OUR SPACE-AGE SCHOOL HAS SPACE-AGE Mr. Michael Barrick Mr. Paul Kirby Mr. Robert Parilla Mr. James Pike Sue Meeth puzzles over the complexities of physics. The science department, headed by Mr. William Schreiner, offered four advanced courses to qualified science students this year. In addition to the already familiar CBA chemistry and PSSC physics, CHEM- study, a new concept in teaching chemistry with the emphasis on laboratory work, was offered for the first time this year. Science topics, the most advanced science course at Valley Forge, was offered to seniors who excelled in other science courses. Students who studied science this year were offered outstanding and excellent lab facilities which included one of the few high school planetariums in the state. PICTURE OF THE PAST A D THE PRESENT Miss Sandra Kovach Mr. Vern Kraushaar To aid the student to take his place in society, the social studies department, headed by Mr. David Grodhaus, had the responsibility of introducing the student to all phases of human behavior and all forms of social organization. Honors classes were available in world history, while both honors and basic courses were offered in U. S. history and government. Courses in sociology, the study of motives behindsocial and family problems, economics, the study of man's financial position in society, and current problems, the issues of man today, offered the pupils a challenge to investigate the back- ground and life of human beings. ln order to provide a more suitable academic program, all social science courses are in the process of being reorganized and new subjects, including a program of advanced placement in U. MATHEMATICAL AND SCIE TIFIC PROGRAMS Miss Doris Allen Mr. Louis Buchanan Mr. Kenneth Buser Mr. Loren Castor As a part of a space-age school, the mathematics department, headed by Mr. Loren Castor, offered courses which pre- pared students for the technological voca- tions of the space age. Some of these courses were four courses in algebra that developed the modern study of quantities, three courses in geometry that studied the problems re- lated with angles, surfaces, and solids, as well as a course in trigonometry which treat- ed the relationship between angles and sides of triangles. The most progressive course offered was advanced topics, which was a preparatory course for calculus.
