Saul, Barrett Fuel Patriots To Easy Win 0verbBr0nte By MICHAEL P. MANN Avalanche-Journal Sports Staff POST - The Bronte Longhorns had seen the run-and-shoot offense and several other aerial attacks while building their impressive 10- 0 record and eaming a berth in the Class 1A state playoffs. It was quickly evident, howev- er, that the eighth-ranked Long- homs hadn't seen anything like Valley's record'-breaking aerial tandem of Kirk Saul and Matt Bar- rett. Saul and Barrett teamed up to give the ninth-ranked Patriots a 21- 0 lead in the opening 10 minutes as Valley cmised to a 34-6 victory in a 1A bi-district encoxmter at Ante- lope Stadium Friday night. The 12-0 Pats meet Baird, a 20-0 winner over Santo Friday, in area play next week. The site and timer. for that game will be determined today. Bronte failed to register a Hrst down on its opening possession of the game, which was the Long- horns' first and fatal mistake. Vai- ley set up shop on its 32 yard line after Stephen Lee's punt. Aided by a personal foul penal- ty, the Pats breezed dovm the tield in six plays. Saul completed four passes in a row, all to Barrett, in- cluding the 7-yard TD throw with 7:53 remaining in the first quarter. The touchdown pass was Saul's 51st this season, giving him the na- tional record. Sol Graves of Mon- roe, La., Quachita Christian threw for 50 TDs last season. Bronte's Pete Puentez ran Ruiz down at the 2 yard line, setting up Saul's touchdown pass to Barrett on the next play. Scott Sau1's PAT made it 14-0 with 5:43 to go in the first quarter. A 47-yard run by Thomas Rodri- guez led to Kirk Saul's 3-yard TD pass to Brandon Smith with 2: 11 to go in the first quarter, making it 21-0. The Longhorns fared much bet- ter in the second quarter. David Setliff The work of a community and school is a never-ending task, and without those who are willing to accept the responsibilities of getting the job done, progress would never be ac- complished. Such a person as this was David Setliff, who accepted responsibility willingly whether it meant following or leading. David was an active member of his community and an avid supporter of its school and its activities. At the time of his death, David was serving as a member of the Valley School Board and had served in the past as a president of the Booster Club. He could always be counted on for his attendance and support at school activities. Without men such as this who are willing to work and set an example for young people to follow, our school and community would have little chance of survival. With this in mind, the Annual Staff respectfully dedicates this issue of the 1987 Patriot to the memory of David Setliff. Thank yous and goodbyes are always hard to say, but we would like to take this means of doing both. It has been 2 fun year and a busy year. We hope as you have looked at this yearbook, you have remembered all the exciting things which happened at Valley. Special thanks go to our school board and our advertisers without whose support, there would have been no year book. Also special thanks go to Deloy Myers, Wilburn Leeper, and Keith Green for all the pictures they made for us. A The Yearbook Staff l l l l l ww A Q3 UDL wi Q5 JWEQQM cf! mm W iw SQL?
