICE. Maribeth's manager, JIM McCONE, her hair stylist, JIM LAFFERTY, and her fashion designer, BECKY COCHRAN are all enjoying Maribeth's fame and fortune. We would like you to be present at the dedication of our new hospital which was de- signed by WAYNE WIDGER. DR. JAMES LEFFINGWELL and nurse, PAT HAHN have worked diligently in obtaining contributions. KEITH SHERMAN, president of the First National Moon Bank, will cut the ribbon, we think. He may give the honors to his fiancee, JITANA HAMMAN. A festival will climax the big day. At the festival all the business organizations will be represented by booths. The judo tent, run by instructor JANE COMBS, will be the center of attraction on the grounds. The salesmen have a group of the most important tents there. Moonbeams appliances will be represented by their most loquacious salesman DAVID HARPER. LYNN OVERCASH, not having David's gift of gab, hopes you will take a midget moon wagon back to earth with you to improve his sales somewhat. Next to Jane's judo tent, JUDY BOGARD's refreshment tent will be the most popular, serving moonburgers topped with spicy starlight sauce. One evening's entertainment will take place at MARLA METELKA's Milky Way Drag Strip featuring the two local favorites, SHARON SuDersonic COOK and BARBARA Satellite DONALDSON. The girls' space cars are expertly attended by their favorite mechanic, JOE RODEFFER. The next day HAROLD ROCK will take his Oldsmobubble out for an experimental run. FRED JONES will be the official timekeeper and GLENDA JOHNSON the official flag waver. Glenda prefers purple and pink polka dot flags instead of the official black and white checkered ones. After the test run CAROL GRICE, the safe driving instructor, will give a lesson on Correct procedure for passing a space ship. On the way to JUDY WILLIAMS and SYLVIA PIPPITT's hotel, Starlite Arms, where you will spend the evening 37 you will undoubtedly pass KAREN HAGAMAN's termite farm. After arriving at the hotel you may need a haircut and shave which you can receive at RALPH SWISE's famous barber shop. Since we know all Americans have a weight problem we would like to recommend CYNTHI NORVILLE's Fading Star Reducing Salon. Police Magistrate, MARGARET MILLER, will keep law and order at GARY KEMPSTER's and LOIS ANN MORSE's Fallen Star Saloon Saturday evening. Sunday morning before go- ing to revival we suggest a leisurely ride in BOB BABBITT'S pay your fine taxi. DONALD ABBUDUSKY's volcano farm will be your first glimpse of the rural area. Next, will be CLAUDE MARTIN's chicken farm, where he raises Pink Rock chickens. Claude was written up on the Who's Who on the Moon when he discovered this breed by crossing Red Rock with White Rock chickens. TERRY ANDERSON, his business manager, proved to be a great asset to him in this project. The highlight of the rural recreational area is PAT PARR and TERRY SVOB's Satellite Track where the midget moon wagons race every Sunday afternoon. You will also pass LEE REED's distillery where the moon's most popular moonshine is distilled. His favorite cousin, ELAINE RICE, is chief bottle washer. After returning to the Starlight Arms, you will be taken to the final revival services at the festival grounds with ROBERT HARTSTIRN, the great evangelist, giving one of his famous fire and brimstone sermons. On Monday morning Babbitt's taxi will take you to our new ultramodern school to talk with our school principal, GALEN TIMMONS. First hour you will visit MARY JO MYERS' girls' Physical Education class where SHERYL YOUNG is the official referee. After the girls' P. E. class you will probably enjoy a visit with our school psychiatrist, your old buddy, JEFF WALDRON, who is kept on duty all the year round and is on the verge of a nervous breakdown. TERRY TINDER and his assistant coach, DUANE WATTERS, will show you their coveted trophies won in the Tiddlywink Tournament. If you wish to use our library, JOYCE BAKER will be pleased to help you. You will also see how busy our truant officer, BARBARA SHAWGO is from keeping the children in school and not taking off in their suped-up moon rockets. Before your departure, we would like you to visit Sorrells' General Store, owned and operated by GILES and DON SORRELLS. RUTH THURMAN is employed as chief clerk, TERRY RUTLEDGE will deliver all your souvenirs to your rocket ship. We are certainly looking forward to your arrival. Very cordially yours. The elected officers for the year are Pres- ident—Dennis Harper; Vice-President—Dorothy Nesbit; Secretary—Dick Chatterfon; Treasurer—Karen McKeever; and Student Council representative — Fred Swanson. The class advisors are Mrs. Kennelly and Mr. Keithly. The juniors spent many hours working in the Junior-stand—during noon hours, dances, football games, and basketball games. The junior class attendants to the Homecoming King and Queen were Karen McKeever and Fred Swanson, who appeared on our float entitled Valley Sweethearts in the parade. The Junior Class Play Terror in the Suburbs, was presented November 18, 1960, under the