Harriers Excel In Relays Superior relay performances characterized the 1965 Cross Country team. Patriot harriers would have taken first place in the Cleveland Heights Invi- tational, if an unfortunate mishap had not occured. Although Mike Groenke, George Baronak, and Jon Fisher won the first three positions for a Valley Forge sweep, Mike Groenke was disqualified from the race because he skipped a marker. The junior varsity placed fourth at Cleveland Heights and second in the St. Joseph relays. In the regular meets the harriers did not fair so Well. George Baronak and Mike Groenke attempted to pull the team along with outstanding perform- ances, however, the only Patriot victories were against Shaw and Cleveland Heights. In the words of Coach Mindek, the team just did not have the depth necessary for a winning season. Sophomores Fred Hague lengthens his stride while passing a tiring Parma opponent. During the pre-game warmup, Jim Wolf shows his stuffing technique. 122 Cagers Bounce To L.E.L. Although only in its fifth year, the Patriot basketball team reigned with Shaker Heights as co-champion in the L.E.L. A loss to Shaker in the first contest of the season did not discourage the cagers, but rather served as an incentive for victory. Following the Shaker defeat, the Patriots entered an eight-game winning streak, in which sophomore Rich Yurcheshen joined his brother, Will, to form an unbeatable combination. Directed by Mr. Broski, and Mr. Courey, the team triumphed over Shaw, Cleveland Heights and Parma. Another dismaying defeat to Shaker Heights narrowed the Patriot's title chances, however, the team secured the co- championship when Shaker lost to Shaw. Inspired by L.E.L. all-stars, Jim Wolf and Roger Speck, the Patriots added sectional vic- tories over Padua and Benedictine to their 16-2 rec- ord, but were vanquished by those Devils from Brunswick. As Steve Ziats hustles to his position, Roger Speck sets up an offensive play.
