Compliments of ABINGDON QUALITY HATCHERY Abingdon. HI. CLASS HISTORV Nothing Great Was Ever Achieved Without Enthusiasm was the motto of the class of '55. We were not particularly noted for our talent or accomplishments, but like other typical teen-agers, we had plenty of enthusiasm. Our history began when as 64 humble sophomores, we entered senior high school. We were a bit confused during the first week, but soon got into the swing of things; joined organizations, and made new friends. For our class officers we selected Stanley Etter, president; Terry Douglass, secretary; David Mason, trea- surer; Marlene Wood, student council representative; and Harold Smith, parlia- mentarian. Our standing advisors were Mr. Maxey and Mr. Keach. The first party we sponsored was a skating party held in Canton. Soon it was Homecoming time, and Fayrene Woods and David Mason were the sophomore candidates for king and queen. Our junior year we discovered, was to be a busy one. First there were class rings to decide upon, and then the junior play, Skidding. Serving as class officers were Harold Smith, president; LeRoy Roberts, secretary; Helen Higgs, trea- surer; Carolyn McDonnough, student coun- cil representative; and John Craver, par- liamentarian. We elected Helen Higgs and Bill Cannon to represent us at Homecoming. We also took time out to sponsor an all school Barn Party, and then proceeded to make plans for the Prom. We used a Rainbow theme which was very effective and which featured an outdoor cafe where refreshments were served. After running the concession stand all year, we were rewarded by taking our hard-earned money to Chicago where we stayed at the Palmer House. We became a bit too familiar with the back stairways, perhaps, but everyone had a swell time. All too soon, it was our senior year, and it seemed that time had certainly flown since we had come to Valley. Our final class officers were Larry Rench, president; Ruth Anderson, secretary; Naomi Barker, treasurer; Dale Ander- son, student council representative; and Dick Hahn, parliamentarian. Every- one got spruced up on September 15, and senior pictures were taken. Home- coming was pretty important to us this year since Eleanor Ball and Dick Hahn were elected king and queen. To top it off, we defeated Southeastern 7-0 in our Homecoming game, so we were all in good spirits. When March rolled around it was time for the senior play, and Ever Since Eve went over very well. As our days at Valley grew num- bered we proceeded to plan for Senior night. Baccalaureate, and finally on May 27, our graduation. Marlene Wood was chosen for the D.A.R. award, and Stanley Etter received the boys' citizen- ship award. So at last we say good-bye” to dear old Valley, where we have all had some wonderful times, and with our motto Nothing Great Was Ever Achieved Without Enthusiasm as our guide, we push on to future goals. To finance our annual, we sold advertisement pages to the different classes and organizations in school, and subscriptions to an- nual . After our pictures were taken and returned, our work changed to cutting, Pasting, and then getting the dummy ready for the engraver’s deadline . This deadline was the first of aperies of deadlines, which we had to meet until we had sent in the last page to 'he Besides preparing the annual, the staff, with the Voice staff, sponsored a recreatio, round-up. A. A. camp. The camp, East Bay Camp was situated in a patch of woods broken only by buildings and a finger of Lake Bloomington. To determine who should go to camp, the names of all G. A. A. members who were interested in going and who the officers thought were worthy of going, were put in a hat. From these names, four names were drawn out. Two girls to go to camp, and two alternates. The G. A. A. Summer Camp is for all girls who are interested in the sport activities such as swimming, dancing, tennis, and archery. Last summer there were approximately 266 girls attending camp. The cabins were arrang- ed in a semi-circle around the counselors’ house. Upon our arrival at camp, we made our bunk beds, hung up our clothes, donned a pair of levis or shorts, and, after supper, gathered in the newest building at the camp, Denim Hall. Den- im Hall is a very large, one story building built for the purpose of indoor recreation. There we met our counselors, were introduced to the rules of the camp, and picked our teams and chose captains for the week. Each evening brought something different to do at Denim Hall, such as our scavenger hunt on Wednesday and on Satur- day evening we put on dresses and had a banquet in the dining hall. G. A. A. camp is wonderful. It was a whole week of meeting new people, helping put the newspaper together or being on the camp coun- cil by election. Homesickness was at its peak the day we went home. The week goes very fast but you will always remember the fun and sun- burn of G. A. A. camp. G.A .A. Competing for solo honors at the District contests were Sonia Kay Martin, George Vollmar, and Chuck Keefauver, who received good ratings. Barbara Benson, Ronnie Schumann, and Alice Richmond received excellent ratings. A trio composed of sopho- more girls, Alice Richmond, Donna Mooney, and Judy Johnson, and a boy’s quartette composed of Chuck Keefauver, Gene Kalley, Ronnie Schumann, and George Vollmar also received excellent ratings. Receiving superior ratings and the honor of competing in the state contest at Bloomington was soloist Florabelle Ulm and a girls trio consis- ting of Barbara Benson, Janet Latimer, and Florabelle Ulm. The chorus gave another concert with the band on March 20th when the group gave a preview of their contest numbers. On March 22, the annual Chorus Festival, in which the whole chorus participated, was held in Farmington. As spring rolled around, it was time for our yearly Spring Concert. Highlighting the program were numbers by the select chorus group under the direction of a guest director. BUS DRIVERS. COOKS. AND CUSTODIAN Darold Sampson Reynold Conlon Mel Waldron On May 14 the Juniors welcomed the Seniors and their guests to a fairy- land of a beautiful rose garden under a pastel rainbow with a pot of gold at its end. Under the balcony the serving tables were arranged in a separate rose garden giving the effect of a roadside cafe. Several of the Sophomores helped out as waiters and waitresses. The beautiful effect of the decorations made the Juniors very proud of their hours of hard work as the seniors showed their appreciation by their carefree enjoyment of the evening's entertainment. Thus the biggest event of the year was danced away into the past to the music of the Swingmasters. MARLENE WOOD STANLEY ETTER Marlene Wood and Stanley Etter were chosen this year by the Senior class and the faculty at Valley High School to receive the DAR Good Citi- zenship Award. During Marlene's years in Valley, she has beer Vice-President and President of the F.H.A., Sec- retary of the Student Council, and Band Librarian. She has also been a member of F. H.A. Student Council, G. A.A., Chorus, and Ensembles. She was in the cast of the Junior class play, and Student Director of the Senior Class play and was awarded an Activity Award. Stanley was Sophomore Class President, Assis- tant Editor of the Annual during his Junior year and Editor during his Senior year. In addition to being a member of Chorus and Lettermen’s Club he was in the Junior and Senior class plays and has partici- pated in Basketball and Baseball each year. Both Marlene and Stanley have shown outstand- ing characteristics of Dependability, Service, Leader ship, and Patriotism throughout their school years, and these qualities are what are considered in the selection of those to receive the DAR award. Two other girls and two other boys were chosen by the Senior class to be considered by the Faculty in the final selection. We feel that for this honor they deserve honorable mention.