direction of Mrs. Gurley. Our long-awaited class rings arrived the last of November and were proudly worn by all. A skating party sponsored by the juniors during Christmas vacation was enjoyed by those who attended. Several months of preparation went into the planning of the highlight of our junior year-the Junior-Senior Prom and Banquet. Paradise of the Deep was the chosen theme. Our trip to Chicago in the spring brought to a close our activity-filled year with prospects for another suc- cessful year as seniors. Student Council Consisting of class and organization presidents and representatives, the Student Council prides itself on being the legislative branch of the student body at Valley. Led by President Robert Lundry, the Council planned the homecoming, approved guest permits for student activities, and chose assembly programs. Throughout the school year, under the guidance of Mr. Ham, the Student Council acted as a liaison body between faculty and students and between organizations. This year the Student Council organized an intra-school presidential election, which showed that the majority of Valley's students would have voted for Richard Nixon, had they been old enough. Vall-Ee-Hi This year's Vall-ee-hi staff of twenty students has certainly enjoyed putting the 1961 VALL-EE-HI together for you. We hope you will get as many hours of enjoyment out of your 1960-61 annual as we have had preparing it for you. The new staff members discovered there was much to plan and to do for each page of our annual. They found that the dummy was our first plan and guide. Then came the job of selling advertisements and the annuals them- selves. The taking of the pictures by Mr. Burch was easy compared to the measuring, cutting, and pasting of each picture on the layout sheets. After the big job of proofreading the 1960-61 annual was ready for the press. I'm sure they'll agree that the long wait for the new annuals was just as hard as the work that went into our annual. The 1960-61 Vall-ee-hi staff and Mrs. Roberts present to you the 1961 VALL-EE-HI to remember all the fun we've had and friends we've made at Valley High School. The Voice The busiest time of the journalism class is the day the paper is published. The mimeograph is run at full speed and there is a steady hum of voices as the students type, proofread, and gather pages for each issue. Our editor, Jitana Hamman is busy with Mrs. Roberts, our sponsor, making sure all articles are typed on rough draft and then on stencil. Linda Tiezzi is our assistant editor, and although she isn't in the journalism class this year, she has an assignment to complete for every issue of THE VOICE. During the next class period after the paper is published, the journalism class goes over the entire paper, page by page, giving constructive criticism to each other. Then the papers are addressed and sent to subscribers, school board members, graduates of Valley who are in the service, and schools in the surrounding area. Although a great amount of time and work is put on each issue of THE VOICE, it is rewarding to the student as he sees his articles in print and knows that they are being read by the student body. 52 Compliments of STATE BANK OF CUBA—Cuba Dennis Harper, Carol Grice, Margoret Miller, Judy Bogard, Jane Combs, Mrs. Kennelly, Doris Stier, Beo Rhea Platt, Glenda Johnson, David Harper. Fifty-five girls have worked and played together this year in developing their theme, Future Homemakers, Future Citizens. September was a busy month when twenty-one girls were initiated. October was topped off with a lot of fun by having a comic style prevue of Paris Fashions and a watermelon bust. We had an entry in the Homecoming parade with a float which was entitled A Recipe to Success. For the Christmas festivities we made Christmas corsages and enjoyed a Christmas party. The first grade Christmas party was a success with our chapter father, Ralph Deushane, acting as Santa Claus. Our daddys enjoyed a night out with their daughters on Daddy Date Night. We were stuffed with pizza after a January party. During F.H.A. Week many beautiful fashions were displayed at the annual Spring Style Show. A home economist highlighted our February meeting by giving a talk on House of Fashions. Other demon- strations were parliamentary procedure, getting along with your parents, and a hair stylist. Our year was brought to a close by honoring our senior girls and entertaining our mothers at a mother- daughter banquet where our officers for the new year were installed. ROW ONE: G. Johnson, V. Decorating a float for the homecoming parade was next on the list of activities for the girls. The float, representing a bowling alley, was entitled Knock 'em Down. The big event of the year for the organ- ization was the G.A.A. Carnival which was held on February 11. After working hard, everyone had fun at the Happy Hollow in the Valley gym. A card party was also sponsored in the spring to help out the treasury. Two girls will be selected to attend the G.A.A. camp in Bloomington.
