Class history Forty-nine eager seniors are preparing to board Rocket '58 from Valley Senior High School which will take them into the future. During the three year preparation period these students had some enthusiastic leaders who led them in many memorable experiences. The first year Wayne Anderson, president; Carolyn Peterson, secretary; Roger Reed, treasurer; and Barbara Pauli, S. C. Rep., headed the class. At the annual homecoming celebration Sally Miller and Arlen Mason represented the sbphomore class as their King and Queen candidates. During the eventful second year the class delegated Alan Harler as president; Joyce Beck, secretary; Ann Sullins, treasurer; and Dean Wilmot, S. C. Rep. The junior King and Queen candidates were Carolyn Peterson and Wayne Anderson. The juniors put their acting abilities into the class play Dotty arid Daffy. Aiming to realize these ambitions the class built a Stairway to the Stars for the prom. On May 25 the students put aside the chaos of their junior year to enjoy a trip to Chicago. As the time for the take-off neared the senior class was led forward by Dean Wilmot, president; Sally Miller, secretary; Janice Homer, treasurer; and Wayne Anderson, S. C. Rep. Barbara Pauli and Dean Wilmot were proclaimed King and Queen, ruling over the homecoming events. The Family Nobody Wanted was put on the stage at V.H.S. during this last year. The date of graduation brings the preparation period to an end and the graduates board the rocket, decorated in the class colors of ice blue and silver. A large banner which has the class motto Knowledge is Power written on it flies from the ship. The faculty sincerely hope that these adventurers have acquired that knowledge which will serve them well. As the rocket prepares to leave, Mrs. Kennelly and Mr. Keithly, the class advisors, say good-by to the graduates who are each wearing a gardenia. As they leave V.H.S. the graduates are confident of a successful journey into the future because Knowledge is Power. 14 Compliments of KEITH EDMONSON — London Mills; SPOON RIVER CAFE — Fairview WAYNE ANDERSON DAVID CHARLES BAKER Compliments of MAQUON VARIETY STORE -- Maquon Seniors LARRY NEIL BAKER KENNETH DWAYNE BALL ROBERTA KAYE BARKER JOYCE ANN BECK Compliments ot WILSON SALE CO ; STANDARD SERVICE STATION — tairview Seniors CARL BOCK LARRY ELDEN BROADFIELD EVA ELLA COMBS LETHA JANE COMBS Compliments of FORNERIS GROCERY — Ellisville Seniors JUDITH KAY DONALDSON RICHARD DUNN ALAN EUGENE HA RLE R JANICE LOUISE HOMER Compliments of COLONIAL GRILL; GRAVES GRAIN FEED — Maquon Seniors JAMES HUMPHREYS LeROY THOMAS KEENER NORMA JEAN KINZER ARLEN RUSSELL MASON Compliments of MEADE BROTHERS GROCERY — Prairie City Seniors MARVIN KEITH MATHIS SARA JANE McWILLIAMS SALLY ANN MILLER KENNETH DALE MIXER Compliments of SCRIPPS McCARTNEY; SINGER SEWING CO. — Canton Seniors ROBERT ADEN MORSE DEANNA ALDYNE PAINTER LOIS ESTHER PAVELKA BARBARA LOUISE PAULL Compliments of DR. Invitations had been sent to all former residents urging them to attend and stressing particularly this first evening when a wonderful entertainment is to be given. All the talent have graduated from Valley High School. The great hour has arrived and the new auditorium, designed and built by Roberta Barker, is filled. As we look around us, we see many celebrities, many of them our old classmates. The ladies in the front seats are dressed in the latest Paris fashions created by Kay Donaldson. the leading designer in Paris. Most of these ladies had had their hair styled by Carol Shover. who has her own chain of beauty salons now. As we sit behind these ladies, we overhear them talking of Claudette Anderson's sanitarium where fat people are made thin and scrawny people are made pleasingly plum. Deanna Painter and Letha Combs, as we knew them, came in with their families. We remember reading in the papers of their awards. Deanna was voted Mother of the Year of 1978, and Letha has been made honary member of the Mother of Triplets