Valhalla, in Norse mythology, was a hall ofslain heroes, who lived bliss- fully under the leadership of the god Odin. This Hall of the Slain is depicted as a splendid palace roofed with great battle shields. Huge spears held up its ceiling. The gleam from these highly polished weapons was so bright it gave all the light which the hall needed. Coats of mail and other armor hung on the walls. It is a commonly held belief that the Vikings regularly placed their dead heroes on great ships which were then set on fire and sent to sea. Contrary to this opinion, is the fact that, cremated or not, the mortal remains were buried in a mound be- cause of the widespread belief in a mound as an energy center. The height of the mound varied, rising with the rank and wealth of its tenant. Some were as much as four stories tall, and inside these mounds were built the burial chambers.
