Boys' and Girls' State ln the simplest terms, a leader is one who knows where he wants to go, and gets up and goes. - john Erskine - Boys' and Girls' State is an important and prestigious program which incorporates government and leadership in a week long seminar held in the mountain surroundings of Carson City and Fallon. It is sponsored by the American Legion. Students from various high schools are selected by their counselors based on Individual qualities. Once they are chosen, they prepare to attend the session which takes place during the summer. Cities and counties are simulated to make up the functions of an entire state. At the seminar, students are elected into offices: mayors, senators, governors, and all other positions that exist in real government. They then discuss issues and answers which lead to the formulation of mock laws. This week of government training helps the students in taking an active and important role in their future positions as leaders in society. ,Jqw mal

120 Honors ational Merit Finalists A genius is someone who aims for what no one else can see, and hits it. Anonymous National Merit is a non-profit organization devoted solely to scholar- ship activities. Students from any of the high schools in the 50 states par- ticipating are allowed to enter. Only 5,300 Merit Scholarships are awarded. To become a semifinalist, the student must enter the merit program by taking the PSAT and NMSQT ln their junior year. This test serves as a screening device to narrow the number of students in competition for awards. These semifinalists then have an op- portunity to go on to the scholarship competition. The semifinalists are a group that are representative of the outstanding students nationwide. They are the highest scorers within each of the 50 states. This year Valley High School was honored to have more students placed in the semifinals than any other Southern Nevada high school. You know y0u're a lunior when . . . General Hospital is more important than general science. . . .getting a date is more important than getting a job. you're too young to write your own absence notes and too old to have your parents write them. . . . you finally get to see an assembly from the front. This year the junior Class has been really spirited and progressive. We've spon- sored many events throughout the year and tried to apply more student involvement. The main goal was to get luniors interested and excited about Valley so we can be the most 'outstanding' Senior Class in Valley's history next year. Tyrone Thompson
