Foreign Exhange Students ote Tania Hetzer is a foreign ex- change student from Switzerland, and she lives with the Cotton fami- ly. She said of Michelle Cotton, We have become like real sisters and best friends. I was lucky to get to live with such a nice family. When comparing Valley to school in Switzerland, Tania stated, Our schedule was different every day. Sometimes we only had school in the morningg sometimes all day. Katarina Kinnunen, better known as Katti, is a bright young ex- change student from Finland. Katti is most interested in figure skating, and she skates every morning before school with her two American sisters Michelle and Deb- bie Reed. She feels school is more fun here than in Finland because of all the extra-curricular activities. Tomoko Sasahara comes to Valley from one of the most technologically advanced countries in the world. She says, American schools are really easy compared to my girls' high school in japan. The major difference Tomoko has found in America is the family life: ln my country, the mother is the strongest figure in the home. The mothers are very cold to children. But here, the American father is stronger, and the mothers are too sweet with their children. Gaelle Sence-Corvillian is from Paris, and she will return to France for her last year of high school after graduating from Valley. She says about school in Vegas, To tell the truth I really prefer my school in France, it is a small private school, and we absolutely know each other and have very close relation- ships with our instructors. Knowledge Quick Recall Do you know who the 16th vice president was? How about Nebraska's state motto? If not, ask a Varsity Quiz member. The 1983-84 Varsity Quiz Team was undefeated for the second year in a row. The VQ team since 1982 has won 14 games straight, and they really deserve that record. The team drills Monday through Friday from 1:30-3. They must know things from Roman mythology to state capitals. Top team members Melinda Gushwa scored 255 points, Team Captain Naomi Super, scored 235 points, and Mike Sewell scored 185 points. Varsity Quiz may sound like a lot of hard work, but there are some fun times. Once while a game was going on, Melinda Gushwa spilled water all over the table. Naomi Super thought a baseball weighed three pounds. To get ready for a match, the team drills intense- ly during a mock game. Before the game, no member talks about Varsity Quiz, they discuss anything but the game. This keeps the team's ner- vousness to a minimum. Team Coach ludith Granese said, I always tell my team that to win, they have to want the win and to 'ask' to play to the best of their abilities. If they ask to win, they are asking that the other team lose, - that's selfish. To be the best, they should play the best. The team quote was I want -an f Sp 'K W' JPL W '

Life Style, Education Differences Hector Amayizca Timy Lassooy Hector Amayizca feels that high school in his native Mexico are not as well organized as they are here. He does claim that his schools are harder. After he graduates from Valley, Hector plans to return to Mexico to study veterinary medicine. He is still uncertain whether he will choose that field for his career. Valley Welcomes Ann Olsen comes to Valley from Norway, and she stays with the Mattson family. When Ann finishes her education, she hopes to work at the Norwegian Embassy. Some of the favorite things Ann enjoys while living in Las Vegas are the 24-hour shops, the weather, and the family she lives with. Ann states, I would absolutely recommend American youths to become exchange students. It is a great experience, and you learn a lot. Timy Lassooy is from Finland, and he is staying with the Singer family. His favorite sport is tennis. He en- joys playing at the Singer's court, and he has been seeded H1 on the team at school. Timy feels that there is a big dif- ference between schools in Finland and those in the U.S. Schools in Finland demand more academic ef- fort, Timy enjoys the extra- curricular activites here that are not available in Finland. Not Pictured - Thortsen Trenkner from Germany Thorsten Trenker came to the United States to find out more about the Land of Opportunity, and the traditions of its people. He has stayed in both Seattle, Washington, and Las Vegas. Thorsten stated, People in the U.S. are very nice, everywhere I went, I was welcomed with open arms. I have had very exciting experiences touring Montana, coming to Las Vegas, and sharing Christmas in the American styIe. He continued, I will be staying here in Vegas with my aunt until graduation. I am look- ing forward to this experience because we have no such ceremony in Germany. I am sure this will be one of the most memorable events of my life.
