Charles lluss. |)rinci[)al. kll Saiila Ana Valley Senior High School in March. When Valley first opened in 1959, Dr. Hess was one of the original teachers at Valley. In 1963 he became head of the math depart- ment. He also served as head basketball coach; and, when Ed Caruthers played. Dr. Hess took his team to GIF finals. In 1966 Dr. Hess became assistant principal of instruction. In 1968 he became Valley ' s principal. In college Dr. Hess obtained two bachelor degrees in math and science. In 1961 he earned his Master ' s Degree in Educational Administration and achieved a Doctorate Degree in School Finance in 1969. The school has much to thank Dr. Hess for, but we students have more. He was a man dedicated to the student body. This view is evident in this statement from Dr. Hess. I have had the privilege and pleasure of l)cing a pari ol the growlli ol alk Higli School. I have seen many fine accomplish- ments by the students and faculty. Many , problems have been met and solved. I will always remember the many fine athletic teams and the athletes on tliese teams; but, foremost in my mind, will be two outstanding projects which were con- ceived and completed by the students and staff. These were the drives for new band uniforms and the purchase of the van for Victor Rivera. These two projects epitomize the best in cooperative effort and our con- cern for our fellow man. We thank you, Dr. Hess, for your great contributions to Valley High School. We know that you will be successful in anything you attempt to do. To Dr. Charles Hess, we the TALON staff, dedicate the 1970 TALON. Administration Added New Members The Class of 70 was fortunate to have had two principals. Girls ' and Boys ' State are leadership camps that are run like a government. Girls ' State was held at the Univer- sity of California at Davis. There, Debbie was elected to the position of State Supreme Court Justice. Ron attended Boys ' State at Sacramento fairgrounds where he was able to sit in on a State Legislative Session. Both thought the programs were worthwhile experiences. Active Seniors Held More Honors Debbie discusses school life with friends. ACADEMICS 34 Debbie Bleskey was chosen as D.A.R. Good Citizen for 1970. She received this honor because of her active life in school and in her community. Through her years at Valley, Debbie served as vice-president of the junior class, first semester senior class president, was Valley ' s representa- tive to Girls ' State, and, perhaps most important, lined up a host of friends. Debbie Bleskey contributes to senior cause. Semester President Debbie Bleskey Vice President Ron Pena Secretary Ursula Lenhard Student Relations Victor Rivera This may be the Age of Aquarius, but the past three years have marked the era of the Seniors of Seventy. Fine leadership, class participation, and hard work have brought us to where we are — the top. Setting our goals high and achieving them are also some of our greatest characteristics. We began as most sophomores do, quite unaware of the many activities on the Valley campus, but we quickly familiarized ourselves with them. After our first hair-raising experience at our first pep assem- bly. Valley ' s spirit became a part of us. Dan White, sophomore class president, represented us to- gether with Mike Smith, vice-president, Denise Esparza, secretary-treasurer, Denise Dossey, girls ' student relations, and Stan Morris, boys ' stu- dent relations. Mrs. Margaret Minton was our class adviser. Our junior year proved to be very successful. Under the leadership of Diane Dunbar, junior class president, fund raising was at a peak; and many activities were in full swing. The other officers in- cluded Debbie Bleskey, vice-president, Jerilyn King, secretary -treasurer, and Connie Hofmann and Bill Tell, student relations girl and boy. The traditional victory suckers were sold during both the football and basketball seasons . Colorful, spiral scratch pads, a Valley first , were sold during the Christ- mas season and the profits helped finance the Christmas formal and the prom. We also sponsored the Homecoming Dance. Spirit kept unity among the members of our class, and we won the spirit stick at pep assemblies several times. Besides beiug successful in financing our class activities, the Victor Rivera Fund, sponsored by our class, proved to be a rewarding experience for everyone at Valley. Victor, a junior, had been involved in an accident which had left him completely paralyzed. Because he wanted to attend Valley, he needed transportation to get himself and his electric wheelchair, the Taco Turbine as he called it, to school. Sing-Out Orange County presented two shows- which made the campaign for a van for Vic very suc- cessful. The van was later presented to Victor and his mother on the Valley campus by our outstanding adviser, Mr. Fred Malais. Debbie Bleskey represented the senior class with Vice-President Ron Pena, Secretary -Treasurer Ursula Lenhard, Girls ' Student Relations, Rhonda Jackson, and Boys ' Student Relations, Victor Rivera, during the first semester. Another scratch pad sale was held during the Christmas season. The Seventy Spirit was again high and hard to beat, especially at pep assemblies. A Christmas toy drive was organized by Larry Clark, Cheryl Gordon, Alice Mason, and Marlene Lamb. A special talent show was arranged. The proceeds were turned over to the Santa Ana St. Student Relations Rhonda Jackson Semester Student Relations Mary Bender Vice-President Scott Benson President Debbie Bleskey Student Relations Craig Johnson Secretary Stella Gutierrez Vincent de Paul Society and the Orange County Chapter of the National Association for the Advance- ment of Colored People. Debbie again served as president second