Jose Napoleon Duarte, was elected president in what international observers called the most open and free election in that country in 50 years. 212 Activities Democratic presidential candidate Walter Mondale made history when he chose a women, Geraldine Fer- raro, as his vice presidential running mate. Mondale and Ferraro were nominated on the Democratic ticket at the party convention in San Francisco in July.
