The English Department strives to instill in its students an appreciation of literature and an awareness of the essentials of creative expression. Sophomores analyze the traditional and the modern classics, Julius Caesar and The King and I. American literature introduces juniors to selections by writing personalities such as Steinbeck, Poe and Emerson. Seniors concentrate on creative and exposi- tory expression through writing compositions and reading masterpieces of English literature such as Canterbury Tales and Macbeth. Dramatics and journalism enable students to contribute to school productions. This year The Sound of Music by Rodgers and Hammerstein and The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde were presented. Students interested in journalism publish the school newspaper, the Battlec-r'y,' the literary magazine, the Anvil, and the yearbook, the Archive.