Association. The first number of the program is announced and Tanlce Homer steps onto the stage. She is universally known as an opera star. Janice has a good strong voice and can sing two songs at the same time without losing the tune. Next on the program we have that famous lecturer of homemaking, Eva Combs. She tells how to make front porches out of packing boxes and how to feed ten people seven days on twenty-three cents apiece. Larry Williams and Thomas Zeglen, two of the world's foremost diplomats also speak. They just returned from a world's conference for the prevention of adult delinquency. Just before intermission we have the presentation of the latest Betty Crocker award which is an ultra-modem kitchen. This award is presented to Sharon Wllcoxen, leading Home Economist. Following the Betty Crocker award, the Pulitzer Prize is awarded to Sally Miller, famed doctor of Psychology, for her two latest best selling books, So You Think You're Sick and I Guess You Were. Sally has been working with Lois Pavelka who has her own hospital in Minnesota. During intermission we see some more of our classmates and we reminisce. We find that LeRoy Keener, as head of the Air Force, is especially in charge of keeping track of Roger Reed. Roger is home on one of his rare visits from his paradise on the moon. From his excellent work in Physics, we always knew Roger would be the first man to the moon. Tane McWilliams recently quit her job as a stewardess on the Space Planes to marry the multi-billionaire owner of the Space Lanes. Betty Remer. traveling out West a few years ago broke Las Vegas, and has been traveling around the world on her yacht the “Viking. Looking around, we notice the checked coat of Larry Baker, well known private investigator. Larry just finished solving his latest thriller, The Case of the Bloody Fingerprint. As we talk of Valley Days, we hear that Sharon Shewell, Barbara Pauli and Tudy Pointer have graduated from Yale. The first three girls ever to attend the all boys' college have graduated with honors and now are successful lawyers. Arlen Mason has had a shocking experience in his field of electronics. Arlen has now invented an electric pocket size lie detector. Maxine Williamson has been a great help to the teenagers with her newspaper column Advice to the Lovelorn. When the farmers get together, talk of the market reports seems to be the main subject. Richard Williamson has been Inaugurated the President of the Farmers' Grain Association, with Carol Waldron as Business Manager of the Association. Kenneth Mixer has been rough competition for Robert Morse. It seems the stockyards and grain elevators can only take care of them one at a time. With such big farmers, guess we'll have to have more stockyards. Marnell Rock . the great architect is designing and building a schoolhouse with a first grade classroom with 21 corners. This classroom is designed especially for Carolyn Peterson who just doesn't have enough corners for each oi her twonty-one first grade pupils. Compliments of CONLON'S GARAGE — Rapatee 27 Marvin Mathis is owner of the Wake Up pill factory. He makes pills to help you wake up in the morning. Intermission in over and everyone hurries back to his seat for the rest of the program. The first performer is the famous recording star Terry Scott, who began his career as a barber, but followed in the footsteps of another barber, Perry Como. Accompanying Jerry is the orchestra leader and composer of distinction, Alan Harler. For the last five years Alan has conducted the Phildiscordant Orchestra and the Space Patrol Band. OaanWilfflQt, coach of the leading football champions in the Universe Football League, has just been called forward to accept the team's latest trophy. He is praising his star half-back, Wesley Widger. Wes owes his giant 200 pound build to a discovery made by the mad scientist Bantam Bob Vollroar. Dr. Vollmar is better known for his discovery of multi-flavored nail polish for ladies who