Valley School Song Oh, when those Valley Vikings take the floor. We know that they are going to raise the score, And for the Valley Vikings' team I yell. And for the Valley team I yell, I yell, I yell; Then we will strive to win for Valley High; We'll fight for V-l-C-T-O-R-V, And then we'll fight, fight, fight For Orange and Black—Orange and Black, Valley High. 2 Compliments of Wyman Lockwood, General Trucking; Graves Grain Feed — Maquon Sarah Rasmussen To a teacher, among the oldest in years of service but youngest in spirit, we the staff of the VALL-EE-HI dedicate our yearbook for the school year 1958-59. Sarah Rasmussen, Physical Education teacher of Valley Senior High School, has that vitality which keeps her in constant touch with student activities and problems. Whatever the problem, plans for the next school dance or bowling after school, a group of girls can usually be found clustered around Mrs. Rasmussen. Certainly every girl of Valley has felt and appreciated her influence. Her pleasing personality is responsible for a number of friends, both students and faculty. Any person passing through Valley is a friend of Mrs. Rasmussen. Compliments of Cuba Motor Company; Harwick's Furniture Store — Cuba FRONT ROW: John Morkley, John lofferty, Robert Sherman, BOARD AT WORK Harold Omer. BACK ROW: Cloude Jones, Kenneth Hammon, Leo Utsinger. Administration A big Thank You goes to the Board of Education, the gentlemen who generously donate their time, work, and effort in making Valley Senior High School a better school for both faculty and students. This year the Board of Education has been planning and working for a new school or additional buildings to the present one. They have put forth their effort—now it is up to the people of Spoon River Valley to see that the education of their children is not hindered due to the lack of facilities. H. E. H. S. was a rather diffi- cult one for it was that of initiation. But somehow we all got through it with flying colors, orange and black, no less. Being accepted as Volley students, we settled down to the tasks at hand. But we soon found our activities were limited and so we took a back seat to the upper classmen. Our first major job was to elect our class officers and they were: President, Richard Kempster; Secretary, Hazel Williamson; Treasurer, Joyce Kempster; and Student Council Representative, Diane Walker. The election of Don Cecil and Joan Vollmar as our King and Queen candidates was our second and final important task. The following Atoy all fifty-eight of us felt it had been an interesting and enjoyable first year at Valley. Then as juniors we took our second big step of high school life. It was taken with added knowledge and anxiety. Those chosen to lead us for the year were: Glen Melton, President; Janet Beck, Secretary; Roger Tinder, Treasurer; Darla Nesbit, Reporter; and Richard Kempster, Student Council Representative. Our Homecoming King and Queen candidates, of whom we were very proud, were Maureen Essex and Roger Tinder. In addition, we were very proud of our shiny new class rings which came in early November, the same day the class plays were pre- sented. With the proceeds from the refreshment stand we prepared for the Junior- Senior Prom with the theme Evening in Paris being carried out by a mural of the Paris landscape painted by Mr. Taylor. The class trip to Chicago was a fitting cli- max to what was all in all a very good year, and all fifty-four of us looked forward to being seniors. While members of the senior class, we took our third and final step, graduation, something most of us had been waiting for, for a long time. Our class officers for the final year were: President, Don Cecil; Secretary, Bill Soper; Treasurer, Don Ray; and Student Council Representative, Jean Utsinger. Bill Turner and Kay Kidwell reigned as King and Queen of the Homecoming festivities. Maureen Essex was awarded the D.A.R. Award and Jack Fayhee, the Good Citizenship Award. Our class motto was Work Works Wonders , our class flower was a white carnation with lavender edges, and our class colors were lavender and silver. As our last year drew to a close, we looked back wondering where the three years at Valley had gone. We will always remember the good times and good friends of our years at Valiev. Our appreciation goes to our sponsors, Karlene Gullberg and Ercil Little, and all those responsible for the education we received at Valley High School. 