Twenty- four hours a day the guns are manned to guard the carrier and its precious cargo against any surprise attack. With daily G.Q., and target practice when they may, CDR COMPTON and his men feel sure that, if the enemy should make an attack, the 40's will get them if they should elude the mighty five inch battery.

As evening falls, and the rest of the ship begins to relax from a long days work, the men in the armory are on the go, getting the bombs ready for the next day's strikes. They get little recogni- tion, but their job is essential. The men who take the jibs of the rest of the dept. are the Hre- controlmen, constantly on the go trying to keep the gun directors in the best operating condition.
