Keep Valley Ahead Mr. Bert Everett has been with Valley for nine years and, be- sides his counseling duties (juniors A-Q), he sponsors the National Honor Society. Born in Farmington, Mr. Ev- erett holds a Master of Arts from New Mexico Highlands University. Mr. Everett claims gardening is his favorite hobby. Mr. Keith Weathersby, sophomore counselor (R-Z), has been with Valley for three years. Born in Texas, Mr. Weathersby received his Bachelor of Science at North Texas State Col- lege and Master of Arts at Ohio State University. Raising tropical fish, fishing, and all sports are Mr. Weathersby ' s hobbies. In addition to being a sophomore coun- selor, he sees any student who needs vocational counseling. Mr. Lester E. Dohner has been with Valley for the past ten years as Direc- tor of Attendance. Mr. Dohner, born in Kansas but raised in Colorado, received his Bachelor of Science at Colorado State University and Master of Arts at the University of New Mexico. Mrs. Lovola Burgess, head counselor, has been with Val- ley since its opening and spon- sors the National Honor Soci- ety. Mrs. Burgess is from Clarksville, Iowa, and received her Master of Arts from the University of New Mexico. Among her many interests are hiking, camping, reading, and raising house plants. Mr. Gerald W. Hamrin, junior counselor, has been with Val- ley for two years. Born in Min- neapolis, Minnesota, Mr. Ham- rin received his Bachelor of Science in Education here at the University of New Mex- ico. His hobbies include play- ing the piano, swimming, good music, and motion picture pro- jecting. Mrs. Marie Hays has been with Valley for the past ten years as Direc- tor . of Student Affairs. Mrs. Hays, born in Es- tancia, New Mexico, ob- tained her Bachelor of Science here at the U. N. M. She sponsors Stu- dent Council. VIPS, Var- sity and B-Team Cheer- leaders. Her hobbies in- clude all kinds of sports and all shapes, sizes, and kinds of young people. Mrs. Viola Bell has been with Valley for the last nine years as our attend- ance clerk. Mrs. Bell serves as a very courte- ous receptionist for ab- sentee phone calls. She is also in charge of the large number of office- aids who assist her each period with class tardies and absences.

— 1 Important People Mrs. Marian Ferguson, Valley ' s assistant principal, has been with Valley for the last ten years. Born in Albuquerque, she received her B. A. and M. A. at the University of New Mexico. In her leisure time, she enjoys playing bridge, watching sports, traveling, and just plain work. Dr. Charles R. Spain, superintendent of schools, attended Bethal College, McKenzie, Tenn., A. B.; Peabody College, Nashville, Tenn., M. A.; Teachers College, Columbia University, Ed. D. He has been teacher, principal, supervisor, re- search associate, consultant, visiting professor of education, and Department head. He has pro- vided new schools, and new programs for the Albuquerque area. The Board of Education determines the school policy for the Albuquerque School system. Pictured here at a formal gathering are; Mr. Floyd F. Darrow, a special agent with the Paul Revere Life Insurance Co., Mr. Robert M. Elder, senior vice-president of the Albuquerque National Bank, who has been with the board since 1944; Mrs. Jeanette Stromberg, Board Clerk and housewife, completing her third year as a board member. Mr. S. Y. Jackson, Board President, who has been with the Board for 23 years in addition to being manager of the Excelsior Laundry. Mr. Leon T. Thompson, vice-president of Savage and Sagan- zini, who has been with the board for nine years and serves as chairman of the finance board.

Miss Tommie J. Allen, a Bi- ology and P. E. teacher, is at Valley for the first time this year. She was born in Ben- nington, Oklahoma and re- ceived her Bachelor of Science from Southeastern State Col- lege at Durant, Oklahoma. She enjoys riding and reading in her spare time. Mr. Thomas A. Arciniega, now completing his second year at Valley, teaches So- cial Studies. Born in El Pa- so, Texas, he received his Bachelor of Science from New Mexico State. His hob- bies are sports and books. Mr. Arciniega sponsors the Varsity Baseball and B-team football. Mr. Henry A. Bauer is completing his sixth year at Valley as co-ordinator for Distributive Education. Mr. Bauer was born and raised in Greeley, Colorado and received his Bachelor of Arts and his Master of Arts at Colorado State College. Mr. Bauer ' s hobbies are fishing and water sports. He sponsors the Valley Chapter of the Distributive Education Clubs of Amer- ica and the Key Club. Mr. Richard A. Beattie is one of the new members to join the faculty at Valley. Mr. Beattie, a teacher of World History, was born in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. He received his Bachelor of Arts in Education at East Central State College in Ada, Okla- homa. His hobbies are listening to good music and working with young people. 15 New Teachers Join V H S Frank W. Ackerman has been with Valley for the last five years teaching Algebra I, and Algebra II. Mr. Ack- erman was born in Cleveland, Ohio; but was raised in Ludlow, Massachusetts, received his Bachelor of Science in Education and Master of Arts in School Administra- tion from the University of New Mexico. Among his hobbies, he includes building adobes with use of south- west materials. Mrs. Julia G. Andrade is completing her ninth year at Valley as one of the Spanish teachers. In addition to teach- ing Spanish, Mrs. Andrade sponsors the Tennis Club and the Spanish Club. Born and raised in Albuquerque, she received her Bachelor of Arts at the University of New Mexico. She is interested in traveling. Miss Clara M. Arretche, teacher of Spanish III and IV and sponsor of the Na- tional Honor Society, was born in Las Vegas, New Mexico. Her hobbies are reading and dancing, and she has been with Valley for nine years. She holds a Bachelor of Arts and a Mas- ter of Arts from the Uni- versity of New Mexico. Mr. Roger C. Babcock, teacher of U. S. History and government, was born in Hastings Nebraska. Mr. Babcock attended Hastings College and received a Bachelor of Arts; he also attended the University of Nebraska to receive a Mas- ter of Arts. Mr. Babcock has been with Valley for six years and sponsors the National Honor Society and the Speech Club.