1 4 Pauline's Beauty Shop — Yates City SALLY ARMSTRONG LYLE BALL Seniors SHERRYLL BARKER JANET BECK BOBBY BURK HEAD JERRY BROWN Seniors GORDON CAMERON DONALD CECIL 1 6 Compliments of F. Folkenroth-General Insurance — Maquon Class Prophecy June, 1975-----1 hove just returned from my trip around the world. In my travels I encountered many of my old high school pals from Valley, whom I hadn't seen for quite some time. I boarded my remote controlled Cosmopolitan , designed by JACK FAVHEE. Jack is the owner of the Zippy Rocket Corporation at Cape Canaveral, Florida. I pressed the button marked Washington, D. C., and was on my way to enjoy a visit with the new President, RICHARD KEMPSTER. With him was his faithful body- guard, ROGER TINDER, and his private secretary, SHERRVLL BARKER. After securing a customs permit, I set out for Paris, France. One of the most outstanding places to see there was the photography studio of that world famous photo- grapher, BILL TURNER. On his staff were the top models of the year, MAUREEN ESSEX and DOROTHY FOLKENROTH, currently appearing on the covers of Moon Life and Planetary Post. Bill mentioned that he was attempting to employ DIANE WALKER, who recently won the title of Miss Universe. Since it had always been my desire to attend an opera in Italy, I zipped over to Rome. I got there just in time to see CARMEN before it closed. Starring in the opera was the world famous high soprano, AVIS HOWERTER. Her vibrating double high C shattered every piece of glass within the Opera House. From there I went directly to the Pluto Pizza Kitchen for a late snack. Pluto's is one of many in a chain owned by CAROL HILTON. I had the distinct pleasure of having my pizza served by the head waitress, LINDA WILLIAMS. My next stop was our newly conquered nation, Russia. Here JEAN UTSINGER was serving as Supreme General in charge of the WACS. To my surprise, I ran into SALLY ARMSTRONG, famous archeologist, who hod undertaken the exhibition of digging up one of her lost loves from the salt mines of Siberia. Exotic India was my next point of arrival. There to greet me was the Maharajah and his newly acquired wife, LUCILLE LAFARY, now a part of his harem. From the Maharajah we heard that the one and only circus owned by MR. ROBERT BURKHEAD was appearing in Japan, my next stop. As I entered the Big Top, all eyes were on that colossal trapeze team, DON CECIL and KAY KIDWELL, in the clouds as usual. Gallivant- ing through the crowd, creating chaos and riotous outbursts of laughter was that hilarious clown, JERRY BROWN. Of course, no world tour would be complete without a visit to the tropical paradise, Hawaii. As I flew over Pearl Harbor, I caught sight of that famous gambling ship, The Black Spade, owned and operated by Valley's own LYLE BALL and RICHARD VOORHEES. Appearing in the main spotlight in the casino was that dazzling figure of the music world, JOYCE HAHN. Joyce stops the show when she sings the new pop song, He Turns the Roulette Wheel While I Go Around, Blues. I decided to stay the night at one of the most fabulous hotels in the world, Ray's Palace. The sole proprietor is the owner, DONALD RAY. The interior of this hotel, with its breathtaking beauty, was designed by that controversial new figure in the field of interior decorating, LINDA SLATER. Bright and early the next morning I proceeded to South America where I stopped for tortillas at ROGER SHAWGO'S Hacienda. After lunch he took me on a guided tour of his 10,000 acre ranch, showing me the different types of beef cattle he had developed. Since Brazil was so near I decided to visit BILL HAHN'S stupendous Brazil Nut Farm. Bill has been the main supplier of Brazil nuts to the U. S. for the past five years. Desiring to know how those three great doctors of medicine, HAZEL WILLIAMSON, GEORGIA NESBIT and HAZEL MORSE were progressing on their cure for Spaceitis , I purchased a newspaper before resuming my trip. The headlines read, Two Doctors Still Working in Panama; Third One Headed For Space. I noticed a familiar name on the Society page. ROSE RUSSELL, who has had 12 kids in 10 years, was voted Mother of the Year. Rosie had recently moved to Mexico where we heard she could raise them cheaper by the dozen. Compliments of Allen Pruett, Livestock Transit — Moquon 29 Hollywood, still the movie capital of the world, was my next stop. I arrived iust in time to attend the premiere of that sensational new picture My Martian Man, ” adapted from the book written by GORDON CAMERON. Incidentally, Gordon writes with his toes because he has a peculiar habit of breaking both arms at the same time. Starring in the title role