semester with Vice-President, Scott Benson, Sec- retary-Treasurer, Stella Gutierrez, Girls ' Student Relations, Mary Bender and Boys ' Student Relations, Craig Johnson. Mr, Malais once again served as a most valuable adviser during our Senior year. During Spirit Week the senior class sponsored Sock-It-To-A-Teacher again. Seniors also won the money jug contest by collecting the most money in their Sparklets water jug in competition with the other classes. Second semester brought the time of preparation for graduation. Announcements were ordered and measurements for caps and gowns were taken. College entrance examinations and applications were completed, and plans for senior week were underway with committees for the senior assembly and the senior luncheon in action. An alumni committee in charge of a senior directory was also organized. A special spring hayride was confirmed as another senior activity. The Class of Seventy has played a great role at Valley. It has contributed in both the academic and athletic areas. It will leave its memory at Valley for years to come as it enters a bright new future after graduation. Time it was. And what a time it was. It was A time of innocence, A time of confidence. Long ago .... it must be . . I have a Photograph. Preserve your memories, They ' re all that ' s left of you. Bookends Theme. American life is a little different from Swedish, but not as much as one would think. The whole school system is different, but the students are almost the same. I ' ve had a great time, and my family has done so much for me. I ' ve seen both the good and the bad in American life which makes the whole picture more complete. The greatest adventure will probably be my graduation and the final bus trip in July through the U.S. with other AFS students in Southern California. I ' ve gained a lot more knowledge in English, of course; but, more important, I ' ve learned that teenagers are almost the same everywhere. Competition in New League After completion of pre -league play against Foothill and El Modena, the Falcons began their first season as a member of the Irvine League. They were welcomed 40-8 by defending Irvine League and GIF AAA Cham- pion, Loara. In this game, however, Valley became the first team to score against Loara all year. The next game proved disastrous as the football team absorbed a demoralizing 33-0 defeat at the hands of the new and untried Edison Chargers. Hopes for a homecoming victory a week later against Estancia quickly vanished as the Eagles built up a big lead and held off the Falcons, 38-12. Valley ' s scores came on a fumble return by Dale Garcia and a pass interception by Dave Rohrig. In competition between high schools within the city, the Falcons took top honors by way of a 52-47 win over the Roadrunners and a 55-53 upset win over the highly -regarded Saints. The twin vic- tories were especially impressive consid- ering the fact that neither game was played in the Falcon gym. Valley finished intra- city play with a 2-0 record. Santa Ana and Mater Dei tied at 2-1, and Saddleback trailed at 0-3. After posting a 5-5 pre-league record, the varsity cagers went into a six-game tailspin at the beginning of league play. However, the Falcons then rebounded to upset Costa Mesa 69-62 at home and stun Loara 56-50 on the Saxon ' s own court. Both Costa Mesa and Loara had been tied for first place with eventual league champion Corona del Mar before their losses to the Falcons. These victories began a streak during which the Falcons won six out of eight games. The varsity finished fourth in the Irvine League with a 6-8 record, and had an 11-13 record over-all. The players were in there to learn something about water polo, and unfor- tunately mistakes accompany learning. Katella Orange Signatures CLOSING 216 Signatures CLOSING 217 Signatures CLOSING 218 The TALON for the year 1970 is com- pleted. By no means was the completion of this book merely a twitch of the nose. Many, many hours of hard work have gone into making this annual what we think is the best yearbook Santa Ana Valley has ever produced. I would like to express my thanks to the many people on the TALON staff who have been the heartbeat of our yearbook. Thanks go to Marilyn Eddie. Without her help as assistant editor, we would have had many difficulties. Mary Bender and Jayne Shutt labored long over the activities section. Mary also designed the cover and division pages and did much of the art work in the TALON. Stuart Maurer was always hard at work on the sports section. Karen Hernandez used many original ideas in the senior section. The underclass editors were: Sherry Weir, co-ordinating editor, Sandi Ferguson, juniors, Mike Cook, sophomores, and Mary Spoonhower, freshmen. The club section was compiled by Marion Chairez and the academics by Marlene Lamb. Joan Boone was responsible for the GAA section, Joan also kept our records and photographs in order. Jill Werts was copy editor, assisted by Karen Hill and Tony Scott. Dana Wells compiled the faculty and administration section of our annual. Also, my appreciation goes to Debbie Watts and Jeanne Rogers for their over all help in all sections. Janvie Cason handled all of our money matters this year and was responsible for the advertisements. My deepest gratitude, however, goes to our photographer Alex Duron, without whom we would have had many difficulties. Alex was assisted by Gary Ambrose and Jerry Hobel. Our adviser was Mrs. Elaine Stuckey. She was always there when we were in a panic to calm us down and help us. I give to you, the associated student body, the 1970 TALON. It holds a year of wonderful memories at Santa Ana Valley Senior High School. May God bless you all. Editor-in-chief Remember These Common Scenes?
