While these students were learning the fundamentals, the advanced classes participated in outside activities to broaden their knowledge of a particular language. The members of the third year Russian class attended a showing of War and Peace, and fourth year French students visited a restau- rant specializing in French food. Valley Forge's home economics department, under the direction of Mrs. Gladys Taliak, had a variety of courses for students interested in the art of home- making. ln clothing classes the girls developed their sewing skills and became familiar with the funda- mentals of dress design, color, and texture. Their year was highlighted by a fashion show they presented for their parents at the end of the course. Foods classes gave students practical experience in meal planning and food preparation, while the home- making class provided instruction in home manage- ment and interior decoration. For seniors who were following the academic course of study, but who were interested in homemaking, a senior home economics course was offered. This class covered foods, cloth- ing, and general homemaking. These courses all provided excellent training for future homemakers. Girls learn to sew by patient practice. 1 6

ENGLISH STUDIES SERVE AS A PREPARATORY .M Miss Lmda Callan Miss Judith Crockett Mr. Richard Curren Mr, Thomas Dunford Chairman Mrs Edith Foland Miss Barbara Grieder Mrs. Margaret Hall Miss Donna Hitt Miss Valerie Konzen Throughout his three years at Valley Forge, the VF student studied English. As a sophomore member of a basic, regular, or honors English class, he concen- trated mainly upon learning to express himself more clearly and correctly in both speaking and writing. The tenth grade courses also provided a firm literary foun- dation through a consideration of the literature of the world. The junioryear found grammar being progressively de-emphasized as the student explored the feelings of his own countrymen more deeply through the prose, poetry, and plays of past and present Americans. As a senior, the VF student discovered that he could choose college prepara- tory English or English IV. During this year, he employed all the skills of reading, writing, and interpretation that he had been taught, as he read and considered the aspects of English literature. The English department, under the leadership of Mr. Thomas Dunford, also included journalism, dramatics, speech, and debate classes. Departmental activities included the production of the school newspaper, the Battlecryg the literary magazine, the Anvil, and the yearbook, the Archive.