was the talented new star of stage and television, MISS JOYCE KEMPSTER. After the show I saw the producer in the lobby, WILLIAM WAGNER. I heard him make a statement to the press about Miss Kempster's performance that she would surely win the Academy Award. Yearning, for cooler weather, I headed for Alaska. My first and only stop was at Nome where I met DALE McATEE and GARRY FLEISHER, joint owners of Weasel and Mink, Inc. They received credit for helping build this former ghost town into the thriving metropolis it is today. Nome doubled in importance when MARILYN SOPER constructed her Interplanetary Communications Center here. I was so fascinated by this miraculous development that I decided to experiment. The first signal I received was from the Rockettes, namely KAREN LATIMER, BECKY DALLEFELD, KATHLEEN LAFFERTY, and JOAN VOLLMAR. It seems they are still going around and around looking for prospects, only now they have a Space Ship and a wider area to explore. After talking to them for a short time, I picked up a signal from WARREN UTSINGER, who hod just finished the census on the moon. Warren reported Too Many Up Here Already. Returning to my Cosmopolitan, I was off again. Once in the air, I flipped the switch on my 3-D color TV to watch my favorite program, the GLEN MELTON Show, formerly the Dick Clark Show. Appear ing as one of his guests was CAROL YOUNG singing her current hit Moonlight Rock. Following her was that teenage idol Dangerous Durdle, alias KEITH DURDLE, singing She's My Moon Love. Before he could finish, the female audience was swarming around him wanting a lock of hair for a souvenir. Just then a news bulletin flashed on the screen: BILL SOPER Wins 500 Mile Indianapolis Speed Race—ON FOOT. Bill must have finally patented his jet-propelled trock shoes. It seemed like no time at all before my ship landed at New Valley. I couldn't wait to visit this thriving metropolis and see the changes that had been made. One of the most outstanding additions was the new ultra-modern high school designed and constructed by Lawson's Out-of-this-World Architects, Inc., owned by MARION LAWSON. I was informed upon entering the school that the Valley basketball team had just won the State Championship game, under the superb leadership of the new coach, BOBBY COX. As I entered the Principal's office, I was surprised to see Valley's first woman principal. Prof. JUDITH MORSE. I asked Professor Morse if she had heard from JANET BECK, the only one I hadn't seen in my travels. She told me that Janet and her husband had built a hospital in Panama for the Spaceitis victims. Having finished my visit, I headed for home. At the airport I happened to bump into Paris’s fashion leader, PAT WEAVER, who had just opened a new fashion salon in New York and was now returning to Paris. With her was her head designer LORETTA SORRELLS, whose latest creation was the Neptune Nightie. My last stop was to the American Travel Agency, where RUTH ROTH was the manager. I thanked her for planning such a delightful trip. Looking back over the past, I realized each and everyone of my classmates had followed the motto: WORK WORKS WONDERS. 30 LARRY ANDERSON CARL BAKER ALICE BARKLEY MARY BIRD CAROLYN BOCK ROBERT BOGARD BILL BROADFIELD JUDY BRYAN JOYCE CHALCRAFT CAROLYN CHATTERTON RUTH COMBS DUANE DALEY Juniors EILEEN DANCY RODDY DEUSHANE DIANE DUNN RUTH FRANKLIN STANLEY GOOOING ARLENE GRABILL LARRY HAHN SAM HARSHBARGER 32 Compliments of Benson's Sales and Service; Norma's Beauty Shop — London Mills SHARRON MARTSTIRN SANDRA HOLLISTER KARL JONES LARRY KIDWELL GEORGE KREIDER JOE LAFFERTY Juniors ROGER MIXER LONNIE MORSE PATRICIA MORSE CAROL MULICA JANET MURPHY MARY JO MYERS MARY NEVILLE LINDA NOTT BILL PAULL Compliments of Lozier Fengel Oliver Sales Service — Fairview ANN PHIPPS 33 IRENE PICKREL VIRGINIA ROCK ANN RODEFFER GARY ROHRER DAVID SCHISLER DIANA SMITH PATRICIA SNYDER PAT STIARWALT EUGENE STUCKEY RONALD TAYLOR Juniors KAREN VO OR HE ES MARY WAGNER JOHN WATKINS BONNIE WELKER KAREN WILCOXEN 34 Compliments of Rapatee Coal Company-Flamingo Washed Oil Treated Coal — Rapatee Junior Class OUicers Roddy Deuthone, Bob Bogard, Mr. Sibort, Bill Aoull, Iron Pickrol, Mr . The juniors were put to work immediately in the concession stand at noon and at the home football games. Next came choosing the class rings and then anxiously waiting for them to arrive. Homecoming time saw our two juniors, Myron Moson and Joan Morey, as second attendants to the King and Queen. In the parade they rode on the junior float which followed the