chew their nails. In the front row taking pictures of the ceremonies is Tim Humphreys ■ the famous photo- grapher who recently won the interplanetary medal for the best photographic study of cheese- cake. Before we go home for the night, Wayne Anderson has invited all his old classmates to eat at one of his restaurants. Andy prides himself on his rise from a waiter in his brother's restaurant to the owner and manager of his own chain of restaurants known all over the world as the Eat and Run. The next day, we begin the festivities by attending an art exhibit. The main attractions are the masterpieces of Kenny Ball. Kenny also helps Walt Disney and as a hobby designs crossword puzzles, magazine covers, and necktie patterns. Also on exhibit are stuffed animals shot by the big game hunter Richard Dunn. For relaxation, Dick goes hunting with his Martian Wolfhounds on Venus tracking down the furry Venacoon. During the afternoon, we stroll over the new country club golf course and meet Tovce Beclc, instructor in plain and fancy golf. Charging $5 a lesson, she is now very well to do. Joyce also gives bridge and oil painting lessons between golfing efforts. To conclude our day, we are going to see an Academy Award Winning Show, Get A Job adapted from the best seller, The Story of My Life by Stephen Watters. It seems Stephen ran away into space soon after graduation and became a pirate. Known as Satellite Steve, he plundered for years before he was captured. After serving a prison term he was pardoned by the governor, Carl Bock. an old school chum. Steve is now employed writing adventure stories for movies. Starring in the lead of his films is the Casanova of stardom, David Baker. During the movie we spot a few more of our classmates. Down front we see Garry Scott, accompanied by Charles Swlse. Garry, famed space explorer, recently brought back some Plutonian cattle for Charles. Charles, now a dairy farmer, crossed them with some of his dairy cows, and the hybrid offspring give pure cream. Sitting in the balcony is Kerroit Vollmar. Not long ago, Kermit bought the newly discovered planetoid Sirus. The planetoid has conditions ideal for raising Kermit's hybrid hogs. As we are leaving the theater, we run into that outstanding athletic star, Karen Sullivan. Karen has Just received a trophy for being the best girl athlete of the year. We say good-bye to Karen and hurry back to our hotel for our last night in Valleyville. Entering the lobby, we learn that the owner, Larry Broadfield. has Just returned from an inspection tour of his 99 other hotels. The last person we see before we board our sky planes is Norma Kinzer. Norma is the cab driver taking us to the Spaceport. Flying home, we turn our thoughts to the future and wonder what the next ten years will bring in the lives of our friends. Perhaps at another Old Home Week we will meet with them again. 28 Compliments of GREENWALL GREY; GAMBLES — Canton SALLY ARMSTRONG LYLE BALL SHERKYLL BARKER DOROTHY BEARCE JANET BECK LARRY BEVARD JERRY BROWN BOB BURK HE AD GORDON CAMERON DONALD CECIL Juniors BOB CQX BECKY DALLE FELD KEITH DURDLE MAUREEN ESSEX JACK FAYHEE GARRY FLASHER DOROTHY FOLKENROTH GARRY GROVES JOYCE HAHN BILL HAHN 30 Compliments of WIDMER DREDGE — Maquon CAROL HILTON SHARLENE HOLMES AVIS HOWERTER JOYCE KEMPS TER RICHARD KEMPS TER KAY KIDWELL LUCILLE LAFARY MILDRED MARLETTE DALE McATEE KATHLEEN LAFFERTY Juniors GLEN MELTON KAREN LATIMER MARION LAWSON HAZEL MORSE JUDITH MORSE DARLA NESBIT GEORGIA NESBIT BEVERLY NORVILLE DONALD RAY RUTH ROTH Compliments of SWEARINGEN WHOLESALE CO. — Canton 31 ) ROSE RUSSELL ROGER SHAWGO LINDA SLATER MARILYN SOPER BILL SOPER LORETTA SORRELLS ROGER TINDER BEVERLY TRACEY JEAN UTSINGER Juniors JOAN VOLLMAR RICHARD VOORHEES BILL WAGNER DIANE WALKER WARREN UTSINGER PAT WEAVER LINDA WILLIAMS HAZEL WILLIAMSON CAROL YOUNG Compliments of FAIRVIEW FEED STORE — Fairview LARRY ANDERSON CARL BAKER JOYCE BAKER ALICE BARKLEY MARY BIRD CAROLYN BOCK BOB BOGARD BILL BRQADFIELD