Although only in its fifth year, the Patriot basketball team reigned with Shaker Heights as co-champion in the L.E.L. A loss to Shaker in the first contest of the season did not discourage the cagers, but rather served as an incentive for victory. Following the Shaker defeat, the Patriots entered an eight-game winning streak, in which sophomore Rich Yurcheshen joined his brother, Will, to form an unbeatable combination. Directed by Mr. Broski, and Mr. Courey, the team triumphed over Shaw, Cleveland Heights and Parma. Another dismaying defeat to Shaker Heights narrowed the Patriot's title chances, however, the team secured the co- championship when Shaker lost to Shaw. Inspired by L.E.L. all-stars, Jim Wolf and Roger Speck, the Patriots added sectional vic- tories over Padua and Benedictine to their 16-2 rec- ord, but were vanquished by those Devils from Brunswick. As Steve Ziats hustles to his position, Roger Speck sets up an offensive play.