theme, Under the Beach Umbrella Sits our Prince and Cinderella. On November 7 the juniors presented their class play, Dear Diary , which was under the direction of Mr. Riccioni. A Western theme was carried out for the Junior-Senior Prom which was held on May I. To end the year, the juniors took a class trip. The officers for the junior class were: President, Bill Pauli; Secretary, Irene Pickrel; Treasurer, Bob Bogard; Student Council Representative, Roddy Deushane; and sponsors, Mr. Marvin Sibert and Mrs. Joy Roberts. Some of the more important ones this year were: Sophomore Dance and Initation, Bon-Fire, Home- coming Dance and Parade, Locker Clean-Up, Assemblies, Freshman Invitational Dance, Cheerleader Elections, and the Student Council President Election. In the meetings the Council was busy approving dates and activities sponsored by other organizations and discussing the problems of the students and the school. Vall-ee-hi Staii Once again it was work, combined with fun, os the annual staff started the 1958-59 Vall-ee-hi. Our first job was to sell subscriptions and ads to help finance the Vall-ee-hi. Next the single and group pictures had to be taken. Before anything more could be done, the dummy had to be planned. Later we cut, pasted, and placed our pictures and write-up on the layout sheets. After the last minute proofreading was completed, we were ready to send the Vall-ee-hi to press. Then the anxious arrival of our annual began. The 1958-59 annual staff and advisor sincerely hope that you enjoy this annual as much as we have enjoyed putting it together for you. 1958-59 OFFICERS EDITOR......................................................JUDITH MORSE BUSINESS MANAGER.............................................CAROL YOUNG ASSISTANT EDITOR..................................................SHARRON HARTSTIRN ASSISTANT BUSINESS MANAGER..........................................JOYCE CHALCRAFT PHOTOGRAPHER.........................................................ROSE RUSSELL ADVISOR...............................................................JOY ROBERTS TYPISTS......................RICHARD KEMPSTER, LINDA SLATER, AVIS HOWERTER KAREN WILCOXEN, DOROTHY FOLKENROTH, PAT WEAVER SANDY HOLLISTER, GEORGE KREIDER, DIANE DUNN ROW ONE: Sondy Hollister, Joan Vollmar, Glen Melton, Lindo Nott, Dorothy Folkenroth. Voice Staff At edition time, members of the journalism staff have much more to do than many of the students at Valley realize. To gather the information and then edit it into readible form is a lot of work. Then comes the job of preparing the rough draft and after that the stencils. These stencils are then run off on the mimeograph, and the final step in putting the paper together is our production line in which the various pages are stapled together to form the Valley VOICE. Copies of the VOICE are then distributed to the faculty members, and some are sent to the surrounding schools in an exchange program where we receive papers from some of the area schools. The morning that the paper comes out is a very busy time, but everyone on the staff enjoys seeing in print something that they wrote. 44 Compliments of Downs Gambles Store — Cuba; Harold Grubb, General Trucking — Ellisville FRONT ROW: Avis Howettet, Mrs. Kennelly, Mo« Ellen Remer. Library Staff AKU-AKU, PLEASE DON'T EAT THE DAISIES, BOB MATHIAS—all are fascinating titles of new books catalogued by our librarians this year! It is the librarian's responsibility, not only to catalogue each of these books but also to answer the many questions concerning them: Who has HOT ROD checked out? When will it be back? May I reserve it? And always, whether the pressure of book reports has just subsided or whether a long vacation has brought extra read- ing time, there are books to be replaced on the shelves. To these librarians and their assistants, who receive little recognition for the time and effort they donate, we express our thanks and appreciation. Emphasis this year has been on biographies, and we are pleased with the results. Our allotment for new books has been larger; thus we have built up our reference books in subject matter, such as music and the sciences. Compliments of Kenneth Runyon, F. S. Latin Club The first Latin Club meeting of the year was called to order on September 16 by our new president, Pat Weaver. Our initiation was held on September 23. Fourteen new mem- bers joined our club, increasing the membership to 33 students. The new members were required to do the following: Wear a white toga with a rope tied