CAROLYN CHATTERTON RUTH COMBS Sophomores EILEEN DANCY DUANE DALEY RODDY DEUSHANE GERALD Du MARS DIANE DUNN RUTH FRANKLIN STANLEY GOODING ARLENE GRABILL CARRY HAHN Compliments of SIBERT'S DRUG SUNDRIES - London Mills SAM HARSH BARGER 33 SHARRON HARTSTIRN SANDY HOLLISTER KARL JONES LARRY KIDWELL GEORGE KREIDER JOE LAFFERTY ELLEN LEFLER MYRON MASON ARLENE McMAHON Sophomores BARBARA MELVIN JEAN MILLER ROGER MIXER JACK MOONEY JOAN MOREY LONNIE MORSE PAT MORSE CAROL MULICA JANET MURPHY MARY JO MYERS MARY NEVILLE 34 Compliments of MIDLAND ELECTRIC COAL CORP. — Farmington UNDA NOTT BILL PAULL IRENE PICKREL ANN PHIPPS VIRGINIA ROCK ANN RODEFFER GARY ROHRER DONALD SAMPSON DIANE SMITH PAT STIARWALT Sophomores EUGENE STUCKEY BONNIE STUFFLEBEAM PATTY SNYDER RONALD TAYLOR KAREN VOORHEES MARY WAGNER JOHN WATKINS BONNIE WELKER UNDA WESTGVER KAREN WILCOKEN Compliments of CHARLES N. Advising the class were Miss Gullberg and Mr. Little. The juniors were put to work immediately at the beginning of the year with the concession stand. Fall Favorites was the theme of our homecoming float that was entered in the parade. Candidates, who were first attendants to the Queen and King, were Maureen Essex and Roger Tinder. The Junior Class Play was presented November 8, 1957 at the Valley Senior High School. The three one-act plays, Mixed Dates, Star Baby-Sitter, and Dickey Bird were directed by Mrs. Pickrel. Proud faces were seen on the juniors around the latter part of November, when they received their class rings. Before Christmas, an extra activity was performed by the juniors—selling ribbon candy to increase our treasurey. The highlight of the Junior Class was May 16, 1958, when they presented the Junior-Senior Prom. The Junior Class trip concluded the busy year for the juniors. Everyone had fun and we are now ready to tackle our final year. Sixty sophomores started their first year at Valley Senior High School. At the first class meeting, George Kreider was elected as President. To aid him to lead the class are: Vice- President—Myron Mason; Secretary—Joan Morey; Treasurer—Mary Jo Myers; and S. C. Representative—Joe Lafferty. At homecoming time, the sophomores decorated a car for their candidates for king and queen, Bill Pauli and Ruth Combs to ride in during the traditional homecoming parade. In March the sophomores sponsored an all-school skating party. As the year ends all the class members are looking forward to a full year of junior activities. Vall-ee-hi Staii As in the past few years a lot of time, work, and fun by all concerned has gone into the preparation of the VALL-EE-HI. We first sold subscriptions for our annual to the faculty and students. Next we solicited the neighboring towns for advertisements to finance the 1957-58 VALL-EE-HI. Our next steps included the taking of group and single pictures, the organization of our dummy, and the cutting, placement, and pasting of pictures. We also had a great deal of copy writing and proofreading. At last we were ready to send the VALL-EE-HI to press. Now we can relax and await the arrival of our annuals. The annual staff and advisor of the VALL-EE-HI sincerely hope you enjoy this, your 1957-58 annual. Editor............. Business Manager.. Ass’t. Editor....... Ass't. Bus. Mgr... Photographer....... The job is not finished until we have an assembly line to put the paper together. The next to last item on the agenda is the distributing of the paper. Last of all, we address and send out The Voice to all the board members and surrounding schools. There is always a lot of work to putting out a paper but really--- It's a lot of fun. The initiation was held in September, and the new members were required to do a number of things among which were: Wear a white toga and sandals, carry a scroll to be signed by all the old members, act as slaves to the old members. The Latin Club Float for Homecoming was a chariot depicting Caesar's triumphant enter. This chariot was pulled by the slaves dressed in colors of the opponent's team. Dear Diary, While leafing through your pages we find many memorable events that we will never for- get. September was a busy month with our for- mal initiation and the FHA-FFA Dance. We gave a skit entitled UNWANTED at the Section 12 Fall Rally. A home economist highlighted our first meeting by giving an illustrated talk on CYREERS IN HOME ECONOMICS. Other demonstrations were parliamentary procedure by the FFA and a hair stylist. A wiener roast was held at Karen Latimer's and when we left, we were stuffed with wieners and marshmallows. The FHA float entitled BEAT'EM was a lot of work but a lot of fun. For the Christmas festivities we made Christmas corsages, and a talk was given on HOW TO WRAP AND DECORATE CHRISTMAS PACKAGES. The first grade Christmas Party was a lot of fun with the Chapter Father, Dean Weaver, acting as Santa Claus. Our Chapter Mother, Jane Weaver, entertained us with a Christmas party which we all enjoyed. Our moeny-making schemes were a chili supper and selling Valley Viking sweatshirts. All the fathers enjoyed a date with their daughters at the Daddy Date Night in February. Many beautiful fashions were displayed at the annual spring style show. National FHA week rolled around and we went to church together, gave a gift to a shut in, fixed a window display, got fined for speaking to boys, and had a Ma, Pa, and Me Night. During May was the Senior Honor Party, Mother-Daughter Banquet, and installation of new officers. We have worked and played together this year. Dear Diary, and have had quite a successful year. This year there are sixty-four girls in GAA. For the summer meeting a picnic was held at Canton Park. The ninth grade girls were the guests. In the fall we had a float in the Home- coming Parade. The new members tried very hard to carry out their informal initiation. The impressive formal ceremony was held later making them full-pledged members. The theme of Around the World was carried out very successfully. On March 14, the GAA and Letterman's Dance was held. Two play days were held during the year with Valley girls attending. Several girls attend- ed an Overnight Camp at Peoria. All during the year the girls have been earning points toward their awards by participating in basketball, volleyball, swimm- ing bowling and ice skating. Two girls were picked to represent Valley at the GAA Leader- ship Camp at Bloomington during the summer. 48 Compliments of MR. MRS. GLEN TRUAX AND FAMILY — Fiatt G. A. A. The marching band performed at all the home football games and gave a very special showing at the homecoming game on October 11. This band was invited to the Macomb Homecoming game but the Flu Bug prevented their going. A Christmas concert was given with the chorus in December. The pep band played at all but two home basketball games. On February 10, the band traveled to Canton to participate in the annual band festival. On March 29 they again traveled to Canton for the district band contest. Several solos and ensembles also went to Canton to district contest. In December they presented an operetta, The Pirates of Penzance, then on into rehearsals for a joint Christmas concert with the band. In January we began getting ready for the chorus festival at Lewistown in March, and at the same time a select group of twenty-one members was preparing for the District contest at Canton. Twenty-one students took part in a preliminary vocal contest to select our representatives to the solo contest at Canton. At this writing contest ratings have not been determined, but we're hoping for some good ones and for a fine formal concert in the spring. The money raising project of the year was selling Valley Vikings car plates. Lettermen's initiation was held. A Sadie Hawkins Dance was co-sponsored with the G. A. A. The concession stand at the home basket- ball games was sponsored by the Lettermen's Club also. 1957-58 OFFICERS President........................... Vice-President........................