around the waist; learn the song in Latin, Where, Oh Where Has My Little Dog Gone; and the girls wear a lot of make-up and jewelry, and flowers in their hair. The homecoming float theme was Beat the Trojans, By Jupiter. On the float Jupiter hurled his thunderbolt at the op- ponent, the Avon Trojans. The Latin Club Spring Banquet was held at Vonachen’s Junction in Peoria last April 22. The members are looking forword to another banquet this spring. The officers for Latin Club for 1958-59 were: President, Pat Weaver; Vice-President, Karen Voorhees; Treasurer, Ann Phipps; Secretary, Kathleen Lafferty; Historian, Sherryll Barker; Re- porter, Becky Dallefeld; and Advisor, Mrs. Kennel ly. 46 Compliments of C. Lettermen's Club The Valley High Lettermen's Club is one of the smallest organizations at Valley. To be a member of the Lettermen's Club, one must have earned at least one letter in either football, basketball, baseball, or track. The Lettermen's Club started the year by initiating the new members in a novel way. They were made to wear suits, white shirts, ties, and shoes well- shined. The Lettermen helped the G.A.A. sponsor the Sadie Hawkins Dance. Later in the year they washed cars for their money-making project. The officers of the Lettermen's Club for the 1958-59 term were: Don Ray, President; Jerry Brown, Secretary-Treasurer; Glen Melton, Reporter; and Mr. Bennett, the ad- visor. 1958-1959 OFFICERS Reporter.........................Glen Melton President..............................Don Roy SecretaryTreasurer...............Jerry Brown Advisor..........................Mr. Bennett Compliments of Midway Garage Service Station — Midway; Crick's Grocery — Fiatt 47 ROW ONE: K. In July the freshman girls were guests at a picnic and swimming party at Canton Park for the summer meeting. Before the formal initiation, making the new girls full-fledged members, they all shared the fun of the informal initiation. For the Homecoming parade, the G.A.A. entered a Hula-Hoop float. Also in October the G. A. A. sent the cheerleaders to a cheerleading clinic, where they learned new cheering techniques and new cheers. The G.A.A. and Lettermen's Sadie Hawkins Dance was held on November 14. The G.A.A. carnival, which was held on February 14, was quite successful. The theme the girls used was Space Travel. Two playdays, one in September at Decatur and one in April at Canton, were held with Valley girls attending. Several girls also attended the Overnight Camp in May at the Spring Valley Salva- tion Army Camp. Throughout the year the girls have been earning points toward their awards by going swimming and bowling, playing basketball and volleyball, and going on the annual hike. The G.A.A. will also choose two girls to represent Valley at the G.A.A. Leadership Camp at Bloomington during June. Chorus Because of the large number of students electing chorus, we were divided into different groups including the Choralaires, Pearl Tones, Lo Tones, Harmony Belles, and the Voices of the Valley. In October we were invited to make a live radio broadcast from the Macomb University Studio. An outstanding event of the year was the Christmas Concert. In January, Marion Lawson, Roddy Deushane, Diane Walker, and Rose Russell went to Champaign-Urbana and participated in the All-State Chorus. During the year, various groups visited the churches of Spoon River Valley District, and furnished the special music for the morning worship services. The Fairview Women s Club is sending Joan Morey and Irene Pickrei to summer music camp at Western Illinois University. The Choralaires, the Pearl Tones, and a mixed ensemble will represent Volley at District Contest. All chorus members will participate in the Fulton County Chorus Festival at Lewistown in the spring. The final hi-light of the year will be the Spring Formal Concert in May. This climaxes the chorus activities. Let us say a big Thank You to Mrs. Thurman for a splendid job. The chorus officers for the year were: President, Bill Turner; Vice-President, Dorothy Folkenroth; Secretary-Treasurer, Myron Mason; Reporter, Avis Howerter. From the first day of practice until October 31, the last game, the Vikings practiced very hard and put everything they had into every game. They had their share of disappointments, but all-in-all, the season was fairly successful. The Vikings, lead by senior halfback Don Cecil, averaged 19 points per game. Everyone is hoping that the 1959 edition of the Valley football Vikings can have an even better season, and place first in the new conference.
